I’m fortunate to live a 15 minute drive from a big sandy beach.
Today was hot so after work I went straight to the beach to swim .( it was freezing )

I’m really sad about the experience.

The beach was full of out of control barking dogs, children literally screaming at the top of their voices for no reason ( yes, it’s a theme of mine ) , but the saddest thing of all was the place was strewn with litter.

Plastic bottles, empty crisp bags, discarded takeaways, fag ends, empty drink cans ....
There were loads of bins around . Not that you need a bin to not litter.

I’m genuinely upset by this. Is this considered ok now ? What can be done about it if anything ? I’m properly upset.

No you are not unreasonable.

Litter (in particular) is a bugbear to mine, too. There is no excuse. At all.

I work as a support assistant in a school and if I see any child throw a wrapper away I confront them and ask them to pick it up and put it in on of the many bins in the playground (often a few feet away). Baffled me that they don't do it (to be fair, many do but as usual it is the minority who spoil it for everyone else).

I see it as a lazy, selfish disrespectful and thoughtless act.

bluewanda · 01/07/2021 07:52

I was driving down a country road yesterday and someone in the car in front of me chucked a couple of empty crisp packets out of their window. I despair.

SaltAndVinegarSandwiches · 01/07/2021 07:58

@bluewanda

Nothing gives me the rage more than that. It's usually bloody Mcdonalds packaging. They'll be the first against the wall when I take over the world.

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

Two little girls screaming- I’m sure they didn’t carry on for hours get a grip- if you want silence May I suggest a remote mountain walk next time!
So many on here can’t understand that most people tolerate children making noise, but there’s no need for the constant screaming that so many indulge in. OP isn’t asking for silence, just a bit of thought that beaches are for everyone to enjoy.
ShortBacknSides · 01/07/2021 08:28

I agree.

Children screaming makes me very anxious - which is absolutely natural. We are programmed to react instinctively to what sounds like a person in distress.

I can remember my mother being very angry if we screamed loudly or urgently for no reason. She explained - and it’s common sense, really - that screaming was for when we really were in trouble and needed help urgently.

Boy who cried wolf comes to mind.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 01/07/2021 08:33

litter is appalling, last time i went in the sea, brr, there were two ice cream containers, such selfish behaviour to leave crap on the beach.
out of control dogs also annoying.
screaming children, admittedly annoying if they are not your own.

was this after school?

RMNMummy · 01/07/2021 09:45

YABU about the children and the dogs. The beach is for fun for some, and for relaxation for others.

Whether you recognise it or not, living by a beach means you are extremely privileged. Go on a less busy day, IMO.

YANBU about the litter, absolutely disgusting people! I hate littering it’s disgusting behaviour.

stellaisabella · 01/07/2021 09:52

If kids can't run around and enjoy themselves on a beach, when can they?
Although apparently according to mumsnet, they should be seen and not heard.
I'll go for the rest of your post, but that's just ridiculous.

why do you believe running around and enjoying themselves means screaming like a Banshee?

Sounds like the opposite, if kids must screech and scream with parents ignoring them, there has to be a problem in their home, it's not normal.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/07/2021 10:03

While the noise is ok not ok really depending on what it is, I can't believe that first answers are simply "clean it". People should be outraged about the fact that half the bloody population doesn't understand that litter goes in a bin. Not just on beaches. My family member visitited and pointed out how schocked they were at the amount of litter in cities.

Tigertigertigertiger · 01/07/2021 12:16

Bloody hell this has kicked off.

I’m not carping on about children having fun on a beach

I have 4 children of my own . I have never ever allowed them to scream their heads off in public. Or in the house . Or in anyone else’s house.

It’s not difficult . It’s in the same category as not letting them punch each other. They try it once and you intervene . They try it a few more times and you intervene and say no each time.
So they stop. It’s called being a responsible parent , not a killjoy .

You think it’s ok to let your kids scream at the top of their voice in public “ for fun” ? You are a moron and a public nuisance . You can be high spirited an have the best fun ever and not scream. Most of us manage this just fine and are taught it at an early age .

Actually same with training dogs but it seems the world is now full of fuckwit dog owners who have not trained their dogs properly who give the good dog owners a bad name.

Litter droppers are the scum of the earth and the whole litter issue seems to be getting worse and upsets me every day .

@WeirdArchitecture:

“ But fucking dogs.
I love dogs, essentially, but the UK has become a shit show of entitlement with them. WTF lent them such god like status? Everywhere I go it's dogs, endless barking and fucking dog shit everywhere. Twats.”
Brilliantly put .

AsTrueAsADogsLove · 01/07/2021 12:26

I agree with all of your last post OP. I have 5 DC and am a retired infant teacher. Screaming is not at all necessary for children to have fun. And if they do scream, you stop them.
I think the standard of parenting matches the standard of dog training for many these days, sadly.

kindaclassy · 01/07/2021 12:26

Mind you, I do sympathise with kids if they are screaming because they ended up in dog shit or in a pile of rubbish.

Shell4429 · 01/07/2021 12:43

If dogs are on a beach where are they relieving themselves? That would be the thing I was worried about.

Nonsense

Absolutely no-one has said children shouldn't have fun

It's just that some parents actually parent

Ridiculous

I also agree with OP. My DCs infant headmistress, (1980s), did not allow screaming in the playground.
MarchXX · 01/07/2021 17:58

Schools are full of 'those' kids who have never been told 'no' at home. They struggle to cope with this little word on a daily basis at school but most eventually cotton on to the fact that they have to accept it (at school, anyway).

I suspect some parents are afraid to discipline their kids in case they have a tantrum (because they want to be their friend), so its easier to give in and (over) indulge them, same with their dogs. Anything for the easiest. Their little darlings (kids and dogs) can indulge in all sorts of anti-social and selfish behaviours in a public space and parents will be sitting glued to their phones.

Only on mumsnet can you have someone, @RMNMummy, accusing you of being privileged to live near a beach Shock.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 01/07/2021 18:59

indeed @RMNMummy, have you been to Hastings? Wink

Macncheeseballs · 01/07/2021 19:20

Litter and kids screaming are two very different beasts, I think after the year we've had I'd forgive a kid going mental on a beach

lazylinguist · 01/07/2021 20:05

Ultimately, like it or not people will leave rubbish. They shouldn't but they will and I'm not sure why children are getting the blame for it when people of all classes and ages drop litter -- even nice middle class mumsnetters.

Umm no. Nice people of any class do not drop litter. If they do, they're not nice.

YANBU at all about the litter, OP. YABU about the children. And YANBU about poorly-behaved dogs and there being lots of them. I have a dog, and I am careful to keep him under control on the beach, but it's practically a full time job for the duration of the beach visit. It's actually one of the very few times I wish I didn't have one tbh!

itsgettingwierd · 01/07/2021 20:11

@PumpkinKlNG

Well they do it round here, they organise litter picking groups and they go all over the area cleaning, rather than just sitting at home complaining about it...
But why should they have to?

People shouldn't spend all day enjoying a beach and littering it and waiting for others to tidy up after them.

Notenoughchocolateomg · 01/07/2021 20:27

It's horrible OP. My local park is the same, the children litter constantly. They can be stood a foot from the bin and they still drop it straight on the floor. It drives me crazy. I ask politely and explain we shouldn't litter but half the kids just stare at me like I have 2 heads. I often walk round cleaning it up. I shouldn't have to but its so upsetting to see. My youngest is 6 and has additional needs and he knows to use a bin ffs, because I've bloody well taught him to.
