AIBU to ignore the notification?

This morning I woke to find a notification on the NHS app telling me I'd been in contact with someone with Covid and need to isolate for 8 days. The only place that can have come from is a farm cafe on Thursday, out for lunch with DH, who does not have the app so has not been told to isolate so isn't going to. He's manager of a large pharmacy and they're on skeleton staff already and have been encouraged to delete app by big bosses. I'm a childminder so will be letting down parents if I close. I've had a pcr test this morning and I'm double vaccinated. The app says to isolate even if its negative as I could still develop covid. But seriously, what's the point of having had 2 vaccines if I'm still going to have to isolate?! But I am usually a stickler for the rules and worry about getting "caught." What do I do?

OP posts:

If I was one of your families, I would definitely want to know so that I don't leave my DC with someone who is meant to be isolating

randomkey123 · 04/07/2021 18:28

MN isn't the place to ask - Covid hysteria is still alive and well on here.

I've never downloaded the app, OP, for this very reason.

Track and trace is a whole different ball game, however.

MrsFin · 04/07/2021 18:29

DD is in a similar situation. She works in a branch of a bank, but she's following the instructions.
NOT following the rules could have consequences worse than the inconvenience of following them.

RedHelenB · 04/07/2021 18:30

I think as a childminder especially, you need to abide by the rules and isolate.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/07/2021 18:30
@Doifollowrule as a parent who uses a childminder I would be very very annoyed if she took this attitude. Just because a person is vaccinated doesn't mean they cannot catch and spread it to everyone else including the children they are looking after. Every person getting infected is another opportunity for this stupid virus to develop another mutation that at some point will render the vaccines totally useless. In your position you owe it to your childminding parents to tell them what you are doing so they can make a choice for their own children and families.
What if your CM didnt have the app?

BillyIsMyBunny · 04/07/2021 18:30

I would follow it on this occasion but then delete the app to stop it from happening again.

Kayjay2018 · 04/07/2021 18:36

I'm speaking in this scenario where someone has received the notification so has been, at some point, close enough to trigger the notification and is suggesting deliberately ignoring that. If you don't know then you are not in the same circumstance and there isnt a choice to make. For me the issue is about choosing to ignore that when you are in a role looking after children (or any caring profession really).

I'd feel angry if someone had been notified to isolate, chose to ignore that and impacted my family, without me having a choice to keep my child away.

I bet the OP would feel terrible if she did have it and pass it onto any of the children in her care after knowingly not isolating.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 04/07/2021 18:36

Ignore it. If it was me I would isolate purely so I could WFH and get a bit of a break.

Lovemusic33 · 04/07/2021 18:40

Delete the app. I don’t understand why people have it when they plan on ignoring it anyway?

I’m double vaccinated and hardly go anywhere, I have deleted the app because I don’t want to be scared to eat out or go to public places.

Belledan1 · 04/07/2021 18:40

I got a text ages ago a week after I been at the place a week before and when I called 119 and was told it was 10 days from the day you were there so we only did 3. My husband frontline and as he had his weekly test and negative he cld work. Both me and family members tested negative too . They told me track and trace not enforceable.

SmilingHappyBeaver · 04/07/2021 18:41

@Doifollowrule as a parent who uses a childminder I would be very very annoyed if she took this attitude. As a working parent who uses a childminder, I would be livid if my healthy, symptomless double vaccinated CM decided to self isolate. Complete madness. Ignore the notification, keep the app so you can "log in" to venues to pacify the covid mafia, but turn track and trace off from within the app.

To all the people moaning about the risk of mutations, presumably that can happen anytime with normal flu... or are people newly paranoid about that too?

We all just need to wash our hands regularly, get jabbed, and get on with life. Those too scared to venture out need to stay at home and let everyone else get on with keeping the country and economy running.

MrsPinkCock · 04/07/2021 18:41

I’d ignore it. I switched contact tracing odd months ago.

DH and his entire workforce had to isolate because one person has Covid who was on the premises for two hours. Another employee hadn’t even seen the guy, let alone been near him, and had to isolate. Someone else came in for an hours meeting in a different part of the building and had to isolate. It’s madness.

I’d feel differently if you’d actually knowingly been in contact with a Covid case and would 100% isolate in that situation, but if you didn’t have the app, you wouldn’t be told to isolate, so what’s the difference if you ignore it Confused

HideousKinky · 04/07/2021 18:43

My DD returned 5 days ago from a work trip to USA. This morning someone from NHS knocked on her door to check that she was isolating as required. She was told they might check on her again in the next few days

Bhappy12 · 04/07/2021 18:44

I hope you're not my childminder.....

MrsWombat · 04/07/2021 18:47

Could it be one of your mindee's parents?

sweeneytoddsrazor · 04/07/2021 18:48

Imo its a waste of time. Partner was out
Tues with 4 friends. 2 of the 5 have pinged from track and trace, the other 3 haven't. Both the 2 that pinged have tested positive one has developed symptoms one hasn't. Partner did a lateral flow test anyway which has come back negative but even so still hasn't been told to isolate.

warmfluffytowels · 04/07/2021 18:48

There's no legal obligation to isolate from the app alone - it's only if Test and Trace call you.

I don't have the app but if I were you, I'd just delete and ignore.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/07/2021 18:50

@Bhappy12

I hope you're not my childminder.....
Have you told your CM she needs to download and use the NHS app?
igelkott2021 · 04/07/2021 18:51

@actorbynight

You have to isolate.
No, the OP does not.

Why have people got contact tracing switched on? It's utterly pointless.

Sexlife · 04/07/2021 18:51

I don’t do track and trace

igelkott2021 · 04/07/2021 18:51

@HideousKinky

My DD returned 5 days ago from a work trip to USA. This morning someone from NHS knocked on her door to check that she was isolating as required. She was told they might check on her again in the next few days
that is completely different from being pinged by the app
igelkott2021 · 04/07/2021 18:53

@RedHelenB

I think as a childminder especially, you need to abide by the rules and isolate.
Yes IF you are contacted by test and trace.

The app is not mandatory, because it's pointless. I could be sitting in my garden office with someone working in my neighbour's garden on the other side of the fence. And I would be pinged if they had it and notified, even though I'd had no contact with them.

redsky21 · 04/07/2021 18:53

I got pinged, the day of supposed contact I hadn't been out or had anyone to the house. I ignored it.

warmfluffytowels · 04/07/2021 18:53

@HideousKinky

My DD returned 5 days ago from a work trip to USA. This morning someone from NHS knocked on her door to check that she was isolating as required. She was told they might check on her again in the next few days
But that's because quarantining upon return from the US is a legal requirement.

There is no such requirement to isolate if the app pings you.

warmfluffytowels · 04/07/2021 18:54

@Bhappy12

I hope you're not my childminder.....
Why?

OP wouldn't be doing anything wrong. There is no legal requirement to isolate due to the app.
