I thought I had a forgotten about tampon “lost” within me, Googled and apparently it can’t get lost.

Husband tried to remove it (was really romantic 😳) and I eventually removed it except it wasn’t a tampon, I have accidentally removed my Mirena 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈.

I am waiting for 111 to call me back, I feel like such an idiot🙈🙈.

Honestly I think that is how IUD's are removed

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHaands · 28/06/2021 22:23

"We" accidentally removed one of my Mirenas without even knowing. It was due for removal anyway.. was waiting for my appointment for a new one. We'd been a bit... adventurous and enthusiastic.. Blush one night.. next day I was going about my business and DP text me and said "if I send you a picture of something will you promise not to freak out??" Shock

All kinds when through my head while I waited for that picture to load on my rather uncooperative WhatsApp.

I never felt it go!!! Have refused going to consider how much of a bucket crutch that makes me!

Went along to my appointment the following week and proudly declared I'd done half their job for them Smile Fortunately they didn't ask for details...

Cockadoodles · 28/06/2021 23:29

I felt nothing when having mine removed too. As long as the strings are there you can pull it out

Welshmaenad · 28/06/2021 23:58

I took mine out on purpose to ttc DC2.

Couldn't get an appt at the clinic for weeks. Obviously I don't recommend this as such, but I did t injure myself! Was pregnant within 3 months, he's 11 now 😂

I've also done the cornea thing🙈 A question though - I'm in Ireland & maybe it's different in the UK but a lot of posters saying 'the gp didnt want my coil removed?' Wtf? If you request it surely they have to remove it??

DeflatedGinDrinker · 29/06/2021 00:39

Omg 😱😱😱😱😱

Sorry Cherryripe1 . I'd missed your post until immediately after posting mine. I did immediately put up another post correcting that as I saw yours. My apologies, I'm fairly new to mumsnet and not very sure how to copy posts. I've tried to do it now but not sure I have. On a more serious note it's worrying that so few people are aware of the risks of not removing tampons.

Yeah, but lots of GPs will tell you you have to keep it in for six weeks more/another few months etc to let it settle (save themselves the job of removing it). My DM had her GP tell her her last one would never come out- she'd just be fine to leave it in there forever. Wouldn't book her an appointment to remove it.

You have to be quite firm and know your rights sometimes to get them taken out. And, during COVID, lots of places were just giving a blanket, 'No,' response in case they caught COVID from your vagina or something, IDK.

I think people know but forget. Although, given how many people had them in for weeks at a time, it does look like it's not as much of a certainty as that little tampon leaflet would have you believe.
CherryRipe1 · 29/06/2021 07:31

supperlover**It does seem so given the anecdotal evidence on here. I did actually leave one in unbeknown to me for God knows how long as it was during perimenopause & periods were scant. This horrid dead mouse like object plopped out one day whilst on the loo & freaked me out until I twigged. It absolutely reeked too.

CherryRipe1 · 29/06/2021 07:32

Sorry that reply was meant for RugratMum too!

@Onynx you have to be politely persistent and possibly even forceful in this sort if situation, it seems.

Weirdly I also had to go to bat FOR my copper coil. My then GP always following my lead and feelings on BC and agreed and referred me happily, especially my horror story from using the pill and my stated refusal to use hormonal bc ever again. The family planning clinic nurse heard this but was adamant that I should get a mirena. She tried to book me in for the mirena and not the copper- stating my age and the fact I hadn't had a baby so the copper would hurt and be unsuitable for my needs. Happy to be corrected but the two coils look mighty similar in size to me?

I stuck firm and eventually she gave in agreed. Short while later when it was being fitted, I asked them to confirm at the last minute- legs spread, speculum in- that the little device on the table, ready to roll, wasn't a mirena. It was. It was not inserted! This was 2013 but felt like the 60s. And it didn't feel accidental.

My IUD went in fine, stayed in fine and came out late but just fine in summer 2020. The lovely nurse who removed it debunked all the lies I'd been told at insertion, and was amazed I'd had to argue my case for one on those grounds.

Biancadelrioisback · 29/06/2021 11:56

@supperlover

Nobody seems to have mentioned Toxic Shock Syndrome. If you haven't heard of it look it up. If you're going to use tampons be careful not to leave them inserted for too long.
I think most people have heard of it, most schools and doctors drill it into us from a young age, and people don't lose or forget about tampons for fun... But shit happens! And I know way more people who've forgotten about a tampon for days than I do people who've had TSS.
BaronessOfTheNorth · 29/06/2021 12:12

The cornea was because I was 21, drunk, got home, fell asleep and woke up in my clothes and make up still on (my hair was perfect, remarkably). I thought I had left my lenses in because everything looked great (it was just because I was still drunk). I ended up in A&E / ophthalmology all day and had to use antibiotic drops.

To be fair, I'd done such a job of removing the cornea, the ophthalmologist carried on trying to lift it. That was quite painful, more so than laser eye surgery 😩

I've never got anything lost up my vagina, thank heavens. Although I'm aware there is still time.

Merryweather80 · 29/06/2021 12:32

I used to use a diaphragm as contraception a few years ago. I say used to, because somehow it split inside after an amorous evening. The main part came out fine but it took me and my boyfriend at the time quite a while to locate the rest.

It was like doing a jigsaw puzzle with diaphragm pieces 😳
I have also pinched the surface of my eye trying to remove a contact lens. I had a lovely blood blister for weeks.

CryptoFascist · 01/07/2021 19:41

@FlaminEckVera yes it is! I've had this username for years and nobody's mentioned it until now, thank you!

OP I've loved this thread, hope you managed to get a replacement
