Will you continue to wear a mask when they’re no longer compulsory?

I can’t really decide how I feel about it- as a pregnant woman with a tendency to get a bit sweaty in the face on warm days, I would like not to have to wear one whenever I’m inside a building that isn’t my own home. And I’m double jabbed so not at much risk. But then you’ve got people from SAGE and the BMA saying we should keep wearing them, and I’d imagine they know a bit better than Sajid Javid whose background is in finance.

What do you think?

YABU- I’ll continue to wear a mask
YANBU - I won’t be wearing a mask anymore.

There is an antifog spray which worked. Cheap one, silver packaging. And proper metal bit on nose part. Live savers

Confiscatedfidgetspinner · 05/07/2021 13:51

Can’t come soon enough. Absolutely not.

Lovemusic33 · 05/07/2021 13:51

I think a lot of people will use their own judgement.

I don’t go to many busy places, shops here are pretty quite (I don’t go at the weekends) so there’s not many places I will feel the need to wear a mask. Places like hospitals I would probably wear one, to protect me and others.

adeleh · 05/07/2021 13:51

Yes. Part of reason the virus didn’t spread in places like Taiwan etc is that Asians have a culture of mask wearing. It protects others. It’s amazing to see people blithely asserting that it makes no,difference, when Sage thinks it does make a difference.

Justcallmebebes · 05/07/2021 13:51

And that's a no from me too

ragged · 05/07/2021 13:53

No. I'll carry one if someone (like a shopkeeper) asks for it, though.

I will be rather surprised if not still required on public transport for a while.

CBroads · 05/07/2021 13:53

Absolutely will not be wearing on anymore.
We lived upto this point without them, we don't need them. People should be left to make their own decision but no one should be shamed for not wearing one. Kinda like the people who have chosen not to get the vaccine, being bad mouthed for it. Get a life.

Confiscatedfidgetspinner · 05/07/2021 13:54

The same SAGE that thought they were useless in March/ April 2020? Forgive me if I don’t hold them in the same reverence that some do on here.

Anon08 · 05/07/2021 13:54

I will continue in places where continuous mask wearing is currently needed but probably won’t in restaurants etc as you’re not wearing one sat down anyway.

AngeloMysterioso · 05/07/2021 13:55

@BanditoShipman

Yes for supermarkets etc, I hate normal colds and haven’t had one since using masks/hand sanitiser etc so think will continue
Is that a good thing though? I mean having a cold sucks but I’ve always seen it as a necessary evil, I think our immune systems have taken a bit of a hit from the dramatically reduced exposure to germs/bacteria. They were saying on the news that people getting colds now are being hit twice as hard as usual because our immune systems have gone to crap.

@Muscaria

Yes for this reason you’ve got people from SAGE and the BMA saying we should keep wearing them, and I’d imagine they know a bit better than Sajid Javid whose background is in finance
This.

It's interesting the number of armchair scientists who think wearing a mask is pointless. SJ is a Tory. They've a history of not giving a fuck about people. Of course they're going to say that wearing masks should be a personal choice.

PhilSwagielka · 05/07/2021 13:56

I will if it's cold/windy, because my nasal passages are a bit sensitive after the surgery I had.

LucindaT73 · 05/07/2021 13:57

In some situations, yes.

I've been double jabbed but

I'd like more info on how much a mask would protect me though as I'm in the older age range and feel more concerned about catching it.

I'd certainly wear one on the tube.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 05/07/2021 13:57

Yes, I will.

It makes absolutely no sense to abandon precautions in the middle of a wave of cases. In my work a dozen people have caught it in the last two weeks (that's about half of the staff) so yes, I'll still be cautious.

I won't stop caring about my own health and the health of others' just because Boris Johnson has decided he's bored of all this pandemic nonsense, and wants the glory of a non-existent and previous 'Freedom Day'. FFS.

KingPong · 05/07/2021 13:57

No chance. We’re going to end up dying of a common cold if we don’t mix and build up immunity.

TheDogsMother · 05/07/2021 13:58

No but I will carry one in case a specific situation requires it.

I do have my doubts how effective masks really are when people wear them for too long without changing/washing them, wear them hanging under chins, under noses or generally keep touching them.

EatingAllThePies · 05/07/2021 13:59

I really dislike them but I think I'll keep mine in busy shops and the commute as I'm hoping to reduce my colds in normal times, it made a real difference this year!

Akire · 05/07/2021 13:59

The protect others not the wearer thing please. If you are doctor on covid ward and everyone has it. So it’s ok take your yours off because everyone has covid and they don’t protect you getting it Grin Think money nhs could saved on PPE if that was true!

mindutopia · 05/07/2021 13:59

Yes, I probably will for busy places, like the supermarket or the train (whenever I get back on a train, that is - I suppose if it's not soon than it's less of an issue). I'm not bothered by wearing them and if it's possible to still transmit even while fully vaccinated, then I'd rather not be off with dc being ill.

LucindaT73 · 05/07/2021 13:59

The point of wearing a mask is so you don't pass on your symptoms to others.

If you are not yet double jabbed , you do risk catching it, being symptomless and passing it on.

Way back, we were told it doesn't protect the wearer. I'd like more stats on this and I'm sure a lot depends on the type of mask.

MaudesMum · 05/07/2021 14:00

Crowded places, yes, not crowded places - no. So, would on the train, wouldn't on the empty outdoor platform waiting to get on the train.

I will, of course, comply with any rules/requests that individual shops/buildings/offices put in place because I'm not a dick. But I might roll my eyes and avoid them in future if the rules seem nonsensical to me.

Echobelly · 05/07/2021 14:00

While infection is still high I will keep wearing a mask on indoor areas where I'm in there for more than a few minutes. I've recently had second jab & in fact 19th July is when I'll be 'fully covered', but given infection levels I will keep wearing a mask on public transport, supermarket, cinema until infection has fallen.

I might drop it for popping into corner shop, as I'm usually in there for a minute or 2, tops - it says something that the keeper does not appear to have been ill once this whole time, despite coming into contact with so many people, but just briefly each time.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 05/07/2021 14:01

It depends on what my son's hospital says.

Many people in medical settings use a different type.

At my dentist they use very different types- better ones- and a visor, together.

TokyoSushi · 05/07/2021 14:02

I don't think so although I'll likely keep one in my bag in case public transport is particularly busy or similar. Ther were quite warm in the winter!
