Two songs I heard today....

Me and Mrs Jones

Me and Mrs. Jones
We got a thing, goin' on
We both know that it's wrong
But it's much too strong
To let it go now
We meet every day at the same cafe
Six-thirty and no one knows she'll be there
Holding hands, making all kinds of plans
While the juke box plays our favorite songs

So.....ignoring the kids, no sex and pretending that her old man has no clue what is going on...dont sound like much of an affair to me!

Do Wa Diddy

There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'
Snappin' her fingers and shufflin' her feet, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'

I'm thinking more severe MH issues than an attractive hip young thing?!

Any more that I have missed?
**@MadMadMadamMim* waving at fellow Stranglers fan.

Golden Brown came on in the car the other day and my kids were whinging about what a stupid song, what does it even mean. Grin
OMG @MartyHart

What have you raised! Golden Brown is probably my favourite song of all time. Grin

Nameisjustaname · 26/06/2021 13:30

Never, in my 40+ years have I heard that chimney is slang for black eye!Shock

StyleAndLasers · 26/06/2021 13:30

@skoobidoobedoop But he says something like “you went with Neve, and Neve was coming on, and I thought I heard you laughing, when his mum and dad were gone “ - so it must be Neves house otherwise why would his mum and dad being gone matter?

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 26/06/2021 13:34

Not a case of writers thinking the song through..but the song being stupid. RUDE by Magic..asks for permission. Dad says no. The whines on how he is being rude and it doesn't matter...he isn't being rude! You asked his opinion..he said nope

LonelinessIsACloakYouWear · 26/06/2021 13:36

Plot holes in Fast Car? Maybe she meant pot holes.

StyleAndLasers · 26/06/2021 13:36

@scoobiedoobiedoo

The song Cecilia is about writers block, St Cecilia is the Patron Saint of music, Paul Simon was despairing about not be able to write a song.
Really?! I have never heard that before. Has PS said that, or is that just an interpretation? On the other hand, he said Mother and Child Reunion was about a chicken and egg dish or something, so what do I know.
StyleAndLasers · 26/06/2021 13:37

Sorry, that sounded disbelieving, it wasn’t, just surprised

DontCallMeBaby · 26/06/2021 13:42

@DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo that came up on my Spotify the other day, driving along with 17yo DD next to me.

Both, as one: Ew.

Snowpatrolling · 26/06/2021 13:49

@Allington

The Darkness - One way ticket to hell... and back.

That'll be a return ticket then, not one way

Massive darkness fan here!!

The point of that lyric is that a one way ticket to hell means a no return ticket
So he kept trying to escape hell (drugs) but kept failing,
So it was always a one way ticket, to hell, and back to hell.

Hope that makes sense

Love the darkness!!!

Belleager · 26/06/2021 13:52

Much as I love Queen (and the crossdressing video)

I'm falling in love
I'm falling in love for the first time
This time I know it's for real ...

just sounds like every stroppy irrational teenager ever ...

Greenrubber · 26/06/2021 14:00

@FastnetLundyRockall

Is it not guillotine? Being a killer queen?
I don't know anyone who has died of gelatine but I do avoid it

Greenrubber · 26/06/2021 14:02

@froppusue

That's exactly what I get from the lyric
Because he then sings it's nothing to do with me

Imissmoominmama · 26/06/2021 14:07

He could see I had no eyes- Diana Ross. Confused.

Last night was so much fun, and now your sheets are dirty.
The streets are dirty too, but you never look back over what you’ve done.

Wtf are you on about, Johnny?

KowhaiWhy · 26/06/2021 14:11

One of my favourites as a teenager (I am ancient now Grin). Horrified, really, to hear it with contemporary ears:

Don't You Want Me"

You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
When I met you
I picked you out, I shook you up
And turned you around
Turned you into someone new
Now five years later on you've got the world at your feet
Success has been so easy for you
But don't forget it's me who put you where you are now
And I can put you back down too.

Don't. Don't you want me?
You know I can't believe it when I hear that you won't see me
Don't. Don't you want me?
You know I don't believe you when you say that you don't need me

It's much too late to find
When you think you've changed your mind
You'd better change it back or we will both be sorry

Don't you want me, baby?
Don't you want me? Oh!
Don't you want me, baby?
Don't you want me? Oh!

RaininSummer · 26/06/2021 14:14

Thank you on the posters who explained birdhouse to me. I obviously have never listened carefully enough. I like it more now.

