I just watched Michael Portillo, flanked by Alan Johnson and Andrew Neill, tear into her for say nasty things about Ed Milliband’s wife. Good for him.

Who's her?

What makes you say that with such vehemence? I actually feel that the vitriol directed against Abbott is disturbing end disproportionate...I think that is backed up by the statistics on which MP sadly receives the most abuse. Actually, for BME women, whether you agree with her or not, Diane Abbott has achieved something important and I feel uncomfortable with how people constantly single her out and denigrate her intelligence and morality.

Agree - she seems to be someone that people find easy to denigrate, and I don't know why.

She's no worse than most other MP's (hardly an accolade, I know) and much better than many of them.

I agree, I respect her greatly as do her constituents. She really cares about them and her life has not been at all easy in recent years, yet she keeps going. I've never had reason to call on my MP but if I was in difficulties and my MP was Ms Abbott, I would call on her in a jiffy.

I wondered the same.

Abbott slept with Corbyn a century ago, really who cares the youthful things we do shouldn't haunt us. No-one talks about Major and Currie these days

herecomesthsun · 03/07/2021 15:38

@ancientgran It seems to me that we only saw part of the video.

First, we saw a still.

Then, we saw 60 seconds.

Someone has the rest of the video.

I think, if he hadn't gone, they would have released a bit more, by stages, till he resigned.

Very effective. And got a lot of interest as journalism.

I also wonder whether there were 2 or more cameras, as the shots were so well positioned.

And I agree, very convenient to have a new anti-lockdown health minister and very handy to have MH to blame for having wanted lockdowns.

I note also the surprise wedding of BJ just a month ago, before all this began.

Fascinating.

Petronella Wyatt said this week Boris can't sack anyone for bonking because he'd have to sack himself. That's funny

@Blossomtoes,but shes not just sharing her experience is she? If I have coffee with a friend and we chat about MH and I say I'm worried about anti depressants, that's sharing an experience.
If a journalist writes a balanced, well researched piece on his/her thoughts on anti depressants that's sharing an experience with a wider audience

Vine using inflammatory language and faulty research is at best irresponsible.

I assumed that the wedding was so that Carrie could attend the Summit as Boris’ wife.

Yes, she is. The only difference between you telling a friend and Sarah Vine writing about her experience is the size of the audience. I can’t believe I’m defending her, the world’s a very bizarre place right now.

ApplyWithin · 03/07/2021 16:12

Well Ed Milliband's wife, Justine, has the last laugh. She's now a High Court judge, while SV still writes for the DM. I can't imagine that's the height of anyone's career ambitions.

Exactly.

When I found out about J Corbyn and D Abbott's relationship, I had a vision of 'spitting image' figures of them, sitting in bed reading political articles and discussing them. Luck and Flaw would have had a field day!

Yes, who cares.

Oh it was her. I didn't see the programme. It's ridiculous to have a dig at someone like Justine and even worse that it comes from another woman.

He pales into insignificance compared to say John Hamm or Terry Wogan

In answer to your question, yes there is Frances McDormand. Fantastic actress and Oscar winner. However, it’s very telling that she doesn’t appear on the Hollywood walk of fame despite being an Oscar winner. There are loads of new additions of actors I wouldn’t say are as accomplished and talented as Frances .....

Eg. Benedict Cumberbatch, Zac Efron, Shia LaBeouf, Courteney Cox, Laura Linney, Sarah Paulson

So yeah, normal looking women in showbiz get overlooked[/quote]
I agree with every single name on your list except Laura Linney! She is one of the top 3 actresses of this time, if not the too! Hands off Laura L!
