Two songs I heard today....

Me and Mrs Jones

Me and Mrs. Jones
We got a thing, goin' on
We both know that it's wrong
But it's much too strong
To let it go now
We meet every day at the same cafe
Six-thirty and no one knows she'll be there
Holding hands, making all kinds of plans
While the juke box plays our favorite songs

So.....ignoring the kids, no sex and pretending that her old man has no clue what is going on...dont sound like much of an affair to me!

Do Wa Diddy

There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'
Snappin' her fingers and shufflin' her feet, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'

I'm thinking more severe MH issues than an attractive hip young thing?!

Any more that I have missed?

@LonelinessIsACloakYouWear

Plot holes in Fast Car? Maybe she meant pot holes.
🤣🤣

What about whaddaya wanna make those eyes at me for
If they don't mean what they say
They make me mad, they make me sad, they make me want a lotta things that I've never had
You're fooling around with me now
Lead me on and then you run away
Well that's alright, I'll get you alone tonight
And maybe you'll find, you're messing with dynamite

Rather rapey!

Cushionsnotpillows · 26/06/2021 15:37

@Octopuscake great explanation, and yes that last verse is so sad.

OffRampHilton · 26/06/2021 15:41

If her daddy’s rich,
Take her out for a meal.
If her daddy’s poor,
Just do what you feel.

Always gave me the ick.

bonbonours · 26/06/2021 15:47

@Belleager

Are we human, or are we dancers? Hmm
This line annoys me so much. It's not even "dancers." It's "are we human, or are we dancer" what the hell does that mean??
happycamper3 · 26/06/2021 16:01

Not so much that Jagger didn't think the lyrics through but just imagine this being released today..

Stray cat blue by the Rolling Stones :

I hear the click-clack of your feet on the stairs
I know you're no scare-eyed honey
There'll be a feast if you just come upstairs
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
I can see that you're fifteen years old
No I don't want your I.D.
And I've seen that you're so far from home
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
Oh yeah, don'tcha scratch like that
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
Bet your mama don't know you scream like that
I bet your mother don't know you can spit like that.
You look so weird and you're so far from home
But you don't really miss your mother
Don't look so scared I'm no mad-brained bear
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
Oh, yeah
Woo!
I bet your mama don't know that you scratch like that
I bet she don't know you can bite like that
You say you got a friend, that she's wilder than you
Why don't you bring her upstairs
If she's so wild then she can join in too
It's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
Oh yeah, don'tcha scratch like that
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
I bet you mama don't know you can bite like that
I'll bet she never saw you scratch my back

Birdhouse in your soul:

I'm your only friend
I'm not your only friend
But I'm a little glowing friend
But really I'm not actually your friend
But I am

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
Who watches over you
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
Not to put too fine a point on it
Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul

I have a secret to tell
From my electrical well
It's a simple message and I'm leaving out the whistles and bells
So the room must listen to me
Filibuster vigilantly
My name is blue canary one note* spelled l-i-t-e
My story's infinite
Like the Longines Symphonette it doesn't rest

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
Who watches over you
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
Not to put too fine a point on it
Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul

I'm your only friend
I'm not your only friend
But I'm a little glowing friend
But really I'm not actually your friend
But I am

There's a picture opposite me
Of my primitive ancestry
Which stood on rocky shores and kept the beaches shipwreck free
Though I respect that a lot
I'd be fired if that were my job
After killing Jason off and countless screaming Argonauts
Bluebird of friendliness
Like guardian angels its always near

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
Who watches over you
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
Not to put too fine a point on it
Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
(And while you're at it
Keep the nightlight on inside the
Birdhouse in your soul)
Not to put too fine a point on it
Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch (and while you're at it)
Who watches over you (keep the nightlight on inside the)
Make a little birdhouse in your soul (birdhouse in your soul)
Not to put too fine a point on it
Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch (and while you're at it)
Who watches over you (keep the nightlight on inside the)
Make a little birdhouse in your soul (birdhouse in your soul)
Not to put too fine a point on it
Say I'm the only bee in your bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul

God-forsaken?!

How did no one in the whole process not go 'err... Do you not mean God-given?....'

@Octopuscake

Fast car is so beautiful, partly because of the way the song handles the use of time. The verse/chorus structure undercuts the singer, who is an "unreliable narrator". She tells us her hopes for life, but the driving force of the song structure itself gives us a different and sadder expectation of what will happen to her. We know it better than she does, which is the absolute killer.

