Will you continue to wear a mask when they’re no longer compulsory?

I can’t really decide how I feel about it- as a pregnant woman with a tendency to get a bit sweaty in the face on warm days, I would like not to have to wear one whenever I’m inside a building that isn’t my own home. And I’m double jabbed so not at much risk. But then you’ve got people from SAGE and the BMA saying we should keep wearing them, and I’d imagine they know a bit better than Sajid Javid whose background is in finance.

What do you think?

YABU- I’ll continue to wear a mask
YANBU - I won’t be wearing a mask anymore.

Yes - to protect others.

Jubbies · 05/07/2021 13:19

Nope, all masks going in the recycling asap.

Eeyoreswigwam · 05/07/2021 13:20

Yes in certain situations.

Wannakisstheteacher · 05/07/2021 13:20

Absolutely not. The second I can stop, I will be.

HelloDulling · 05/07/2021 13:23

I’m almost at the bottom of my box of disposable masks, and was debating this morning whether to buy more. I decided that I would; for public transport and other busy things. Can’t wait to ditch them for work though (in a school, but not a teacher).

SpindleWhorl · 05/07/2021 13:24

Yes, but for health reasons. I'm CEV and immunesuppressed, so can't really afford to catch any virus let alone Covid.

I've had two AZ jabs but didn't have any detectable antibodies two weeks after the 2nd one, disappointingly.

I hope I don't have to put up with stupid comments about still wearing one.

WorraLiberty · 05/07/2021 13:25

Probably only on the London underground, when packed in like sardines.

AutistGoth · 05/07/2021 13:25

I know that I'm definitely in a minority and I accept that, but I actually like wearing mine. I have some that a friend made for me with sugar skull fabric and they have sentimental value. I like the fact that I don't have to bother with make up whilst wearing them and the lower half of my face and chin are protected from UV rays. Yes, they make my glasses steam up a bit, but there are various ways to deal with that.

Also, it means that old men can't tell me to smile more because I look so pretty smiling, grrr that gives me the rage! Angry

Lazypuppy · 05/07/2021 13:26

100% no, cannot wait!

BanditoShipman · 05/07/2021 13:26

Yes for supermarkets etc, I hate normal colds and haven’t had one since using masks/hand sanitiser etc so think will continue

WeatherSystems · 05/07/2021 13:27

Absolutely not. I've worn one for as long as they've been mandated, and it's been awful. I find myself adjusting my breathing without thinking about it to try avoid breathing out into it too much and making it get all hot and sweaty, my skin is terrible (from clear skin to a jawline full of spots), and I can't actually figure out how to wear them with glasses as I get so steamed up I can't see much. I also miss wearing lipstick.

The moment they're no longer required I'll be ditching mine without a second glance.

Youdiditanyway · 05/07/2021 13:27

Depends where. Probably won’t bother on the school run anymore because it’s outdoors and the system they currently have means I don’t stand in a big gaggle of people anymore. Will most likely wear it in shops and if I ever use public transport.

AutistGoth · 05/07/2021 13:28

I will clarify that I've only ever worn washable masks, never disposable ones.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2021 13:28

@WorraLiberty

Probably only on the London underground, when packed in like sardines.
Yes, I think I'd still wear one on public transport or anywhere that is similarly crowded but that's about it.
TellySavalashairbrush · 05/07/2021 13:28

Definitely. I know I’m not the majority, but I quite like the fact that I can go out and we somewhat protected from smells, germs and not have to worry about putting on lipstick Grin. I also have quite low self esteem and it does act as a bit of a comfort blanket.

Crowtooyo · 05/07/2021 13:29

For me I'm looking forward to not having to wear them as it has been constantly flaring my eczema up however I understand why they are important so I will probably follow the lead of others.

RubixCubix · 05/07/2021 13:29

Unless the government also decide to start paying the full wages of anyone who is off work with Covid then yes I'll continue to wear a mask. I work with lots of vulnerable people so wouldn't be able to go to work if I caught Covid, and as it's a zero-hour contract then no work= no pay.

Quite simply, I can't afford not to wear one. See also: social distancing and avoiding crowded places.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 05/07/2021 13:30

Yes I will.

I wear disposables because they're the only ones that don't steam up my glasses and make me feel suffocated but once on I can easily wear one for hours as needed.

I wear a new one for each outing, don't re-use them and snip the straps before disposing of them.

I'm double jabbed and low risk, as far as I know I've never had Covid but I do think I have a responsibility to do what I reasonably can to reduce the spread and for me wearing a mask and keeping my hands clean is painless and low effort so why wouldn't I do it?

I have a child at primary school who is probably a long way away from being vaccinated and has also not had Covid as far as we're aware. So far we haven't had any cases in her class and she's not had to self isolate as a contact at any point, she's also not had to test yet as never had symptoms. Her school are doing a great job at keeping the school open and minimising contact between bubbles, they are asking parents to wear masks in the playground and if doing that helps to keep the kids in the school, then again, why wouldn't I do that, it's a small price to pay.

FourTeaFallOut · 05/07/2021 13:31

No. I have difficulty breathing at the best of times and masks make it harder. I can manage a quick trip around the shops or a longer stretch if I'm sat down and I've avoided situations outside of those scenarios. Technically I could be considered exempt but I have real issues about parading my illness.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to ditching the mask entirely.

nomorespaghetti · 05/07/2021 13:32

I won’t, unless I’m seeing someone 1:1 indoors, and they really feel uncomfortable without masks. I don’t mind wearing one at the doctors or in a hospital either. But generally, out and about, no. I’ve worn one pretty consistently throughout, to the detriment of my deaf 5-year old, but when they’re no longer mandatory I won’t be.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 05/07/2021 13:33

No. Mass binning of masks on 19th hopefully for us

ArnoldJudasRimmer · 05/07/2021 13:33

I would, but if no-one else is, I might not. I'll be avoiding busy places for a week or so after "freedom day" though, if social distancing and masks go at the same time I want to avoid the spike it might bring. Online shopping and taking the kids to open spaces until it dies down/we don't see a jump in numbers.

HoldingTheDoor · 05/07/2021 13:33

Absolutely not.

Lavender24 · 05/07/2021 13:34

I don't wear one now so nope.

Akire · 05/07/2021 13:34

I will, the only people I have close contact with are in shops. Really don’t bother me and have at least stoped me getting coughs and colds and the weeks that takes me to get over with other Health conditions.

Those saying they don’t protect the wearer really don’t understand it very much. I have chronic illness and if a mask stops me being really ill from covid or anything else I will gladly put up with it.
