Will you continue to wear a mask when they’re no longer compulsory?

I can’t really decide how I feel about it- as a pregnant woman with a tendency to get a bit sweaty in the face on warm days, I would like not to have to wear one whenever I’m inside a building that isn’t my own home. And I’m double jabbed so not at much risk. But then you’ve got people from SAGE and the BMA saying we should keep wearing them, and I’d imagine they know a bit better than Sajid Javid whose background is in finance.

What do you think?

YABU- I’ll continue to wear a mask
YANBU - I won’t be wearing a mask anymore.

I will continue to wear a mask in shops etc. Masks are there to protect others and I’m not selfish.

Seasidemumma77 · 05/07/2021 14:21

I'm not giving up on the mask completely. I intend to continue wearing a mask on public transport and in busy places.

therocinante · 05/07/2021 14:21

Yeah my use probably won't change - I haven't had a cold in 18 months and colds tend to come with horrible recurrent ear infections for me, so I really wish we had the same approach as the general public in countries where people wear a mask in public if they're under the weather.

Plus, it's a small amount of 'sacrifice' on my behalf (if you can call 'having to remember a mask' a sacrifice) for potentially protecting people, so I'm okay with it.

I know 5 people with Covid right now - all of them double jabbed. 2 are really poorly. I don't feel like possibly helping someone more vulnerable than them stay away from the virus is a hardship for me.

LondonJax · 05/07/2021 14:22

I'm like many on here. I'll keep one with me to wear if I feel the need. I imagine that will be on crowded transport more than anything. I remember thinking how daft it was when DS and I went on a train for an appointment recently. There were three other people in our part of the carriage, but masks had to stay on despite most of the windows being open and everyone seated well away from each other. But, if that had been in rush hour, then yes I'd have accepted it gladly.

I'm definitely not burning ours. In the winter I would imagine we'll dig them out regardless with all the flu or cold coughs and splutters even if Covd miraculously disappeared. As it is I see a call to mask going up in the winters for quite a few years to come.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/07/2021 14:22

@Flossy05

Definitely yes! I want to protect others. It would be nice if they would do the same for me but the reality is that most folk don’t give a toss about anyone else.
Most folks, like myself, were very much giving a fuck about others for year and half...
viques · 05/07/2021 14:23

Yes I will. I live in London and in most parts of London only about 50/60% of adults have had their first vaccine, and less than 40% their second. (So much for 100% of adults to have had a first vaccine by July 19th ,) there is still a lot of that virus doing the rounds.

dalegirlinthedales · 05/07/2021 14:23

Absolutely not. As soon as they are no longer legally mandated mine will be gone and I hope they don't come back.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 05/07/2021 14:23

@SpindleWhorl

Yes, but for health reasons. I'm CEV and immunesuppressed, so can't really afford to catch any virus let alone Covid.

I've had two AZ jabs but didn't have any detectable antibodies two weeks after the 2nd one, disappointingly.

I hope I don't have to put up with stupid comments about still wearing one.

that's very interesting @SpindleWhorl

my household is in a testing trial and we had an antibody test after our first jabs-can't remember exactly how long after but couple of weeks?
I had pfizer and had antibodies and DH had AZ and did not have antibodies. DS was double jabbed at this point-pfizer and had antibodies as well.

Just tested again yesterday and had second jabs over a month ago so really hoping he has some now!!!

LondonJax · 05/07/2021 14:23

@therocinante - same here. No tummy bugs, no colds, no ear infections at all last year. And I'm prone to chest infections - never a year goes by when I'm not on antibiotics for something (mild asthmatic). I haven't had one in 18 months despite working at a school.

DrunkenKoala · 05/07/2021 14:24

Busy indoor spaces then I’ll probably will continue, quiet indoor space then probably not. I will continue to sanitise my hands when out shopping or generally out and about (never used to before the pandemic).

slashlover · 05/07/2021 14:25

I will on the bus and in crowded shops, probably on the shop floor at work but not in the staff area etc. It will pretty much be dependent on the situation.

