Dogs in Restaurants

IDontGetOutMuch · 04/07/2021 20:05

Took my mum out to lunch today. It was a nice enough place-£25 per head.
Have expectations changed with regard to dogs in restaurants? There were four other tables in our section and three had a dog with them.
Two of them barked at least three times during the meal. One jumped up at a waitress carrying puddings to another table, paws on her apron. One jumped up at the table wanting to be fed. One was petted by another waitress who then went straight to a table to take orders without washing hands. One was lying in the way so that I had to ask the owner to move it to allow my mother to get through with her Walker.
We had a dog when I was a child. He never went to a restaurant. What about people with allergies?
Is it okay that they do? Do I need to get over myself? I tried to compare to children. I expect my children to cause no disturbance to others at a restaurant and to stay at the table. We expected this even when they were little and actually rarely went to restaurants anyway.

@vivainsomnia

Humans are higher in the pecking order than dogs And who is higher than you on tou pecking order? Do you systematically make way for them, just because they are higher there?
No one - humans are equal. Dogs aren't equal to humans. The end.

I've said it often enough are you really not understanding or does the concept upset you so much that you refuse to accept it?

Lockheart · 06/07/2021 13:54

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop didn't you say you were going to disengage about 10 posts ago?

LST · 06/07/2021 13:55

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop He goes to pubs alllll the time. He sleeps. That is what he does. Or he gets fusses and treats from people who want to interact with him. He is in a place where dogs are allowed and out of the hundreds of times we have taken him out with us he has never bothered anyone. Unless they silently seethed in a corner because I dared take my dog in a dog friendly place

Good point, yes I did!

claralara42 · 06/07/2021 13:57

Don't you think the business owner should have the final say, regardless of the disruption? And then customers decide whether to go there based on whether or not they like dogs/bouncing/mayonnaise-based-vision-impairment?

No, they can't decide to squirt may in your eyes, can they? Because that's assault and its illegal, and they don't trump the law because they own the premises. Same with trampolines, they can't change the floor of their pub to trampolines if they felt like it, because that would be dangerous and stupid and they wouldn't have insurance for when literally everyone hurt themselves.
Business owners CAN'T just do as they please, and you know it. As far as I am concerned, it should be the same with animals. Not allowed, even if business owner wants them. SAme as trampoline floors and mayo in the eyes (could you have picked stupider and and less useful to your point examples?)

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 14:08

For more the bottom line is:
If I had my way no dogs would ever be in restaurants. But this is real life and that's not how it works. Some restaurants are dog friendly and so I will find somewhere else. All I ask is that they clearly advertise it and tell people when booking either online or in person.

And in places of 'need' - shops, POs, doctors surgeries - animals (except service animals) shouldn't be allowed at all. For reasons many have stated.

But owners are allowed to allow dogs. So it doesn't actually matter if you care or not does it. As the owner obviously doesn't care if people care they allow dogs... Or.. they wouldn't allow them and they do.
TheFoundations · 06/07/2021 14:20

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

You are saying and inferring things that are not true, even just on this thread. Nobody, anywhere on the thread, has said that a dog's rights trump a human's rights. Nobody has dismissed the needs of those who don't want to/can't be around dogs. You are inferring that all dogs drool and/or misbehave. You've said that @vivainsomnia is probably the manager of a particular restaurant, and is narcissistic. You think people are saying that children and dogs are the same. You are calling people idiots. You have said that our people should not be around your people. These things are divisive, and not indicative of a fair, empathic stance that considers everybody's viewpoint. It considers only your own viewpoint. If you are considering the viewpoint of anybody else other than those who want what you want, that's not coming across at all.

This is the point of the dog people here: There should be eateries and drinkeries where dogs are allowed, and there should be eateries and drinkeries where dogs are not allowed.

You are catered for, we are catered for. Nobody goes without all places, everybody goes without some places. You have a right to your viewpoint, we have a right to ours.

You keep saying you're going to disengage but you don't. You say this is wasting your time but it isn't. You are responsible for how your time is spent. You are the one wasting it. Don't go in the pubs you don't like. Don't spend time on the threads you don't like.

But start taking responsibility for yourself rather than expecting the world to meet all your needs for you.

Since you are incapable of reading, I will say it again. I know they are allowed to allow dogs. I don't think they should be. That is called An Opinion, which is the point of AIBU.
Still confused?

BobMortimersPetOwl · 06/07/2021 14:26

@MachiaNelly

One child is frighten after being bitten and my other is allergic

Mine too. It makes me wonder, people who claim dogs are part of the family if their child developed a sudden and intense allergy to said dog, which one would have to go? Hard to choose between beloved family members then. Or is it?

My 2 dogs are very much part of my family. I don't have children, and if any of my friends or family members announced their child was allergic to dogs I'd kindly suggest they don't bring said child to my home, and would respectfully not take my dogs to theirs.

Right, so, you respect the law, then.

Good. The law says that if I want to go in a pub with my dog, that's ok, as long as the pub owner is happy with that.

If you don't like the law... well, what difference does that make? I think it's silly driving at 20mph past a school. Who cares about my opinion? Nobody! Because it's a popular law. So I just have to suck it up. Lots of people don't like lots of laws. They still have to abide by them.

My cat walks on a lead, because she won’t go out without me. Wonder what would happen if I wanted to take my cat to a restaurant? Probably not, right?

I hate how dogs are considered THE companion pet and allowed almost everywhere. I don‘t like dogs.

I can't see why not. I know if I asked at a few pubs we go to my cat would be allowed. My kids wouldn't be though. I don't kick off about that or think they should be either.
vivainsomnia · 06/07/2021 14:36

so not only are you repulsed by children but women enjoying themselves
Well yes, I hate excessive noise. I hate dogs that bark too though, is that better?

Proves my point how crazy dog people are not fit to be around humans
This says so much more about you than me. I might not like loud beings, but I accept they are part of normal life, toy on the other hand seem to have very little tolerance for anyone who doesn't see things as you do.

Might cause havoc with some of the dogs - which will be prioritised as more people wish to bring dogs to pubs than cats. So better business sense to do so
vivainsomnia · 06/07/2021 14:47

So why do you rhin you are on a higher pecking order than me? I bring my dog, she doesn't come and ask for a table herself. Bringing her meets my wishes. Why are tours more important if we are equal?

rantymcrantface66 · 06/07/2021 14:48

I've just been through McDonald's drive thru with my dog in the passenger seat - because you can't take dogs in McDonald's, which is fine. The woman gave my dog a portion of chicken nuggets free because she's was so cute 😆. People tend to like dogs! More often than they don't

claralara42 · 06/07/2021 14:48

I hope you don't think I was quoting you here, viva. I tagged you because some of those things were said about you.

I think you and I are in agreement about the topic of the thread. Along with most of the rest of the population.

I can imagine. As it goes, mine loves cats. They might not love her so much though!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 14:49

I didn't realise you were a dog! I didn't know dogs could post on MN.

You're a human. We are all equal. Your DH is not. Simple. And whilst you may see your dog as an extension of you, it isn't. It's something you've brought along that doesn't need to be there.
