Dogs in Restaurants

IDontGetOutMuch · 04/07/2021 20:05

Took my mum out to lunch today. It was a nice enough place-£25 per head.
Have expectations changed with regard to dogs in restaurants? There were four other tables in our section and three had a dog with them.
Two of them barked at least three times during the meal. One jumped up at a waitress carrying puddings to another table, paws on her apron. One jumped up at the table wanting to be fed. One was petted by another waitress who then went straight to a table to take orders without washing hands. One was lying in the way so that I had to ask the owner to move it to allow my mother to get through with her Walker.
We had a dog when I was a child. He never went to a restaurant. What about people with allergies?
Is it okay that they do? Do I need to get over myself? I tried to compare to children. I expect my children to cause no disturbance to others at a restaurant and to stay at the table. We expected this even when they were little and actually rarely went to restaurants anyway.

@TheFoundations

And given that more places ban dogs than not, by your logic, maybe YOUR opinion isn't relevant

The opinion that you're arguing against is that there should be some dog friendly places, and some places that do not allow dogs, so that everybody has somewhere they can go. By which logic, the law, the current situation, and most people you come across in daily life all concur.

There's no wonder you feel you're banging your head against a brick wall. You're not even clear what you're arguing against.

I said from the start I avoid dog friendly places but think establishments need to make it clear to people before they turn up.

What I've been arguing against is places like shops and doctors surgeries or post offices that people have no choice but to use, suddenly becoming dog friendly and the notion that I believe YOU agreed with, that their dog's rights to be in those places should trump mine.

TheFoundations · 06/07/2021 15:23

Nobody has queried that you don't like dogs. Nobody has queried your right to not like dogs. You have invented that.

You don't seem to know what 'onus' means...

Still banging your head against that same old brick wall...

@TheFoundations

I just love it when people make things up on MN

You've been repeatedly misquoting several people all day long! Half of what you've said has come out of thin air.

No it hasn't.

I can't be arsed scrolling back but people have repeatedly compared dogs to children, states their dog's rights trump a human being's rights and that people with allergies and fears don't matter enough that anything should be done about it. One person - I can't remember who - was even horrified that as a comparison peanuts would be taken off a plane to accommodate for peanut allergy sufferers.

It's all there. I have made nothing up

LST · 06/07/2021 15:24

If I owned a shop and wanted to make it dog friendly I would. Like lots of the independent shops in my town. A small minority of people thinking I shouldn't wouldn't stop me.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 15:25

So what if people do hate dogs anyway. What's that to anyone else?

I'm mostly indifferent to dogs, I dislike annoying ones. I find it amusing that this amounts to "hate" with some people Grin

And that's your call. Contrary to some people on here's beliefs I wouldn't try to stop you.

However if you did that you might want to account for badly behaved dogs and accept that while you would of course attract customers many would also vote with their feet. Such is the nature of any business decision

I'm not sure any of us take our dogs to the doctors or post office anyway so you could well be arguing with yourself 😆. To be fair if I passed a post office with a big sign saying dog friendly and I needed something I might well go in as it's advertised as ok. As it happens our local post office manager isn't even very human friendly so I avoid going if at all possible. I can't say I know anyone who takes their dog to their smear test or whatever though. Mine would probably bark at a dr doing that. Bad idea 😆

Onus; something that is one's duty or responsibility

Pardon me for thinking your dog was your responsibility and bringing it in somewhere others might be, you are responsible for it 🤣

@vivainsomnia

What opinions am i trying to make fact? That dogs matter more than humans.

That dogs have no place in restaurants.

That my wishes are less important than yours because mine involves a dog.

Just about everything really!

Dogs don't matter more than humans

I have been clear me thinking they shouldn't be in restaurants is my opinion it fact

My point is just because you have a dog it doesn't make your wishes more important than mine. My point is if you bring something "extra" into a situation you are expecting special treatment, and I am not..

So I have not tried to cHaNge OPinIoN iNTo FaCt (yes I'll use "teen speak" as you call it because I don't give a stuff if you don't like it). Please stop making things up

I've never even mentioned the rights of dogs. You putting words in people's mouths at every turn. This thread isn't about doctor's surgeries (where dogs are not allowed other than assistance dogs) It's not about Post Offices (where a dog owner or dog loather could wait outside out of respect for the other, if necessary) It's about restaurants and pubs.