KowhaiWhy · 26/06/2021 14:16

And one of the dirtiest mainstream songs I think I have ever heard (might only be antipodean... but an 80s/90s "classic"):

It was a party night,
It was the end of school
His head was feeling light -- first time
She seemed much older then,
She had turned 17,
And she knew some older men -- first time
Come said the boy,
Let's go down to the sand.
Let's do what we wanna do --
Let me be a man for you.
Ho, oh, oh, oh
Ho, oh, oh, oh
Ho, oh, oh, oh
Ho, oh, oh, oh
And she said -- well I've been waiting for a long time,
And you've changed a lot.
Up-till now it's been the wrong time
To know whether to from here or not
Ohhh well come with me boy,
Just take my hand,
I'll let you see what you wanna see -- come on be a man for me.
Ho, ho, ho.
We've both been waiting for a long time,
We've both changed a lot.
Up-till now it seemed the wrong time --

scoobiedoobiedoo · 26/06/2021 14:28

Styleandlasers Paul Simon has suggested that the song is about St Cecilia, I have read before that many songs that mention the name Cecilia are referencing St Cecilia.

Octopuscake · 26/06/2021 14:37

Fast car is so beautiful, partly because of the way the song handles the use of time. The verse/chorus structure undercuts the singer, who is an "unreliable narrator". She tells us her hopes for life, but the driving force of the song structure itself gives us a different and sadder expectation of what will happen to her. We know it better than she does, which is the absolute killer.

The song has the device that each verse tells a different bit of her story; childhood, deciding to leave, to the start of it all going wrong as he stays out late, etc. Then the chorus takes us to the one moment that matters to her, the moment that feels to her like a decisive pivot.

But we know culturally and subconsciously that verses typically carry us along a story and choruses are just moments of high emotion, so the song shows us how a life is actually built. As we live, we feel life is built through single powerful moments in time, or through our decisions (which feel like the perfect moment of acceleration). But actually life is a long journey of many verses and you can get on a track which quickly leads you to a bad end (like a fast car taking you inevitably to your destination). We don't need to hear everything that happens to her to know where she's going.

At the end of the song we have been taken on an accelerated ride through her whole life, and we stop- just as the cycle starts to repeat. The lyrics are incredibly clever and poignant.

There's also the thing that the tonic note musically is repeated pretty much always, most chords have the inversion so it's a ?G I think?? so the song has the illusion of musical progress but never gets there.

Sorry! I do this too much :)

MartyHart · 26/06/2021 14:54

@MadMadMadamMim I know, I know.

walkoflifewoohoo · 26/06/2021 14:59

All this Fast Car love - I'm tainted after spending way too long in prison environments but it is the anthem of pretty much every convict I've ever met.

And I've met loads.

Sussexbonfireviking · 26/06/2021 15:06

@CandyLeBonBon

Meatloaf, singing 'I would do anything for live, but I won't do THAT!'

Did we ever discover what 'THAT' was?

I once helped on an mtv tiebreak, with this song I said "i'll do anything for love, but I'm not doing that!!"

My friend won, and we went to Germany to see him live, and meet backstage

I know the territory
I've been around
It'll all turn to dust
And we'll all fall down
And sooner or later you'll be screwing around
I won't do that!
No, I won't do that!

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 26/06/2021 15:13

Did anyone mention that rapey song sung by Olly Murs, Hey Beautiful?

You say that you don't, don't
But I know you do, do
Playing hard to get, get,
Girl I'm onto you,
Telling me no, no,
You really mean yes, yes
Let yourself go, go
Why don't you confess?

UnitedRoad · 26/06/2021 15:21

We had to make up a dance to this when I was at school - Frankie by Sister Sledge. We changed the lyrics from Frankie - do you remember me, to Frankie - are you a paedophile.

You were 15 and I was 12
It was summer, we were so in love
I never loved anyone this much
Look at me, I’m thrilled to your touch

Yuck

PrincessGraceless · 26/06/2021 15:23

Great thread. Also love the insight into Birdhouse - one of my all-time favourite songs.

Lisa Stansfield’s All Around The World always has me shouting at the radio!

‘Been around the world and I, I, I
I can't find my baby
I don't know when, I don't know why
Why he's gone away’

Really - you don’t know why? Could it be something to do with:

‘We had a quarrel and I let myself go
I said so many things, things he didn't know
And I was, oh, oh, so bad
I don't think he's coming back, mm, mhm
He gave the reason, the reasons he should go
And he said things he hadn't said before
And he was, oh, oh, so mad
And I don't think he's coming back, coming back
I did too much lying …’
Hmm

bookh · 26/06/2021 15:26

@PyongyangKipperbang it's taken me all day to remember what this reminds me of!

Peter Kay sketch, how? How did she look good?
