I’m fortunate to live a 15 minute drive from a big sandy beach.
Today was hot so after work I went straight to the beach to swim .( it was freezing )

I’m really sad about the experience.

The beach was full of out of control barking dogs, children literally screaming at the top of their voices for no reason ( yes, it’s a theme of mine ) , but the saddest thing of all was the place was strewn with litter.

Plastic bottles, empty crisp bags, discarded takeaways, fag ends, empty drink cans ....
There were loads of bins around . Not that you need a bin to not litter.

I’m genuinely upset by this. Is this considered ok now ? What can be done about it if anything ? I’m properly upset.

You’re being ridiculous about the children being noisy on the beach, and if the beach is as big as you say move away from them- couldn’t have been that busy on a weekday?

I’m with you on dogs not being kept under control though. I love dogs but I really don’t resent owners cheerfully telling me “it’s ok, he’s friendly!” As their dog jumps up, runs across my stuff or is generally pain.

Littering is disgusting and there’s no excuse for it- take it home with you ffs. A friend of my partner’s visited from Sweden a few years ago for the first time and was shocked at a) the litter everywhere in this country and b) that it didn’t shock us or really massively upset us at all. He had a point. It pisses me off but I’m used to it. Which is bad.

GreyhoundG1rl · 29/06/2021 22:02

I can't believe op is upset at the amount of shite scummy bastards leave behind on a beach and some bright spark suggests she CLEAN IT!!
What is fucking wrong with people?!
I presume that poster is part of the problem. Someone else can clean my crap if it bothers them, it doesn't bother me so why should I?
Arseholes.

AntiWorkBrigade · 29/06/2021 22:05

@Mykittensmittens - oh yes, “go and live in the middle of nowhere”. The go-to response of a certain kind of poster to any neighbour noise thread (along with “just use noise cancelling headphones”).

A lot like the idea that if people don’t like litter they should pick it up themselves.

No. How about we all treat each other and our environment with respect rather than expecting people who don’t like noise and rubbish to adapt their behaviour.

me4real · 29/06/2021 22:05

Litter picking groups are very trendy and a good way to get a bit of exercise. My mum and sis are into it.

Baycitystroller · 29/06/2021 22:07

Don’t get why people travel to a beauty spot just to trash it. YANBU.

@quizqueen

The human race is generally a piece of shit, I can't wait for us to blow each other up so the next species can become dominant. I really mean this. We have had enough time on this planet to become decent and have failed miserably. We are cruel to animals which share this space with us and cruel to each other. We have messed about with nature big time, cutting down the rain forest, polluting the sea and the skies and the ground and now we want to colonise other worlds and do the same again. Good riddance to the human race forever, I say, and make it as soon as possible.
Wow, it’s not often I come across someone as misanthropic as me! I agree with you on all counts. Most humans are revolting wastes of space whose deleterious presence the planet would be better without.

@GreyhoundG1rl What's the alternative, assuming none of us here are the litterers particularly? Yes in theory people are fined, but how often does that happen? And councils are pretty crap and tend to only keep on top of the showy bit of city centres, or tourist attractions.

OhDear2200 · 29/06/2021 22:10

The level of little in this country appals me. Who are these people who think it’s ok to litter? I don’t know anyone who would think it’s ok.

It’s something that genuinely makes me get the rage.

And yes I could litter pick, but why? It’s really not that hard to not litter. Is everyone did not litter there would be no litter!!!!

QueenBee52 · 29/06/2021 22:10

picking up your own litter and carrying to the bins is great exercise too 🤣

Macncheeseballs · 29/06/2021 22:11

I don't get why any one leaves litter anywhere including next to over flowing bins, just take it home with you, some people are dirty bastards!

@SupermanInk

Bananalanacake

Denmark is the country we should aspire to be like in terms of their attitude to the environment. Beautiful country.

Maybe But they keep their pigs in such inhumane conditions.
OhDear2200 · 29/06/2021 22:12

Though you are being super unreasonable about the children being loud. Come on they are cooped up at school all day!

I’m afraid I have to agree. 😞

LibertyMole · 29/06/2021 22:12

Are there no dog free beaches where you live?

Most popular beaches don’t allow dogs.

NotFrozen · 29/06/2021 22:13

OP this upsets me so much too.

Litter picking by volunteers is not the solution because those responsible will continue to cause harm. They need to be caught and fined, and there need to be noisy public campaigns against it. This should be taught in schools. The culture of littering in the UK is disgraceful but it can be changed.

itsamegladon · 29/06/2021 22:13

I'm with you op.
Went to our family favourite holiday beach in Half term.
My and dd were the only ones on the whole beach. Then a group from the PGA place turned up with 15-20 teens. They climbed over from one beach onto ours landing right on our stuff. The 'leaders' decided to plop down where they landed.
I mean the whole beach was empty and they sat on top of the only other people on it.
I mean on top as well - my towel had shoe prints.

I was not a happy bunny!

Bloodypunkrockers · 29/06/2021 22:14

@aiwblam

Have the council definitely supplied a lot of bins? When people are struggling with kids, dogs and beach kit, it’s easy to see why they might leave their litter behind (although totally unacceptable).
And yet they managed to bring it all with them
NotFrozen · 29/06/2021 22:14

What is wrong with these mumsnet weirdos saying you shouldn’t complain about the litter but instead should go out and clean up the mess caused by others?

ThursdayLastWeek · 29/06/2021 22:15

If my kids were having a genuine screaming contest on a beach I’d tell them to be quiet. Bloody hell, I don’t want to hear that, no way would I subject anyone else to it.

But then I also keep my dog on the lead and take my litter home with me.

NotFrozen · 29/06/2021 22:15

I also don’t blame lack of bins. If there is no bin then I take my rubbish home with me. Regardless of how much I have to carry or how many children or pets I am dealing with.

LibertyMole · 29/06/2021 22:16

‘No. How about we all treat each other and our environment with respect rather than expecting people who don’t like noise and rubbish to adapt their behaviour.’

But this is never going to happen is it? Just like we are never going to live in a society with no crime. There is always going to be a proportion of people who are arseholes, a proportion of people who do more than their fair share to make society better and a bunch of people in the middle.

ThursdayLastWeek · 29/06/2021 22:16

Also around here the council have very little to do with some beaches, a lot of them are National Trust and long lengths of coast are supervised by one ranger.

SupermanInk · 29/06/2021 22:17

Maybe But they keep their pigs in such inhumane conditions.

Yeah, I know. 😔 Britain does at least have ‘better’ animal welfare standards than most countries. I’m vegan. 2 meat eaters in my household and only British meat allowed in my house.

makinganavalon · 29/06/2021 22:17

I think denying children shrieking on a beach after the year they've had is frankly absurd
