AIBU to think this is workable?

Well, just about!

Desperately need extra ££ to fund last bits of a house renovation and the extra to cover for a garden studio. I currently work PT in the NHS in an admin position (2 days at home, 1 day in office) but have just been offered a 30hr nights role at Sainsbury's. My week would look like this.
Sunday 9pm-7am
Monday 8-4
Tuesday 8-4
Wednesday 8-4 then 9pm-7am
Thursday 9pm-7am
Friday - off
Saturday off
Sunday 9pm-7am again.

AIBU to think I can cram it all in as a short term solution? My 2 kids are at FT nursery and primary school, wraparound begins in September again so husband/me can drop from 7:30/8am.

I suppose it didn't seem so extreme to me as I am used to people working beyond their hours at work, quite normal to do a 12 hour but have to stay for an emergency etc.

Dh also exhausted by Friday, his work is quite emotionally challenging and accuracy is key. I wouldn't want him to work any more. I do have 2 days in the week off to rest each week after all, although use those to do all admin/life stuff.

Those kind of hours are just not sustainable. You’ll be a zombie.

NoSquirrels · 05/07/2021 07:30

Do you need the £13,000 in a lump sum? How long will it take you to get that?

If you cannot put off the studio (which I assume is the bulk of the cost), can you put off the ‘other bits’?

lockdownwithwhoresdrawers · 05/07/2021 07:31

Need it by December 21, unless I can get the company to put off the build until spring, citing bad weather perhaps?!

You're going to age so badly from sleep deprivation. Can you talk to sainsburys to drop the Mondays?

lockdownwithwhoresdrawers · 05/07/2021 07:32

Other bits need done just for general living quality. We've been in a project house for 7 months and need the additional bathroom doing plus other stuff as it just isn't safe to have materials/equipment lying around. Never mind that it looks dreadful so brings my mood down constantly.

To stay through the night so they get no sleep & start their next day's work? No they don't.

Your posts are a bit frustrating OP.

I get that this is important to you but all the information you provide, including your recent poor health, make this plan insane.

You talk about your DH being exhausted on Fridays. Well, yes, as are you. It's not a small amount of extra work, it's another job. You are one person.

You discuss with DH & see if both of you can take on a certain amount of extra work and adjust your plans for your building work accordingly.

NoSquirrels · 05/07/2021 07:34

I just want to get over the hill with this extra work so I don't have to borrow from friends/PIL or use credit.

You could get a 0% spending credit card, put your usual expenses on there (food, clothes etc) and use the savings to top up. Then you pay off the 0% card at a sensible rate doing bank shifts.

You’ve had a bad few years, you have children with SN, your DH has a taxing job and your main job might be at risk if you find it all too much. I don’t think you should take this job.

Ok, you need a better plan then

Prioritise certain jobs. Focus on those. Delay other projects. You can't do everything at once.

You can only do what you have money & time for. It's the same for everyone.

Have a conversation with them. The upshot may be it costs you a little more, but you’ll have longer to save.

I know it is frustrating living in a building site but your stress levels will be worse if you’re also utterly exhausted.

Jangle33 · 05/07/2021 07:37

You are going to make your DH even more exhausted. The work pattern you are suggesting is insane. You being ill and unable to work at all or look after the kids is the worst outcome of all and a realistic one.

NoSquirrels · 05/07/2021 07:38

To avoid living in a building site:

List out ALL the jobs
Prioritise by urgency (garden studio will be quite low)
Do only urgent stuff
Put all building materials and tools away unless active work is in process.

lockdownwithwhoresdrawers · 05/07/2021 07:39

I suppose material costs have also screwed things up financially, for many of us. This really would be a short term measure though, I don't want to drive myself into the ground and have no qualms about quitting if I can't cope but I am in good health generally. I just had a v stressful few years (can't believe I got through it in one piece kinda vibe) and think I can manage it. It's certainly not unusual for Drs/Surgeons to do over their hours in my trust. Granted they claim money back for the overtime but still.

I think I will speak to them about one of the work patterns listed below/ditching the Sunday night.

I work mostly nights and don't have childcare so often am awake the following day and it is utterly grim. Generally I'm snoozing on the couch with the kids locked in the room with me which is baby proofed. There is no way you could be working during that time. Could you sign on bank as a healthcare support worker and do 1 or 2 nights a week that work for you? Or twilights? (7-12). I often do twilight shifts on top of mine as can get the kids to bed and then have enough of a sleep to be up with them in the morning.
Your plan is unsafe and unfeasible.

Alternatively you need to slow down on the project. Take it a stage at a time.

That sounds miserable all round for your family, what a nightmare for you. Hopefully they get their funded hours soon.

No! DH does nights and the recovery from each batch of shifts is horrendous. You won't be in a fit state to look after children and will probably fall ill fairly quickly.

lockdownwithwhoresdrawers · 05/07/2021 07:52

Definitely could speak to bank about doing a HCSW/HCA role potentially but have had no clinical training at all. Of course have picked up things over the years but still.

I won't be looking after children at all though, but work is almost as demanding!
OP posts:
SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 05/07/2021 07:55

Can you do half of those shifts, for twice the length of time? You do probably have scope to pick up more work but it needs to fit in with your existing obligations better.

monkeyallen44 · 05/07/2021 07:58

Is there any way you could use annual leave on a Monday and Wednesday for a while if this is just a temporary thing? Otherwise I don't see how you'll make it through on such little sleep. I would really struggle and I certainly wouldn't be very productive!

MouldyPotato · 05/07/2021 08:11

Sunday to Monday looks horrendous. Your admin work will suffer. Do they have a 2nd jobs policy?

Wednesday looks doable depending on what the sainsbury's role involves and how much caffeine you can drink/your tolerance for lack of sleep.

Could you increase your hours in your current role? Which pays better?

MouldyPotato · 05/07/2021 08:12

monkeyallen44 that's a good idea but I don't think employer would be impressed if they knew annual leave was for 2nd job

Annual leave can be for anything you wish, presumably! Be it covid insecure swingers events or "hobbies"
