I’m fortunate to live a 15 minute drive from a big sandy beach.
Today was hot so after work I went straight to the beach to swim .( it was freezing )

I’m really sad about the experience.

The beach was full of out of control barking dogs, children literally screaming at the top of their voices for no reason ( yes, it’s a theme of mine ) , but the saddest thing of all was the place was strewn with litter.

Plastic bottles, empty crisp bags, discarded takeaways, fag ends, empty drink cans ....
There were loads of bins around . Not that you need a bin to not litter.

I’m genuinely upset by this. Is this considered ok now ? What can be done about it if anything ? I’m properly upset.

Organise a local litter picking group?

Atalune · 29/06/2021 20:05

Sounds like a very popular spot, can you find a less busy and more discrete place?

lughnasadh · 29/06/2021 20:05

The council will presumably pick up the rubbish (they are super efficient here).

If children can't shriek at the beach, where can they?

Dogs...I'm not keen, but no one died.

Surely you can find a quiet spot, being a local?

PumpkinKlNG · 29/06/2021 20:05

Clean it?

ablutiions · 29/06/2021 20:09

My god what is wrong with these posters OP?

Of course it's shit that people are unnecessarily loud and inconsiderate with no regard for the environment.

I'm with you.

Take you Fucking litter hone. Why should we have to pay to clean up after them? Lazy bastards.

KB921 · 29/06/2021 20:11

Totally get your point about the litter, there's no excuse but I think during the summer dogs and children are to be expected. I live on the coast there are some beaches with a dog ban and some with no ban. So if you don't like dogs go to a dog ban beach. As for the kids, what do you expect them to do? Be silent?? Maybe some of them haven't seen the coast before and got a bit excited.

If you're local find the quieter spots, visit at quieter times!! The beaches will be quiet again in a few months!!

LawnFever · 29/06/2021 20:13

@PumpkinKlNG

Clean it?
Don’t be ridiculous, people should take their litter home, really scummy to leave rubbish all over the place, shouldn’t need anyone else to clean it up.
Livingintheclouds · 29/06/2021 20:14

Dogs should be controlled but kids surely need the freedom to run and shout. Litter is something else - our local beaches are cleaned every morning, though there isn't that much of a litter problem.

Peacelillyhippy · 29/06/2021 20:15

I live in an area that people cluster to at the weekends. The rubbish is disgusting. We have both sea and forest - amazing!

But I fucking hate walking the dog in the morning and finding bras, underpants, used toilet paper stained both yellow and brown, used tampons, fast-food wrappers, dirty blankets, beer cans, smashed glass, olive oil bottles (?!). Absolutely disgusting.

I take photos and send them to the council. Also I do pick some rubbish myself - depending on my mood, the type of rubbish and its location. (I won't bother by the bins, but will in the woods where the rubbish collectors won't go and it really upsets me.)

PumpkinKlNG · 29/06/2021 20:15

Well they do it round here, they organise litter picking groups and they go all over the area cleaning, rather than just sitting at home complaining about it...

Litter being the councils job is such a lazy attitude, if people just took it home if wouldn’t cost the councils £££ and they’d have budget for more useful things.

But they shouldn’t need to.
AprilAzpilicueta · 29/06/2021 20:17

Agree the litter is disgusting, and I would always choose a dog-free beach over one with dogs.

YABU about kids making a noise though. They're enjoying themselves at the beach, it's not a library.

colincarrot · 29/06/2021 20:18

Is this uk.,because I was really cold today. dogs should be restricted and people should take their crap home

saveforthat · 29/06/2021 20:18

Yes I agree op. I live close to a beach and I am constantly in a rage about the litter. I do my best to pick some up but people are lazy and disgusting. We have many visitors because it's so beautiful here, why would you want it to be spoilt by litter and dog shit.

Heronwatcher · 29/06/2021 20:19

Litter yes, agreed. Everything else totally normal and to be expected on a beach.

Why should locals pay higher community charge to pick up litter for tourists?

Do children actually need to shriek?

Juststopasking · 29/06/2021 20:23

God forbid children have fun on a public beach.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/06/2021 20:23

I’m with you on litter but seriously leave children alone- it’s not a restaurant or a museum or even a supermarket- its outside!

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/06/2021 20:24

@PumpkinKlNG

But why the fuck should they have to? Why can’t people just take their litter with them?
BrilliantBetty · 29/06/2021 20:25

Seriously. How can you begrudge kids having a fun, exciting time at the beach?

megletthesecond · 29/06/2021 20:27

Start litter picking. It rubs off on other people. I used to litter pick right under the nose of our drug dealers and customers and they got the message and started using the bin.

I keep a second itter picker on my car so I can have a quick whizz round when we're at the beach.

LagunaBubbles · 29/06/2021 20:27

You do realise the UK is quite a large landmass and not just where you stay? Hmm
I'm in Glasgow and it's been hot and an unbelievable 27 degrees today for example.

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/06/2021 20:27

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

And it’s still shared space. Children playing, shouting, running around, squealing when the cold water hits them is one thing, but persistently screaming really isn’t necessary
TheBobJog · 29/06/2021 20:29

Littering is disgusting and anti social, but dogs have been barking and children have been shrieking for centuries. Think you need to get over that one.
