40,000 Fans and No Masks

Watching the football. Yes, I like the football.

But WTF, no masks (literally not one mask) and hugging and kissing like it’s a San Francisco in 1980.

This pandemic is over then? My kids aren’t being sent home from school again, I can spend time sitting with my grandmother at home? I know I will be told ‘life has to go on as normal’. I think I have lost my mind - I just don’t understand anymore.

and before anyone comes and says "it was outdoors" , look at those pictures, hugging, singing, shouting all in very close proximity, if someone had the virus acting like that it would spread. How can that be behaviour be safer than a double vaccinated person visiting another double vaccinated person in a hospital, where I'm assuming the majority of staff have also been double vaccinated. You can see why people are questioning it.
**@TheRosesOfSuccess* @MrsFezziwig* it’s not about reading it off MN it’s about knowing the rules as I read the news, a family member is an undertaker and that I have been to a few funerals the past couple of years all of which only allowed a maximum of 30 people 15 or 16 of which were allowed inside depending on venue size.
It only changed a few days ago that they could allow more people depending on the venue size but there is still a limit that the individual places set.
It’s quite strange that you would openly post on a thread that there’s no limit when a quick read of the rules (or common sense) would tell you that there has been a max. limit set since Covid started like every other venue Confused
You are getting mixed up. Or you haven't read what you posted. The snippet you linked to actually says that prior to June 21st, the number of attendees at a funeral was determined by how many people the venue can safely accommodate with social distancing measures in place, not 16.

The limit which was lifted in May was 30. It wasn't 16 then, it wasn't it isn't now. And I said: Actually there are no limits on numbers for either, as long as social distancing is possible so please don't claim I'd said something else

Football fanaticism and culture is a disease in this country. England doing well in the Euros is the worst Possible outcome in a pandemic.

If the school charges a lot of money for the leaving ‘do, Covid will stay away and everyone can mix freely

It's got to change.
Rosebel · 30/06/2021 10:28

We all know the real reason why football is allowed now and other things aren't. Unfortunately after the last 15 months or so we actually do need to concentrate on what brings in money.
Mind you watching everyone hugging and singing last night made me think only one thing.... lockdown. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

The government have been banking on the feel good factor. England winning the Euros at Wembley is a further poll boost.

LadyCatStark · 30/06/2021 10:31

I’m happy for the football fans to do so as long as the rest of us can get back to normal too!

I dunno about it being a disease but they way they’re banging on on the TV about how important it is and how “it’ll lift the spirits of the nation” is ridiculous!

🤣 I think we should all stick to croquet and real tennis.
GingerAndTheBiscuits · 30/06/2021 11:02

@LeSquigh the group games and last night (and any remaining matches at Wembley) are all part of the govt’s Event Research Programme. They are test events (the quality of that “test” being open to debate!)

Yes - fully agree! Sensible approach. However, myself and 40,000 of my fellow croquet fans love to hit the booze and jump around kissing and hugging each other mask-less every time we see a nice Aspinall Peel ;)

@minmooch

@Taliskerskye my Dad is in a Care Home, bed bound and has dementia. I am only allowed one visit a week. I have to turn up at 3.30 to do the lft wait 30 mins and then have an hour with him. Can only arrange a visit Monday to Friday. I can't leave work 2 hours early each week. I'm not sure how many care homes actually allow 2 visits a day. I shall be glad when they are able to relax visiting a bit as I'd like to visit my Dad more often.

My cousin is in the same position. Her 95year mum with dementia that she has cared for for over 11 years is in a care home in London thanks to being unable to visit her in hospital and advocate for her treatment.
Now she too gets a half hour visit a week
Both are double jabbed and here’s the kicker they have to sit facing each other behind a Perspex screen
My aunt is losing the ability to speak and a much needed hug from the daughter she lives with all heart is vital.
The other kicker is it’s costing the family £6k a month for this.

Thiscantreallybehappening · 30/06/2021 11:32

@shewalkslikerihanna

My friend's DF was rushed into hospital, he was very confused and disorientated. My friend wasn't allowed to visit him. The hospital said absolutely no visitors, not just one member of the family was allowed to comfort him.

My friend is double jabbed, her DF double jabbed, I'm assuming hospital staff all double jabbed.

How can those scenes last night be safer than double jabbed family members seeing other family members?

They can't dress these events up as "test" events to measure the spread of the virus when they don't require a post event test or it is voluntary to do one.

I understand they need to think of the economy and give people things to look forward to but really if they are going to let these events go on with the inevitable street parties etc that follow them they need to ease the rest of the restrictions.

Thiscantreallybehappening · 30/06/2021 11:37

and I really hope the case rises don't lead to another variant coming along that derails another school year.

TheRosesOfSuccess · 30/06/2021 11:43

The hospital visiting issue is entirely unconnected with the football though. One is an outdoor event at half capacity requiring testing/vaccination, socially distanced seating, a controlled entry and exit, and people well enough to be out and about.

Hospitals are a very different scenario unfortunately. FWIW, visiting is being allowed at many hospitals now. One of my DC was in hospital back in April (large teaching hospital) and was allowed 2 named visitors. Hospitals are making their own decisions and some of them are getting it very wrong. Compassion seems to be in short supply, particularly with very sick patients.

You saw the pictures last night (and in the media this morning) and you honestly claim there was "socially distanced seating" amongst the 40,000 last night? Honestly?

The stadium wasn't full BUT where the crowds were there wasn't a lot of social distancing going on. As for controlled entry and exit - I don't know about the entry but all I saw on the news was crowds coming out of the stadium, it didn't look like a controlled exit to me.

Everyone goes on about "it's outside", the way those crowds were shouting, singing etc in close proximity the Delta variant would spread.

I don't disagree, I think we need to get back to normal but you can understand why people are fed up. How can one member of a family visiting one person in hospital when they are double jabbed not be allowed to happen and yet we can see those scenes last night. I take on board that some hospitals are allowing visitors. It isn't just hospitals though: dentists, doctors, schools. IMO I need every day to function normally.

Thiscantreallybehappening · 30/06/2021 11:53

WeAreTheHeroes · 30/06/2021 11:55

According to the govt website www.gov.uk/government/news/final-euros-games-at-wembley-to-host-larger-crowds-in-extension-of-events-research-programme they're all test events.

Thiscantreallybehappening · 30/06/2021 11:59

@WeAreTheHeroes

Have you read the guidelines? there is no requirement for people attending to do a post event PCR/LFT tests so how can they be test events? how can they monitor the spread of the virus? Exactly what data are they getting from these events?

Read Stephen Reicher twitter, it is interesting.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/06/2021 12:17

I don't begrudge the football fans, but I do begrudge how I'm still waiting to get back to parkrun and proper running races. How is participating in sport apparently more hazardous than exuberant fans in a position where they can randomly hug and kiss each other?

While races have been permitted on and off since the autumn, the reality is that they are such small scale trail races with none of the motivating atmosphere of a proper race and so socially distanced that you may as well keep your money and keep running solo.

How is it more dangerous for parents to watch sportsday than thousands of fans to congregate in Wembly?
Enough. Drop the stupid, diviscive rules and let people make their own choices.
