Will you continue to wear a mask when they’re no longer compulsory?

I can’t really decide how I feel about it- as a pregnant woman with a tendency to get a bit sweaty in the face on warm days, I would like not to have to wear one whenever I’m inside a building that isn’t my own home. And I’m double jabbed so not at much risk. But then you’ve got people from SAGE and the BMA saying we should keep wearing them, and I’d imagine they know a bit better than Sajid Javid whose background is in finance.

What do you think?

YABU- I’ll continue to wear a mask
YANBU - I won’t be wearing a mask anymore.

Absolutely not

LadyJaye · 05/07/2021 18:54

Yes, I probably will.

I used to live in East Asia (specifically Japan/S Korea) and personally I always quite liked the fact that it was a given that, if you had a wee snuffle or something, you wore a mask in public to protect others.

I'm happy to carry on with this.

phoenixrosehere · 05/07/2021 18:55

I will. I don’t think we’re quite out of the woods yet and I rather not take them off only to likely have to put them back on again because they loosened the restrictions (once again) too soon.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 05/07/2021 18:55

Yes, I will. I have no intention of using public transport or going shopping without one. It was refreshing not to have any serious colds or a bout of flu this last winter.

mamawithfive · 05/07/2021 18:59

I live abroad so slightly different rules! We no longer have to wear them outside, as long as we can social distance. We have to carry one with us in case of turning a corner and coming to a large crowd etc.
Most people still wear them in built up areas.
It's still mandatory to wear them anywhere indoors - which I think I would probably continue to do so even if one day it's obligatory. Especially in supermarkets when some people do get right up close to you!
But it's lovely going outside for walks, walking the kids to park etc, and not having to have a mask on.
People say they don't work. But our schools have worn them since September and managed the whole school year with no isolations, no home schooling etc- so they must do something!

Whammyyammy · 05/07/2021 18:59

Hell no, the minute its announced we don't have to, mine are going in the fire pit.

SquirrelFan · 05/07/2021 19:01

@HomerSimpsonsDonut In order to protect other people. I work in a school (where social distancing is nigh-impossible, masks are reduced to chin-warmers by forgetful children, and any attempt at ventilation is met with, "ooo, it's chilly" by a teacher in a sleeveless dress) full of unvaccinated teens. If one of them passes the virus to me, then I will be much less likely to pass it on to anyone else if I am wearing a mask.

SquirrelFan · 05/07/2021 19:04

@HomerSimpsonsDonut There is also the fact that the more people have the virus, the more likely it is to mutate, and thus escape our vaccination program.

Longdistance · 05/07/2021 19:04

Can’t wait to not wear the bloody things. I’m asthmatic and wearing them is a struggle when in shops.
We’re going to London in August, I will wear it on the tube.
Not sure what they’ll do for schools yet? My dd is isolating. She tested negative last week and was off, but no she still has to isolate.

NigellaSeed · 05/07/2021 19:07

Probably not. But maybe in certain situations.
I'd still wear one all the time if it protected me but it supposedly protects other people and if I'm the only one in a busy shop wearing one then I'm not gonna be protecting anyone. 🤷

HomerSimpsonsDonut · 05/07/2021 19:10

@SquirrelFan totally understand why you would continue to wear one. Especially working in a school environment- I probably would too.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 05/07/2021 19:14

Nope.

SquirrelFan · 05/07/2021 19:16

@HomerSimpsonsDonut Thanks!

@NigellaSeed But you will! You will be protecting everyone in that shop from you!

RuggerHug · 05/07/2021 19:16

You'll be protecting everyone you come in contact with after being in that shop.
Ratalie · 05/07/2021 19:17

Yes I'll probably continue to wear them in indoor public spaces for a while, but I'm not someone who finds wearing a mask particularly difficult.

sanityisamyth · 05/07/2021 19:17

No. Absolutely not. I'm double jabbed and have no underlying conditions that I know of. I've been sticking religiously to the rules for the last 16 months and am totally sick of it now.

Treehaus · 05/07/2021 19:18

I don't mind to be honest.

PotassiumChloride · 05/07/2021 19:18

I’ll stop wearing them but accept others will take a different view. Each to their own.

MilkAndBiscuits · 05/07/2021 19:18

I will for hospital and doctor appointments and if i get on public transport but to be honest, thats one thing i wont do for atleast the rest of this year,

fussychica · 05/07/2021 19:19

It's been great not getting any colds or flu this year which may or may not be partly down to wearing a mask.
I'll only wear one inside busy supermarkets or on the very rare occasions I travel on public transport. It will be lovely to browse in the few remaining shops without a mask - I might even hang around long enough to buy something I don't needGrin

IcedPurple · 05/07/2021 19:22

@Taswama

Nope. Amazed by the split of votes, I've never seen such an even AIBu poll before!
I often find that AIBU polls don't reflect the generality of the comments.

Nearly 50-50 in the poll, but comments are mostly of the 'Absolutely not!' variety.

To which I add my voice. Absolutely no way will I be wearing one of those wretched things a second longer than I have to.

NigellaSeed · 05/07/2021 19:22

It only really works if everyone is wearing a mask though

NigellaSeed · 05/07/2021 19:23

Sorry that was to @RuggerHug

CookPassBabtridge · 05/07/2021 19:23

They ruin my makeup and I love my lips! I miss being able to hear people and see people smiling.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 05/07/2021 19:29

Not unless I'm in an environment where there could be a lot of vulnerable people - care home, hospital etc. I've worn one as required throughout and really, really struggled with it, after 5 mins I feel breathless and dizzy.