Anyway. It doesn't matter what I think or what you think. Argue against the business owners, argue against the laws, or just go to Wetherspoons. I wouldn't touch a Wetherspoons with a barge pole, so you'll be protected from vile people like me. My dog and I will be in the quaint little family run pub on the canal, sharing a bag of cheese and onion, and I won't be arguing with anybody because I choose to patronise businesses that are in line with my values.

Enjoy your conflict!

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop I really think you should read this thread again when you’re not so het up.

Fuck no, once is enough.

I think people claiming "no one ever said that" should re-read the thread though

LizzieW1969 · 06/07/2021 15:37

^Quite. I don’t even have a dog, and I’ve never seen such a thing as a dog friendly post office or GP surgery. (I’m inclined to agree that both these would be ridiculous.(

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 15:39

@TheFoundations why has it descended to classism now? But LOL that you think cheese and onion crisps in somewhere 'quaint' is something to aspire to 🤣 I'd probably eat in Wetherspoons because it's quick, good for kids, dog free and also I'm not stuck up 🤷‍♀️

I didn't raise the issues of post offices either, someone else did and my posts objecting to dogs in all spaces were part of that conversation. Again, look back on the thread if you don't believe me.

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/07/2021 15:41

My dogs used to love going for steak and chips Grin

vivainsomnia · 06/07/2021 15:44

I imagine you'd say the onus for bringing children into places is on he parents? Or are dogs and their owners speshul and different?
You are clearly not getting what I'm saying. Parents bringing their kids is absolutely fine. There is no onus on anyone. They don't owe me not to being them. My issue with not liking them is not their problem. I don't expect it to be.

I might say something to family with kids who are very disturbing. I would do the same to a family with a very disturbing dog.

No you don't - your many posts really struggle to accept this
I do. What I do t accept is to punish myself when I'm doing nothing wrong just because you find it u fair to have to stick to restaurants that don't allow dogs.

You really are the one lacking tolerance, not me.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 15:46

Confused of course it is!

It's up to me when I take my kids out to not let them behave like disruptive docks who upset people, or to ensure they don't go into adult only areas (some pubs round here still have these).

TheFoundations · 06/07/2021 15:46

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

Okey dokey. As I said, you enjoy your conflict. Doesn't make any difference to me what you think, or how you think I or anybody else should behave. Each to their own. Your opinion makes no difference to anything, and nor does mine. I'm just lucky that the authorities and most people I meet in daily life agree with me, and that there are some nice places I can take my lovely little dog.

Nobody has mentioned class except you. I prefer supporting local businesses, not chains, so I don't like Wetherspoons. Enjoy yourself there, though.

TheFoundations · 06/07/2021 15:48

Mine's the same - tries to drag me into every pub we walk past. Bad influence!
FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 15:51

@TheFoundations I have no conflict at all, you've made the at bit up. I too will go about life happily after this thread. It's called expressing an opinion. Expressing one doesn't mean I love my life plagued by this particular grievance. I'm simply using an Internet forum for its purpose. As I said earlier, I am not here to start a protest, just chipping in my two pence worth, same as you

SillyLittleBiscuit · 06/07/2021 16:01

My dog is obsessed with the pub at the top of the road. His 5pm walk consists of him trying to persuade us to get a pint. Mostly because the staff give him sausages. I love that he’s welcomed. Really mistreated for most of his life so I’m glad he can enjoy his senior years. 🤷🏻‍♀️

OKey dokey. Yup, you're doing everything right and are clearly conflict free. Enjoy Wetherspoons!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 16:13

I will. Enjoy your dog hair soup.

Yeah, it's good to be able to offer him such luxury. I'm sure he appreciates it.

I knew a little Yorkshire Terrier once, 18 years old, he was. Someone left the front door open by accident, and he went missing. We looked EVERYWHERE for him, got in a right panic, you know, 8 inches tall, nearly blind, frail... obviously something awful must have happened.

He was found in the pub 4 doors down. He was sitting on a bar stool next to some old bloke who'd bought him a bag of crisps and half a pint of ale. He'd never looked happier Grin

SillyLittleBiscuit · 06/07/2021 16:16

I can just picture that scene now @TheFoundations 🤣
