How many women would choose the men’s facilities or the mixed facilities if there was a choice ?

Given there seems to be some support for the notion that we can disregard safety issues , i would be interested to know how many of us would choose the option of men’s or mixed sex facilities if there are single sex available, and if so why?
YANBU = this is a really good idea,
YABU = I won’t support such a potentially dangerous idea

I would always choose women only.
Wish I could do the same on hospital wards.

sailmeaway · 06/07/2021 11:45

I'm fine with mixed changing rooms if there are cubicles - like at the local leisure centre which has a changing 'village' for the pools. I prefer it actually, as it means my 11 YO boy can change with me and his sister.
I wouldn't like a communal 'open' changing area even if it was just women anyway, I prefer my privacy.

midgemagneto · 06/07/2021 11:46

If single sex available, I'd use ladies

If single gender available, I'd use men's

Partly because I don't identify as woman
Partly because it will help get the message across as to the idiocy of gender toilets
Partly because of the inherent respect that is shown by men not using the ladies increase my trust in them

FreeBritnee · 06/07/2021 11:47

I wouldn’t choose a male or mixed sex space for me however I have young sons so would take advantage of it to accompany them into male spaces.

sailmeaway · 06/07/2021 11:47

the only issue I have with 'unisex' loos is when it actually takes facilities away from women - i.e. women won't go in the mens loos but men are happy to use the womens.
But the modern versions where there are 'everyone' loos or proper communal facilities are fine.

Thecatonthemat · 06/07/2021 11:48

Yes inebriati I wasn’t clear that I wasn’t necessarily talking about toilets. And yes I guess I cannot imagine I would ever choose a male or mixed sex arrangement if I am allowed a choice. Experience tells me such places are not usually safe or desirable. All those experiences relate to men’s behaviour, never women’s .

I wouldnt go to an open changing room but all the local swimming pools near me are unisex cubicles. I wouldnt object to the same for toilets as long as there arent open urinals in the same space.

Gingernaut · 06/07/2021 11:48

Having had a job cleaning men's toilets to help pay my way through college - Team Ladies all the way.

'YANBU = this is a really good idea,

Bit of a biased way to phrase it if you do want genuine answers! Personally, I don't see it as good idea versus DANGER!DANGER!

About 3/4 years ago I in the headquarters of an organisation well known to the Feminist section here - my company had hired a conference room there. We were using their office toilets.

They had women’s, men’s and mixed. Over the course of two days I saw only women use the women’s, and only men use the men’s and mixed toilets. I took notice because that’s what I suspected would happen when I saw the set up! And a few times there was a queue for the women’s (we were all women on the course) - still none of us went to the mixed ones.

Thecatonthemat · 06/07/2021 11:50

sailmeaway why do you think women won’t used the male loos?

OP posts:
Whanganui · 06/07/2021 11:51

I always end up in the men’s bog, quite by accident.

If I’m on holiday I won’t queue I will go straight to the men’s.

Plus there’s men who’re taking their young daughters to the ladies, I’ve seen that a few times.

DdraigGoch · 06/07/2021 11:51

@Clickbait

It depends if it's an individual room (with a door that closes) or a larger facility with cubicles.
If it's a self-contained proper room though, it's unisex rather than mixed-sex as you only go in there one at a time. Mixed sex on the other hand implies mixing which means communal sinks etc.
worktrip · 06/07/2021 11:52

mens toilets stink because many men have no idea of personal responsibility I swear they behave in public toilets like this because they are obliged to be civilised in their home environment.

FindingMeno · 06/07/2021 11:54

I don't actually think of danger as my main reason.
I think of privacy and dignity.

sailmeaway · 06/07/2021 11:55

'sailmeaway why do you think women won’t used the male loos?'

Clearly there are some women, in some settings who would prefer not to use a mens loo with urinals in it if all the venue does is stick up a sign with 'everyone toilet - no urinals' for the womens and 'everyone - with urinals' on it.
I'm thinking of older women ( and men) who go to the theatre or similar.
In those cases that is just reducing the womens loos facilities.

CoalCraft · 06/07/2021 11:55

I choose the facilities with individual cubicles e.g. the swimming pool at Centre Parcs. Seems the obvious solution to all this tbh and I don't get what the fuss is about when that is an option.

MarciaDidia · 06/07/2021 11:55

Toilets - I'd prefer the single sex but would use unisex if properly enclosed cubicles and I didn't have to walk past urinals and I didn't have my period (unless having said period meant I was in a real hurry).

Changing rooms - single sex only. If it's one of those changing rooms with lots of cubicles including family ones then I'd use them if no other option.

dannydyerismydad · 06/07/2021 11:56

Whatever gives me the greatest privacy. Floor to ceiling cubicle with its own sink wins every time. If that happens to be in a mixed sex space, I'm fine with it.

I know it's not a popular opinion here, but I'd also take a unisex "changing village" with individual cubicles over a single space open plan changing room with no privacy any day.

Thecatonthemat · 06/07/2021 11:57

So far it seems that some are prepared to risk it which begs the question, is there anywhere you might have a doubt? Men’s hospital wards, prisons, Freemason events, brothels? Do you think there is no situation that could be dangerous for you as a woman?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/07/2021 11:59

By myself or with DDs... single sex.

However DH would like mixed sex facilities if he was taking DDs out... he hates hanging around outside the ladies, and he never knows if they are taking a long time due to queues or a problem (like locking themselves in.)

Orf1abc · 06/07/2021 12:00

I'd go wherever there is the smallest queue.

Your use of the voting feature is deliberately misleading. I guess it's not just men that manipulate people into giving the answer they want to hear.

Jaxhog · 06/07/2021 12:01

@Vetyveriohohoh

As long as it’s actual cubicles I would choose whichever is quickest
This.

I used a 'unisex' loo once that had been rebadged from a gents. When I came out of the cubicle, there was a man using the urinal.

Bit of a random choice - I wouldn't want to be on a men's hospital ward or even a mixed one. I still don't have an issue with mixed toilet facilities or family/mixed changing at the swimming. Mainly because they're all cubicles.

Not really understanding the point about brothels or freemasons.

sailmeaway · 06/07/2021 12:02

'So far it seems that some are prepared to risk it which begs the question, is there anywhere you might have a doubt? Men’s hospital wards, prisons, Freemason events, brothels? Do you think there is no situation that could be dangerous for you as a woman?'

Risk what exactly? If you're talking about unisex facilities in open settings, then I'm fine about that.
I've never stayed on a men's ward ( I do think all wards should be single sex), I've never been in prison -mens or womens, I'm not a Freemasons, nor am I likely to be one, and as for brothels - surely who uses what loo at a fecking brothel is the least of the sex workers concerns?? Again, not being a prostitute I can really speak to the facilities in a brothel.
But am I happy to use a changing village? Yes, I prefer it over a big room full of women changing together.