The song has the device that each verse tells a different bit of her story; childhood, deciding to leave, to the start of it all going wrong as he stays out late, etc. Then the chorus takes us to the one moment that matters to her, the moment that feels to her like a decisive pivot.

But we know culturally and subconsciously that verses typically carry us along a story and choruses are just moments of high emotion, so the song shows us how a life is actually built. As we live, we feel life is built through single powerful moments in time, or through our decisions (which feel like the perfect moment of acceleration). But actually life is a long journey of many verses and you can get on a track which quickly leads you to a bad end (like a fast car taking you inevitably to your destination). We don't need to hear everything that happens to her to know where she's going.

At the end of the song we have been taken on an accelerated ride through her whole life, and we stop- just as the cycle starts to repeat. The lyrics are incredibly clever and poignant.

There's also the thing that the tonic note musically is repeated pretty much always, most chords have the inversion so it's a ?G I think?? so the song has the illusion of musical progress but never gets there.

Sorry! I do this too much :)

I could have done with the explination about 6 months ago - when DS took from his music lesson which used this song that it was a song about a woman going for a drive Hmm.

I think I finally got through to him on a basic level it's a song about hopes and aspirations being dashed or unfulfilled and how there a wistful looking about on a high point or hopeful bit of life.

Made me worry a lot about his understanding and how he's being taught.

Stalker songs.....

every move you make, every breath you take, I'll be watching you.

one way or another, I'm gonna getcha, I'll getcha, I'll getcha!

Oh great. Another one who hasn’t read the thread and can’t understand the lyrics of Every Breath You Take or One Way or Another.
sueelleker · 26/06/2021 18:41

I think in the song Young Girl he is actually refraining from doing anything with her, although he is tempted he doesn't go there once he finds out her age, which is as it should be.
I always link this mentally with "Does Your Mother Know?" Both are about young girls pretending to be older than they are.

Lepetitpiggy · 26/06/2021 19:07

@YesItsMeIDontCare

I hate that song although I used to be a Pink Floyd fan and saw them in the early 70s. They were all public school educated as far as I know but would deny any education at all to the majority of children angry. I probably take it too personally as I was a teacher and school was not like that in my experience.

The song was never meant to be taken out of the context of the whole album. It's specifically about Roger Waters' experience of school in the post war years. There is a short song before "Another Brick In The Wall" on the album - "The Happiest Days of Our Lives" which runs directly in and sets up ABITW. The very start is

When we grew up and went to school

The record company fucked it up.

Actually, Sid and Roger went to Cambs high school for boys which is now Hills Road Sixth Form college - basically the local grammar of the time.

It is really, really easy to hypnotise chickens, there are even YouTube videos showing how simple it is to do.

This Alone Is Love - Aha

This alone is love
No small thing
This alone is love
That my love brings
And all of us
Who are traveling by trap-doors
Our souls are a myriad of wars
And I'm losing everyone
It will make my last breath pass out at dawn
It will make my body dissolve out in the blue
Oh baby, what can we do

How do you travel by trap doors?!

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 26/06/2021 21:15

How funny!

Yes - can you imagine; of course DD, do go and live with that guy who's nearly your dad's age, in fact, invite him round for Sunday lunch 🤢

Heymumma29 · 26/06/2021 21:45

Busted- What I go to school for.. makes me feel so uneasy every time I hear it! Essentially a song about a teacher having an affair with young school boys, but still it’s so catchy haha! X

cluecu · 26/06/2021 21:52

When Tracy Chapman sings 'so take your fast car and keep on driving' at the end, does that mean with her and the family all together or is she getting rid? I always thought it was as a couple but now I'm thinking she's realised he's no good?

Bichette · 26/06/2021 22:02

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them
If you did

Elton John- Rocketman
Since when was it cold in hell?

No its a song about a school boy fantasising about his teacher. They actually named her in an interview some years ago and said that all the lads fancied her.

She wants him gone.

The verse is-
You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me'd find it
I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving

She was counting on him being the one who’d help her have a good life, stable jobs, and a house in the suburbs.

Instead, he became an alcoholic like her dad and so she didn’t want him in her life anymore.

Her life with him was no better than her life with her father.

ermm....if they are your kids and you take them to Mars surely you are there to raise them? Or am I missing the point that Elton John is bemoaning the lack of Nanny agencies on Mars?! :o
