@Peregrina

Portillo in his time as an MP was a loathsome character, but he did rather redeem himself when he lost his seat and accepted with good grace. Somehow I can't see this the current crowd being gracious if the same ever happens to them.
It’s interesting how Portillo has reinvented himself and turned into the cuddly uncle who wears mad clothes and loves trains. He turned the corner for me when he took over for a single parent for a week and had to budget on her money, he left saying he had no idea how she managed. Shame he didn’t do it when he was an MP.
Mumsnut · 04/07/2021 10:05

I thought the Sundays would be full of revelations, but nada..

OhWhyNot · 04/07/2021 10:15

Well the media will at times protect each other

I suspect that is why we are not seeing any revelations they shall be hinted at but their will certainly be more empathy towards because she is journalist

Odisia · 04/07/2021 11:20

There was an article in today's Times. No revelations, but I thought the article was more sympathetic to Sarah Vine.

the80sweregreat · 04/07/2021 11:41

Only looked online today at the mail. Still going on about Harry and Meghan though : ' he is going back to his wife' as if that's news.
Causing more hassle with all that.
They are obsessed by it

For your own mental health, please stop reading The Fail, no good will ever come of it. 😉
the80sweregreat · 04/07/2021 13:15

Blossom, I know!
I do read the guardian and other news items too. I like to see what the enemy are up to though.
I am finding their obsession with H and M a bit worrying though. I know this thread isn't about them .

lop124 · 04/07/2021 13:20

Confess that I read the Mail because it's free, easy to read on the app and I like some of the more light hearted articles. That said, I have a free mind so I don't agree with everything they write and I also like reading the Guardian, Independent, the Sun and the FT. For me, it's not the devil's work, it's a paper at one end of the political spectrum, as some are at the other.

Na. If there is stuff then this weekend wouldn't be the one to sell newspapers with.

You'd save it for a Sunday when England hadn't won the night before.

If we make the final next weekend, no one will run any dirt on anyone next Sunday.

But the weekend after looks quiet. The following Monday is 'Freedom Day' so yeah back to some mud slinging.

The Press are there to make money. Why waste your best stories on a day when you've already got venue generating content?

JayniSummers · 04/07/2021 14:28

@Mumsnut

I wonder if he's going to do a Philip Schofield?
My guess too, it's a man ( apparently)
longwayoff · 04/07/2021 14:31

I bought a Daily Mail on my way to my first day of work 50 years ago. Seemed ok to me. My mother cast her eye upon it when I arrived home "get that fascist rag out of this house immediately", followed by a brief history lesson about its support for Moseley's thugs. It's not improved since.

My dad used to read it. I used to pick it up with tongs, which amused both of us.

the80sweregreat · 04/07/2021 14:41

My dad only ever bought the Mirror and in laws the sun.. different people and views there!

OhWhyNot · 04/07/2021 14:43

I’m not a fan of the Daily Mail

But unfortunately it won’t be until the DM get behind, which they have started to, women and the nonsense that we are having to deal with regarding self ID and keeping spaces safe for women that this issue will be more mainstream

We can sneer all we like but they are the most influential paper/media outlet by far

SpindleWhorl · 04/07/2021 14:58

I look at all the free news websites every day. It's interesting to compare them. CNN vs Fox is a hoot.

justasking111 · 05/07/2021 12:17

Diane Abbott it's worrying. Like her or not she has always been sincere and fought for people. I really hope that her family are looking out for her.

order-order.com/2021/07/05/diane-abbott-stumbled-through-friday-night-interview/

RickiTarr · 05/07/2021 15:47

Yes she’s well known for being a powerhouse of a constituency MP @justasking111

That’s quite a sensational, unsympathetic link, though.

It’s no secret that she has a chronic health condition and also that she has had extreme stress in her personal life in the last year or two.

The problem is, I’m guessing, that the nature of her job, and especially the relentlessness of constituency demands, makes it difficult for her to take recuperation time. I really feel for her.

Sylvan92 · 05/07/2021 17:15

I’m not a massive fan of Diane Abbott but I do feel sorry for her with everything she’s gone through with her son. I don’t think stress is particularly helpful for diabetics.

TotorosCatBus · 05/07/2021 17:39

It's hard to understand the hatred towards DA when there are male MPs who have done worse or said things that were more stupid, hypocritical or contraversial.

longwayoff · 05/07/2021 18:00

Quite. As far as I can see, the most shocking thing DA has done is sleep with Jeremy Corbyn. Two single, young people have sex with one another. Shock Horror. And she got a bit muddled while unwell. And is the mother of a seriously unwell son. Oh, and she's a black woman in possession of the letters MP after her name. Terrible. Stone her.

Cam22 · 05/07/2021 18:04

Bad enough Hancock can get some person interested in him. Surely Gove will fail if he tries.

RickiTarr · 05/07/2021 18:13

I’ve just noticed that DA’s son’s sentencing must have been subject to reporting restrictions. Not a trace anywhere, despite the extensive coverage of the charges and trial. He entered a guilty a plea to some of the charges, sentencing was set for April 2020, then silence.

So we don’t know what the continuing ramifications of that for DA nor James A-T. There was mental illness involved, so he wasn’t without mitigating factors, but that’s potentially a complex ongoing situation.

A lot to bear for a single mother approaching 70 of an only child.

Maybe she is waiting until she has achieved 35 years in Parliament (soon, maybe next year?) to stand down and concentrate on passion projects.

RickiTarr · 05/07/2021 18:15

Agree. She’s very clearly been ill in contrast to her previously very sharp, very together self. It’s not comparable to make MPs just being generally useless as their baseline behaviour. Anyone using it as a reason for “hatred” has another agenda.
RickiTarr · 05/07/2021 18:16

MALE MPs^ (not all of them - the comparators).
