AIBU to think this is workable?

Well, just about!

Desperately need extra ££ to fund last bits of a house renovation and the extra to cover for a garden studio. I currently work PT in the NHS in an admin position (2 days at home, 1 day in office) but have just been offered a 30hr nights role at Sainsbury's. My week would look like this.
Sunday 9pm-7am
Monday 8-4
Tuesday 8-4
Wednesday 8-4 then 9pm-7am
Thursday 9pm-7am
Friday - off
Saturday off
Sunday 9pm-7am again.

AIBU to think I can cram it all in as a short term solution? My 2 kids are at FT nursery and primary school, wraparound begins in September again so husband/me can drop from 7:30/8am.

The only day that looks hard work is the Monday as I'll be up potentially for 18 hours.

I think it sounds exhausting if you're combining night shifts with a day job. Could you maybe see if Sainsbury's will let you do less hours? Or have you got any other ways that you could potentially raise the money without working yourself into the ground? Roughly what amount are you wanting to raise? Maybe some of us on here can come up with other ideas for you to raise it?

lockdownwithwhoresdrawers · 04/07/2021 22:38

Approx £13,000 !

Also if anyone has any insider knowledge of nights at Sainsbury's in store, please share!

God no, that's ridiculous. I would be in tears & divorced by day 3!

1vandal2 · 04/07/2021 22:41

You will be absolutely exhausted. Night shift work is a lot of timed for productivity heavy lifting.

milinhas · 04/07/2021 22:41

It’s not just the Monday - Wednesday also looks dreadful. How long would you be planning to do this?

bigbluecup · 04/07/2021 22:41

That Wednesday would kill me - 23 hours straight pretty much as you wouldn’t have time to sleep or even nap really between finishing one job and starting the other. Maybe, MAYBE if there was holiday to take from the NHS job to help out

wjg65ka · 04/07/2021 22:41

No this will be a nightmare

Twilow · 04/07/2021 22:41

That's just ridiculous. How long for?

IncyWincy21 · 04/07/2021 22:42

Your going to end up ill

lockdownwithwhoresdrawers · 04/07/2021 22:43

I will say that I am youngish, and have done nights before (6 years ago). Probably until autumn, December at most.

I do nightshifts and day shifts in a mixture and they are tough going, i would say tho the only day that looks horrendous is the sunday/monday. if this was one of your work from home days
could you start at even 10am or something to give you a bit of a break. Even an hour or so to sleep can make you feel so much better.

lockdownwithwhoresdrawers · 04/07/2021 22:45

My wfh days are quite flex, I could definitely shift them by an hour I should think. I can also sleep in my lunch break without penalty. I get 15 mins and then 30 mins on the night shift for breaks apparently. Will need to sign a working time directive!

OwlinaTree · 04/07/2021 22:45

How will you actually get your day job done on the Monday though? You will have had all weekend with your children, then worked all night Sunday. You are not going to be productive on the day job on Monday. Would your day job bosses be ok with you having worked for 10 hours before starting the day?

You would be better doing Friday or Saturday night, and have Sunday to sleep before day job.

warmfluffytowels · 04/07/2021 22:46

No. You will make yourself very, very unwell.

Lonecatwithkitten · 04/07/2021 22:46

Sunday into Monday and then Wednesday into Thursday are going to be killers and whichever job is the second of the 24 hour period is going to suffer.
I have just stopped working on call overnight mixed with full time in the day having done for 23 years.

Your average sleep will be so low by the time you get the Wednesday evening you will be barely functional. You will eat more as you are chronically tired and you crave carbs.

riotlady · 04/07/2021 22:46

Sorry but no way.

From Sunday to Monday you’d be working 19 hours straight, that’s not accounting for travel time- are you planning on driving?

Wednesday you’ve only got a couple of hours to sleep between heading from a day shift into a night shift- and you will probably struggle to nap at 5pm when you’ve slept normally the night before.

I don’t think you’d be doing a good job at either job, and it’s not worth it for a garden studio.

If you only work 3 days a week why don’t you save money on your child’s full time nursery and drop them down to 3 days?

iusedtoloveopalfruits1 · 04/07/2021 22:46

I will say tho what’s the worst that can happen if you try it for a week or two and it’s not working then you can patch sainsbury’s and try something else. It’s not like you owe them anything.

lockdownwithwhoresdrawers · 04/07/2021 22:46

Sometimes my eldest is away at his dads for the weekend. DH is around all weekend and is perfectly hands on with them. Plenty of time for me to have naps if needed etc.
OP posts:
OwlinaTree · 04/07/2021 22:48

So why not work Saturday/Sunday during the day if your DH is around then?

OhHeyItsSaturday · 04/07/2021 22:48

A neighbour of mine works for them and says they give a warning for any sick days taken, so might be worth taking that into account in case you do get exhausted and ever have to phone in sick (if the warning thing is true, that is!)

Jangle33 · 04/07/2021 22:48

No, that’s unsustainable and not fair on
the kids. How can you “need” a garden studio that much?

MadeOfStarStuff · 04/07/2021 22:49

YABU

Working a night shift then a day shift with no sleep is a recipe for disaster. You’re crazy to even consider it. I also doubt your employer would be happy with that arrangement given the risk to them if you make mistakes

ChocolateCookies123 · 04/07/2021 22:49

Looks awful. I’d go as far as saying impossible. Would either job let you move your hours so that you have sleep time between shifts? Or less hours? Or can you use your annual leave to cut 1 day per week out of the nhs job as it’s short term?
