Two songs I heard today....

Me and Mrs Jones

Me and Mrs. Jones
We got a thing, goin' on
We both know that it's wrong
But it's much too strong
To let it go now
We meet every day at the same cafe
Six-thirty and no one knows she'll be there
Holding hands, making all kinds of plans
While the juke box plays our favorite songs

So.....ignoring the kids, no sex and pretending that her old man has no clue what is going on...dont sound like much of an affair to me!

Do Wa Diddy

There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'
Snappin' her fingers and shufflin' her feet, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'

I'm thinking more severe MH issues than an attractive hip young thing?!

Any more that I have missed?

@cornflowersandpoppies

I think there was a LOT of ‘dark sarcasm in the classroom’ when I was at school (80s and 90s) and casual cruelty in fact.

But isn’t the point that it’s rebelling against the system which sets some up to fail.

Probably less than in the years before, though, (I was at school 1959-1973) and probably a lot less than in a public school at that time. There wasn't any dark sarcasm in my classroom and I loved to encourage creativity and individuality - I told you I took it personally - but I also taught the way I was trained, I wasn't some kind of renegade.
@ViciousJackdaw and with so many Christians in AfricaI'm pretty sure "they" do know it's Christmas.
In Eithiopia they are Coptic Christians, so they celebrate Christmas on 7th January….

babbaloushka · 26/06/2021 12:35

@Belleager

Are we human, or are we dancers? Hmm
This always gets me! I thought it was "denser" which is about as nonsensical.

I hate that song although I used to be a Pink Floyd fan and saw them in the early 70s. They were all public school educated as far as I know but would deny any education at all to the majority of children angry. I probably take it too personally as I was a teacher and school was not like that in my experience.

The song was never meant to be taken out of the context of the whole album. It's specifically about Roger Waters' experience of school in the post war years. There is a short song before "Another Brick In The Wall" on the album - "The Happiest Days of Our Lives" which runs directly in and sets up ABITW. The very start is

When we grew up and went to school

The record company fucked it up.

That explains it then and also fits with my evaluation. Fair enough, although I think it is generally presented out of context.

@iklboo

You got a fast car I want a ticket to anywhere Maybe we make a deal Maybe together we can get somewhere Any place is better Starting from zero got nothing to lose Maybe we'll make something Me, myself, I got nothing to prove

You got a fast car
I got a plan to get us outta here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
And finally see what it means to be living

See, my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle, that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did

You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
We gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

So I remember we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
We go cruising, entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs

So I remember we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me'd find it
I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving

So I remember we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so you can fly away?
You gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

Where are the plot holes?

Is the plot hole the fact they want to move to the city but then later want to 'live in the suburbs'??
🤷‍♀️

Carpenters - Merry Christmas Darling
'The logs on the fire - fill me with desire'

AmadeustheAlpaca · 26/06/2021 12:44

“Are we human or are we dancers?” was allegedly inspired by a quote from Hunter S Thompson who wrote “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”

Arbadacarba · 26/06/2021 12:44

Yeah...by wicked uncle Ernie

Uncle Ernie and Cousin Kevin added to Tommy's distress, but the root cause of the damage was seeing his mother's new lover kill his father (in the film version - on the album it was the other way round and his father killed the lover).

Keeping on the christmas theme -

'The nights are colder now - maybe I should close the door"

YOU THINK???? 😆

It's dancer - most definitely not plural.

@StyleAndLasers

Babies by Pulp as well - I get that Jarvis The Character is sneaking around spying on girls shagging their boyfriends (the little housebreaking pervert,) and I think that he ends up getting caught by the sister of the girl he really fancies having fallen asleep in her room (or wardrobe?), then the girl he fancies finds out and he says he only slept with her sister because she looked like her.

I find it odd that he is able to let himself in to all these houses (at least two - (Neve’s house and the sister’s house). But I really don’t understand why he says “I came home one day and all her things were gone” - a/ what does he mean, home, it’s not his home, and b/ why were her things gone? What’s the relevance of that?

Jarv's only in one house> in a house with his friend that he likes and they are earwigging on her big sister "who has boys in her room"

Then he gets too nosey and hides inside the sis's wardrobe to spy on her (how he gets in the house w/out little sister isn't clear, but I think my mum would let my mates in if I turned up and they were on way from school & not there yet, to wait so maybe that? )

anyway later he goes to hide in big sis's room but she has cleared her stuff out (I always reckoned she was off to uni) then big sis finds him and seems to get it on with him.

I always thought Neve is the person little sis get smatey with because Jarv is being off with her (he has this grubby secret he daren't tell little sis cos she might tell her mother )

Jarv _ creepy teen yeah but pretty sure its one house with two sisters in he's stalking in

SmudgeButt · 26/06/2021 12:59

Stalker songs.....

every move you make, every breath you take, I'll be watching you.

one way or another, I'm gonna getcha, I'll getcha, I'll getcha!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/06/2021 13:05

It's the usual Brandon Flowers attempt at being special. Supposedly an attempt at self centering like gonzo journalism.

Misses by a mile and only adds to my negative opinion of his arrogance - no Brandon you aren't the best band in years, not underrated or misunderstood. It's you that doesn't grasp your real meaning in the wider world!

Pity, as some of their stuff definitely passes the old grey whistle test.

🤷‍♀️

But being American I've assumed they lived in a small hick town and so moving to the city could mean a place big enough to have suburbs.

scoobiedoobiedoo · 26/06/2021 13:09

The song Cecilia is about writers block, St Cecilia is the Patron Saint of music, Paul Simon was despairing about not be able to write a song.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 26/06/2021 13:19

Great thread OP!

I loved Heaven 17 growing up but the 🤢🤢🤢🤢 of 'Come live with me' passed me by at the time.

"I was 37, you were 17. You were half my age, the youth I'd never been.
All that kissing; no passion missing; come live with me, kiss the boys goodbye, come live with me "

Nameisjustaname · 26/06/2021 13:19

So we are 6 pages in and nobody has mentioned the chimney?? Grin

Saying that I have just googled and apparently it does actually mean something. I have never checked before.
Maybe the lyrics should be "whats she gonna look like with a big house on her"? Confused

So the the woman is a right witch and its take about what she would look like with a house on her, not chimney like in the wizard of oz.

Chimney is slang for a black eye, I thought? Which makes sense if you're talking about the Tamperer song.
CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/06/2021 13:23

There is a house track called drop a house on the bitch!

Surely just a Wizard of Oz reference.

icecreamgirl94 · 26/06/2021 13:26

@Nameisjustaname chimney just means a black eye. Compared to a lot of other suggestions on here that song makes sense 😂
