AIBU to think this is workable?

Well, just about!

Desperately need extra ££ to fund last bits of a house renovation and the extra to cover for a garden studio. I currently work PT in the NHS in an admin position (2 days at home, 1 day in office) but have just been offered a 30hr nights role at Sainsbury's. My week would look like this.
Sunday 9pm-7am
Monday 8-4
Tuesday 8-4
Wednesday 8-4 then 9pm-7am
Thursday 9pm-7am
Friday - off
Saturday off
Sunday 9pm-7am again.

AIBU to think I can cram it all in as a short term solution? My 2 kids are at FT nursery and primary school, wraparound begins in September again so husband/me can drop from 7:30/8am.

Already committed with a deposit to studio and rest of garden has been landscaped around it.

@Starseeking

Sorry accidentally posted before I'd finished.

You'd then do your day job Monday-Wednesday, and night shifts job Thursday to Sunday with Saturdays off, which makes for less to-ing and fro-ing, plus you'll still be able to spend time with the family.

That would still make Monday a really bad day though as it is a full admin shift after a night shift.

OP - the only way it is workable is to do the NHS job Monday to wednesday and then do a thursday, friday, saturday nightshift so you have a full day on sunday to rest for the next week.

@NavigatingAdolescence

Your NHS employer will have to agree this before you do. And I’m 99.9999999% sure they’ll say “absolutely not”.
I'm not working 2 jobs in the same time frame so I'm not sure they would actually. I find working 12 days in a row to be almost illegal morally but it seems to be ok in the NHS!

warmfluffytowels · 04/07/2021 23:11

I'd be very, very surprised if the NHS agreed to this. You'll have a clause in your contract about second jobs so have you actually spoken to your current manager about this?

Notashandyta · 04/07/2021 23:12

When will you see your kids?

Sorry, I think they need more of you than this

lockdownwithwhoresdrawers · 04/07/2021 23:12

@EmmaC78 I think I will ask HR if that pattern is a possibility thank you.

Cant you just get a bank loan?

warmfluffytowels · 04/07/2021 23:12

The time frame doesn't matter though, it's the fact that the second job will have a negative impact on your current job.

Have you not seen the shifts and hours many NHS workers put in? What the OP is suggesting doesn’t look that bad to me.

OP, how good are you are switching off and going straight to sleep when you have the opportunity because that can make a huge difference when you are up all hours and juggling days with nights.

riotlady · 04/07/2021 23:14

DC is in FT nursery due to special needs, I need the 2 days as respite/meeting/paperwork time.

That’s fair enough but you’re not going to be able to do much in the way of meetings and paperwork those days as you’ll need to sleep!

I think this is a recipe for making yourself ill

Recently remortgaged but just need a bit of a top up for some unexpected costs.

12 days is fine under Working Time so long as you get a clear 48 hour break between finishing the last shift and starting the next block. Same across the whole of the EU.

Found a random trust’s policy. Section 2 is very clear.

BrieAndChilli · 04/07/2021 23:16

No it’s not possible.
I did this last year - had my hours at work (admin job) reduced to 10-3 x 4 days a week. So got a night job stacking shelves at Tesco. I lasted 4 weeks, I was bloody knackered and even with an hour or so kip before next job it wasn’t enough.

Ah now I definitely didn't always have that last year as our rostering system doesn't flag it if you are working the shifts in different departments.

As an NHS manager I would not be allowing it.

kurstytemple · 04/07/2021 23:17

God, I've been a student the past 4 years (haven't worked in that time) and that list of working hours has just given me so much anxiety. I would honestly die.

captainprincess · 04/07/2021 23:19

Umm no, not a good idea. I got a second job in Sainsbury's years ago on top of my full time job, my full time job weren't concerned but Sainsbury's asked a lot of questions about my current hours/would I be able to it etc.
I only got a contract for 12 hours, just for some extra money. I did an evening 5-10 and Saturday 11-7, I lasted a year and hated it. I was very young, 21, but found it tiring.

I've checked on our intranet and can't find anything re. Working outside of our contracted/bank work. I'm sure I have seen it somewhere!

Obviously do not want to make myself ill with this. Had a very challenging few years and have only just made it out alive!

Well then you are really being daft.

Even if you somehow survive this, it will have a negative effect on your health & family life.

Secondly, you are being unfair to 2 employers - they won't get anything near your best from you.

Find another way.

Then please don't do this. You will be so exhausted and you'll make yourself sick.
coulditbecominghome · 04/07/2021 23:29

Its not the sum of the hours, it's the working pattern.

I agree. I don't think it's a bad idea to get a 2nd job to supplement but you need a better pattern.

katie2812 · 04/07/2021 23:31

If you think you can do it go for it. But it just looks like you're heading for a massive burnout. Nights aren't easy, they really take it out of you. I understand you want the money, I'm currently trying to save for a house and I'm doing loads of bank but I couldn't mix up days and nights. You need to think of your own mental health and sanity and the tax man!

Hope you raise the funds OP but don't sell your soul for it. 💞
