Will you continue to wear a mask when they’re no longer compulsory?

I can’t really decide how I feel about it- as a pregnant woman with a tendency to get a bit sweaty in the face on warm days, I would like not to have to wear one whenever I’m inside a building that isn’t my own home. And I’m double jabbed so not at much risk. But then you’ve got people from SAGE and the BMA saying we should keep wearing them, and I’d imagine they know a bit better than Sajid Javid whose background is in finance.

What do you think?

YABU- I’ll continue to wear a mask
YANBU - I won’t be wearing a mask anymore.

Yes I will, and I hope many do the same to offer me some added protection.

altus · 05/07/2021 17:58

No. I am car-free so I use public transport a lot but usually off-peak, and it's rarely very busy. I don't spend much time in shops and will continue to do all my grocery shopping online as it's just more convenient. But I take my dc to lots of indoor attractions so we spend a fair bit of time in indoor public places. I've only ever worn a mask when it was legally required and I've never been too concerned about being at high risk, so I'll stop wearing one when it's no longer compulsory. I will keep hold of my masks as I wouldn't be surprised if they're brought back, and I will keep one in my handbag in case it's requested in the odd venue, or clinics etc.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/07/2021 17:59

It's better allowing a more natural flow of cases and building immune systems in general in the summer than shunting along until the autumn and generating more exaggerated peaks and troughs as we did last year.

We opened up too late last year and bunched up the maximum extent of reopening until August/ Sept, mixed people for the first time in nearly 6 months particularly for young people in schools/ unis and watched an early cold season and build-up of cases as people's vitamin D levels become depleted.

University students will have had the opportunity to be double vaccinated by the time their term returns.

It is better not to delay the inevitable and get rid of the social and economic barriers now.

CynsterBitch · 05/07/2021 18:04

I’ll keep carrying one with me so i can wear it if it gets a bit crowded (mainly on public transport i imagine). I shop at quiet times so din’t feel the need to where them there, i assume shops will keep their plexiglass up so their workers still have that protection.

SquirrelFan · 05/07/2021 18:05

Absofrickinglutely. Can't believe people who are willing to put others at risk.

RuggerHug · 05/07/2021 18:11

To be fair, I'm quite sweary so probably do come across a bit angry when it's just my default way of communicating Wink. Also as I said upthread, I'm not in the UK so for now most people saying here they don't want masks won't affect me for now. But since it's a discussion and it's anonymous I thought I'd ask. I don't agree with a fair amount of the comments here but I doubt anyone would change their minds based on anything I could say.

That was for homersimpsonsdonut bloody quote feature...

Oh yeah, let's follow America's lead. They've done so well

There are States that have done well, and States that have not. Things are mandated at that level.

That said, people were screeching that Texas was going to explode in cases once they ditched the mask mandate ... but no such thing happened. No accountability for these people, but experts who dare to go against the prevailing opinions get piled upon (Dr Sunetra, for one)

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/07/2021 18:14

Yep. Still expected to in the classroom where we are due to high numbers (two more half years gone off again today). To be fair even before Covid I was a hand sanitising freak and often put my scars over my face in supermarkets!

It's got the point that we are going to have to learn to live with it. I don't understand why you'd choose to wear it when we don't have to?
Tanfastic · 05/07/2021 18:16

Nope, I already have to wear one for 8 hours a day at work and that isn't changing.

RolloTomassi · 05/07/2021 18:18

No way! Of all the rules this is the one I'm happiest to see the back of.

Movealongmovealong · 05/07/2021 18:23

Tanfastic so in a heavily populated area , where transmission is easily made - you would happily pass a deadly virus (to some - you know not who) ... because- essentially, you are bored .

Unbelievably selfish.

No I will not be doing away with face masks unless I am outside - therefore with plenty of ventilation.. a d not within 'spitting distance' of another person.

I'm not an idiotic.

glasshalfemptyneverfull · 05/07/2021 18:24

If my patients want to see me face to face the I will request and expect them to be wearing a mask.
I will also be wearing one.

Movealongmovealong · 05/07/2021 18:24

That's not what is happening though. The virus isn't being doled out at the door by someone not wearing a mask.

Seahawk80 · 05/07/2021 18:29

I will continue in busy inside places like supermarket/ tube. I'm pregnant and still 8 weeks until my second vaccine. Hoping I can get it sooner but even then I'd still wear a mask if anywhere is busy.

MirandaMarple · 05/07/2021 18:31

YANBU

I'm going to burn the bastards.

Squirrelblanket · 05/07/2021 18:40

Nope.

FlaminEckVera · 05/07/2021 18:40

@AngeloMysterioso Hmmm, yes I will continue to wear a mask. But I don't mind -or care - if others don't, and I won't judge them.

It has been hard going some days, and I have had to remove my mask for 30 seconds or so, just to have a breather, so I don't blame people for thinking 'YESSS! NO MORE MASKS!'

But yep, I will wear one as much as I can. Smile

Interesting poll results. 50-50! Grin

ChloeCrocodile · 05/07/2021 18:49

I’ll be ditching mine once I’ve had my second vaccine. I’m very low risk for covid personally (I’d happily have mixed and seen people for over a year if I only had to consider myself), and I think that having a vaccine to protect others is good enough tbh.

AngeloMysterioso · 05/07/2021 18:49

I can’t believe it’s 50/50 after nearly 1100 votes! Must be some sort of AIBU first.

Good for mn who gets posts out of us disagreeing ;

MagnoliaXYZ · 05/07/2021 18:52

Absolutely not, just hope work doesn't enforce continued wearing if masks