I use reusable masks which were recommended on here at the beginning, they don't make my glasses steam up and come in lovely patterns.

Chipsahoy · 05/07/2021 14:26

Once I get my second jab I’ll only wear them in very enclosed spaces, such as on a train.

EmpressSuiko · 05/07/2021 14:26

I will be continuing to wear mine indoors or if I ever find myself passing through a very crowded area.

QOD · 05/07/2021 14:27

just like 50% I will pick and chose.
I went to China and Japan in early 2019 and bought some masks #ironic as I had horrendous allergies to the friggin cherry bloosom we had travelled to see and had a chat with our Japanese guide about them.

They wear them for allergies, pollution and politeness, keep germs to your self, protect others

Last time I went on a crappy commercial flight in 2019 I got a horrendous cough/cold/chest infection because I was too self conscious to wear the masks I had bought to wear ...

randomlyLostInWales · 05/07/2021 14:27

May well continue on trains - especially packed ones - and buses and possibly in busy shops or other packed places but do look forward to having the option of choice.

I'd wear them just to get waiting rooms back -because I'd really like them back in any form as not driving I've had to stand outside sometimes with kids or pets for long periods in shit weather - really wet or very cold.

SpindleWhorl · 05/07/2021 14:27

@mumsiedarlingrevolta (great name!) I was thinking that when I get the booster, I should try to go for the Pfizer?

Laiste · 05/07/2021 14:29

@Crunchymum

I'll keep one in my bag but I won't be wearing for shits and giggles.

I just want the kids school to stop making us wear them for pick up / drop off which is out-bloody-side

YES to this!

Ditto no one allowed to wait in the playground and instead everyone having to queue round the block in single file.

Everyone else in the village who needs to walk round the block has to squeeze past all these nattering bare faced parents on the teeny tiny narrow path. Bloody silly. The masks all go on as we walk through the gate Hmm

cuparfull · 05/07/2021 14:32

Yes I'll still be wearing them in crowded areas indoors, especially in winter when it keeps my cheeks warm Grin

I also like the fact I've not had a cold for 18 months, no laryngitis or tight chest with my cold symptoms. That's been an uptick to this awful situation even tho my specs misting up are an inconvenience....

ExConstance · 05/07/2021 14:32

I certainly won't wear mine any more. I have not enjoyed shopping or restaurant visits as much when wearing a mask, also they make me feel a bit giddy. I'm looking forwrd so much to going up to a bar and ordering a pint, as nature intended.

Slub · 05/07/2021 14:33

No

Aprilx · 05/07/2021 14:34

I answered no, but in reflection I might wear one on the train to London if I is crowded, I don’t need to travel during rush hour so hopefully can avoid busy trains. I might encourage DH to wear it on the train as he will be in rush hour, but I don’t know if he will.

Congressdingo · 05/07/2021 14:34

@RubixCubix

Unless the government also decide to start paying the full wages of anyone who is off work with Covid then yes I'll continue to wear a mask. I work with lots of vulnerable people so wouldn't be able to go to work if I caught Covid, and as it's a zero-hour contract then no work= no pay.

Quite simply, I can't afford not to wear one. See also: social distancing and avoiding crowded places.

Similar, if I get sick and need time off, I will be paid the bare minimum. I dont use public transport much but I will wear a mask if I do. I haven't had a cold since mask wearing was made compulsory so just for that alone I will mostly wear one, I think shops and shopping centres should keep the rule too. I do find them difficult to wear though.
Cam77 · 05/07/2021 14:34

not convinced they make any difference tbc, fishing bits of damp cloth out of handbags and pockets

The research shows they do. Which is why our government and a couple of others (not to mention the WHO) were forced into an embarrassing 180 about 12 months ago.

cuparfull · 05/07/2021 14:34

Oh and its relieved the hay fever symptoms so thereby reduced OTC tablet taking.

SuperstoreFan · 05/07/2021 14:34

Yes we will, I strongly believe that Bojo is trying to get herd immunity through vaccinations and infections.
