Two songs I heard today....

Me and Mrs Jones

Me and Mrs. Jones
We got a thing, goin' on
We both know that it's wrong
But it's much too strong
To let it go now
We meet every day at the same cafe
Six-thirty and no one knows she'll be there
Holding hands, making all kinds of plans
While the juke box plays our favorite songs

So.....ignoring the kids, no sex and pretending that her old man has no clue what is going on...dont sound like much of an affair to me!

Do Wa Diddy

There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'
Snappin' her fingers and shufflin' her feet, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'

I'm thinking more severe MH issues than an attractive hip young thing?!

Any more that I have missed?

The lyrics are still inappropriate as hell

Bbq1 · 26/06/2021 22:48

I agree with previous pp's. Songwriters and musicians are creatives and many songs aren't meant to be taken literally, are ironic or have a much deeper meaning than on the surface. There are some songs that are just nasty though like that vile R Stones somebody mentioned upthread.

I think Sex On The Beach, Horny and Shaggy with "Wasn't Me" are a bit grim though. Shaggy's seen by his girlfriend having sex with his neighbour on every available surface in the house but is denying it all! All of those songs are just SO annoyingly catchy though!

UnderperformingSeal · 26/06/2021 23:03

The blister is on her hand, though...? Anyway, it's always seemed to me that Noel Gallacher's lyric-writing method is something like:

  1. Think of two words that rhyme
  2. Think of some more words that make the lines scan
  3. If the result is anywhere within 90 degrees of making sense, that's a bonus.
Ellpellwood · 26/06/2021 23:35

The blister is on her hand, though...?

Yes... she's been a busy lady!

I still don't understand why "Are we dancer?" came from the quote "America is raising a generation of dancers." Plural. Just use an s, Brandon.

I love a nonsense song. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a great example.

UnderperformingSeal · 26/06/2021 23:55

Oh, right, I see now... Maybe she should have changed hands so it felt like someone else was doing it

MissJeanLouise · 27/06/2021 00:02

The two that spring to mind -
Fat bottomed girls by Queen:
I was just a skinny lad
Never knew no good from bad
But I knew love before I left my nursery
Left alone with big fat Fanny
She was such a naughty nanny
Hey big woman, you made a bad boy out of me.
Then also ‘Hard to say I’m sorry’ by Chicago:
The woman is trying to break up, but he won’t let her (couldn’t stand to be kept away from her body apparently), and he needs her to her to feel sorry for him because him having to apologise is so difficult for him.

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/06/2021 00:02

@UnderperformingSeal

Oh, right, I see now... Maybe she should have changed hands so it felt like someone else was doing it
Yeah but that just means it takes three times as long and isnt as good.......or that might just be the case when someone else does it for me (or not) :o

Thought of another

Last Request by Paolo Nutini

"I know you are dumping me but shag me anyway....I know you dont want to but I'm going to keep going on at you until you do even though its coercion"

Same as "We've got tonight" same sentiment, different (but not much) lyrics

@CandyLeBonBon

Any Duran Duran lyrics for me!

I mean I love them dearly but most of Simon le Bon's songwriting is pretentious wank! 😂

The reflex is a lonely child, who's waiting by the park
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover, isn't that bizarre?
And every little thing the reflex does
Leaves you answered with a question mark

I love them but god knows he writes nonsense!

That's so funny 😂

My sister and I (we're 50 & 58) have been saying this for decades!
She always says, "God made him pretty because he surely can't write songs!" The worst part is that dear ol' Simon takes it all so seriously.

VienneseWhirligig · 27/06/2021 00:19

I really like this song, it's catchy, but it does not make any sense whatsoever to me.

The song is Cannibal Surf Babe by Marillion, and the strangest lyrics by far are:

And she looked like she'd had sex
With a Tyrannosaurus Rex

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/06/2021 00:20

What I love about The Riddle by Nik Kershaw is that most of the lyrics were made up crap just to suit the tune he was writing. Then when he came to write the lyrics he kept most of them in which is why it makes no sense! At least he was up front about it :o

OP posts:
Iamthewombat · 27/06/2021 00:57

Nick Kershaw said in an interview that he still gets letters from people who think that they have divined a deep meaning from the lyrics of The Riddle and he hasn’t the heart to tell them that it was a deliberate load of bobbins!

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/06/2021 01:01

I read that too! Was a MASSIVE NK fan in the day, my first album was Human Racing so I followed him for years!

SuperSecretSquirrels · 27/06/2021 01:18

@Belleager

Are we human, or are we dancers? Hmm
Dancer.

I always assumed it was a reference to Nietzsche’s Human, All Too Human.

Particularly because of the singular “dancer”, and the “close your eyes, clear your heart, cut the chord” reference.

RikkiTikkiTavvi · 27/06/2021 01:20

Life by Des’ree has some of the most ridiculous lyrics I’ve heard.

I'm afraid of the dark,
Especially when I'm in a park
And there's no-one else around,
Oh, I get the shivers
I don't want to see a ghost,
It's a sight that I fear most
I'd rather have a piece of toast
And watch the evening news

malificent7 · 27/06/2021 01:34

Well in " fast car" we don't know why they had to " get outta here." Hence plot hole.

UnderperformingSeal · 27/06/2021 01:44

She wants to escape a shitty dead-end life. No plot hole at all, it's obvious.
Stigsmother · 27/06/2021 01:50

Up The Junction is a masterpiece, admittly with quite a lot of clunky lyrics.
BUT...all is forgiven for
"The devil came and took me
From bar to street to bookie"
Genius.

Stigsmother · 27/06/2021 01:57

True
"With a thrill in my head,
And a pill on my tongue"
Explains quite a lot about that song Grin

Changechangychange · 27/06/2021 01:57

@SusannahMartin

I took her in for coffee and I gave the dog a bone (!)
Yeah that’s just a pretty grim and insulting slang term for fucking somebody. Boning somebody who is a bit of a dog. It’s fairly self-explanatory isn’t it?
Stigsmother · 27/06/2021 02:09

Cyberghost

Sister/blister.......that's what I always thought too

Stigsmother · 27/06/2021 02:20

Offramphilton

Yes!!
Also,
"Have a drink,
Have a drive,
Go out and see what you can find"

Vile.

Stigsmother · 27/06/2021 02:23

Lust for life

"Have you had it in the ear before?"

HeechulOppa · 27/06/2021 03:03

My take on Do They Know It’s Christmas and the ‘and tonight thank God it’s them instead of you’ line is that it’s not meant to mean ‘tonight thank your lucky stars you’re not a poor starving African’. I always thought it meant ‘tonight Thankfully we’re going to be thinking about (and raising money for) the poor starving Africans, instead of you guys only every thinking about yourselves.’ I.e. tonight it’s all about them instead of you, and the ‘thank God’ being a throwaway expression like ‘thank goodness.’

‘Tonight - thank God - it’s THEM instead of you.’

Still patronising as hell though.

Anystarinthesky · 27/06/2021 04:45

When I was young I thought The Strangler's ' Golden Brown' was about getting a sun tan! I didn't really listen to the lyrics! Someone told me years later it was to do with drugs.
