Will you continue to wear a mask when they’re no longer compulsory?

I can’t really decide how I feel about it- as a pregnant woman with a tendency to get a bit sweaty in the face on warm days, I would like not to have to wear one whenever I’m inside a building that isn’t my own home. And I’m double jabbed so not at much risk. But then you’ve got people from SAGE and the BMA saying we should keep wearing them, and I’d imagine they know a bit better than Sajid Javid whose background is in finance.

What do you think?

YABU- I’ll continue to wear a mask
YANBU - I won’t be wearing a mask anymore.

I’ll burn all of mine

ScottishNewbie · 05/07/2021 14:03

Absolutely not.
Masks break me out, make me anxious and feel claustrophobic. I comply and follow the current rules, but will be stopping as soon as possible.

TiptopJ · 05/07/2021 14:03

I will in supermarkets and small or busy shops mainly protect myself but also the shop staff at work and the customers who can't have the vaccine.

CornishGem1975 · 05/07/2021 14:04

Generally, no but I may do from time to time depending on the circumstances.

Notstrongandstable · 05/07/2021 14:06

Yes because it's the right thing to do

littledrummergirl · 05/07/2021 14:06

No. I hate the bloody things.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/07/2021 14:08

No, I stopped in January after going a panic attack too far and sensory overwhelm was tipping into a form of self-harming. It was reaching a point where leaving the house to go shopping was becoming an issue.
Miraculously, I haven't had to wear a cumbersome ventilator around the supermarket since.

Thank you to the kind and condiderate people who will be ceasing to wear masks, the 6m hearing impaired people in the UK will be glad to lipread and maximise clarity of speech again. Plus the benefit to those with other communication and social difficulties who also benefit from facial expressions.

Fortunately the vaccine is far more effective at reducing transmission than the typical dubious quality face covering that most people wear to get on without aggro.

Branleuse · 05/07/2021 14:08

No. Ill carry one and wear it if i think it would be a good idea, but ive been struggling more and more with wearing them and will be glad to not have it enforced. Have been double vaccinated though and will continue to social distance as much as possible and use hand gel

BlackCherryCandle · 05/07/2021 14:09

Our headteacher has said we'll still have to wear them in September for pick up and drop off unless exempt which I was hoping would be the place they're scrapped first tbh.

I don't mind in the supermarket so will keep wearing if I'm told to but if I don't have to I won't.

rwalker · 05/07/2021 14:09

I think I will on the train .

Flossy05 · 05/07/2021 14:10

Definitely yes! I want to protect others. It would be nice if they would do the same for me but the reality is that most folk don’t give a toss about anyone else.

VeryLongBeeeeep · 05/07/2021 14:12

In some places yes - shops etc. DH is CEV so we'll continue being cautious for a while.

Lightningrain · 05/07/2021 14:13

It amuses me how dramatic some people are saying they’re going to burn their masks. It reminds me of being in the last year of school and everyone thinking it was clever to announce they were burning their exercise books or uniform on the last day. Who’s to say we won’t need them again at some stage - the single use ones are already incredibly bad for the environment without having to buy more reusable ones as the original ones have been needlessly burnt.

FWIW I’ll go by the people around me when I decide whether or not to wear one going forward. I’m conscious that there are still vulnerable people out there that would possibly benefit from me being mildly inconvenienced in the supermarket or on the bus. I won’t be wearing one for say the 30 seconds it takes me to move to/from my table in a pub/bar/restaurant but I don’t see an issue with keeping some with me to wear now and again in a crowded place.

MeanderingGently · 05/07/2021 14:13

Yes, I will, but I will choose the time and place. I shan't bother outside, at all. I will wear it in crowded places, supermarkets, trains and if car sharing.

I shall also continue to sanitise my shopping and wear gloves when pushing a supermarket trolley about....I was always a germaphobe long before the days of COVID and now PPE has become "a thing" I feel much happier about going about in public!

pussycatlickinglollyices · 05/07/2021 14:14

Yep. I will.
If only to mitigate against the arsehole man who was coughing and sneezing and lifting his mask up in Sainsburys on Saturday at 7am I ran around after that to get away from him he said something about "hayfever" to his wife/gf and she rolled her eyes and walked away...🤷🏻‍♀️

Crowsaregreat · 05/07/2021 14:14

Yes, I'll keep wearing mine. I don't think anything has changed apart from that the government has got bored of being in charge of a crisis and wants the popularity points of declaring that we're 'free' now.

I wouldn't rush to throw masks out either, case numbers are soaring and relaxing the rules will probably result in new vaccine-resistant variants that have us locked down again by the winter.

lemonsandgingerbeer · 05/07/2021 14:15

I live in a place where they're no longer compulsory (and here they've been compulsory everywhere, indoors and outdoors, for quite some time)

Despite no longer being compulsory, most people are continuing to wear them anywhere they might be within a couple of metres of one another, and taking them off when in more distanced spaces.

I appreciate it.

I like that people are moving at their own pace, and still considering others.

I also like how little I've been cat-called on the street since my face has been covered. I may continue wearing my mask purely for that reason.

Couldn't agree more.

True
bogoffmda · 05/07/2021 14:17

On the tube in rush hour I will be!

Classica · 05/07/2021 14:18

On public transport and in shops and public buildings, of course! Such a simple and effective public health tool that has unfortunately been turned into the latest dull instalment of this culture war.

Israel has re-introduced masks in the last week or so, so it will be interesting to see if similar happens here.

Laiste · 05/07/2021 14:18

Nope.

Interestingly, putting on a mask became second nature to me v.quickly, even though i hated it. However over the last 2 months or so i keep on genuinely completely forgetting to put one on and find myself blithely wandering about in where ever (tesco/DCs swimming lessons/petrol station shop) without one on Blush Never been challenged. I panic and put one on when i realise of course, but why now?

The other thing just lately is that i'm putting it on in the carpark/front of building, wearing it through the doors and then whisking it off after i've walked in! ConfusedBlush Obviously gone slightly bonkers.

Rothko2929 · 05/07/2021 14:19

No, but I am not militant about it. If others struggle because I’m not wearing then I’ll don one. I think they’re a bit of theatre really, like lots of the rules.

Chanel05 · 05/07/2021 14:19

No, never.

Crunchymum · 05/07/2021 14:19

I'll keep one in my bag but I won't be wearing for shits and giggles.

I just want the kids school to stop making us wear them for pick up / drop off which is out-bloody-side
