Two songs I heard today....

Me and Mrs Jones

Me and Mrs. Jones
We got a thing, goin' on
We both know that it's wrong
But it's much too strong
To let it go now
We meet every day at the same cafe
Six-thirty and no one knows she'll be there
Holding hands, making all kinds of plans
While the juke box plays our favorite songs

So.....ignoring the kids, no sex and pretending that her old man has no clue what is going on...dont sound like much of an affair to me!

Do Wa Diddy

There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'
Snappin' her fingers and shufflin' her feet, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'

I'm thinking more severe MH issues than an attractive hip young thing?!

Any more that I have missed?

@FastnetLundyRockall

Killer Queen! She's a Killer Queen Gunpowder, gelatine ..

gelatine! ? She's going to blow up a ...jelly? Might she actually need...gelignite?!

Gelatin or blasting jelly. Right idea wrong spelling.

I am wondering if some posters read poetry this literally too Grin

‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ cue arguing about it being rainy or an Indian summer or whatever Grin

MadameGazelle · 26/06/2021 10:29

@NCasnottooutmyself

Oasis- She’s Electric

She's got a sister
And God only knows how I've missed her
And on the palm of her hand is a blister

Sister/blister Hmm

I always thought these lyrics meant that the person in the song was shagging the sister, but the sister was a bit of a bike and that's why she had a blister on the palm of her hand Grin

@Omemiserum

Every breath you take Every move you make Every bond you break Every step you take I'll be watching you

Police aka 'the stalker song'

In what sense are the lyrics not properly thought through? I’ve seen an interview with Sting in which he expresses surprise that people think that it’s a romantic song when he wrote it as a ‘stalker song’.

Which, to @Whitchurch’s point above, doesn’t mean that he himself is or was a stalker!

Police aka 'the stalker song'

@Omemiserum this is meant to be taken as it sounds! Sting said it is not a love song at all, it’s about an obsession. It’s so weird when people have it at their weddings...

Also ‘Don’t Stand So Close To Me’ he had to clear up as he was once a teacher but swore it was not about his own experience! I love The Police for some of their non-sensical and extreme lyrics, their song choices are more interesting than just the usual stuff.

I like non-sensical lyrics to be honest. A huge fan of ELO, some of their stuff is batty.

All things bright & beautiful :-

The rich man in his castle,
The poor man at his gate,
He made them, high or lowly,
And ordered their estate.

So God was landed gentry.

'Make a little birdhouse in your soul', always leaves me pondering

cornflowersandpoppies · 26/06/2021 10:36

That was the generally accepted view in Victorian times, georgy

It was written around 1848.

Whatever the song by Oasis is, you can usually sing "And so, Sally can wait/she knows it's too late..." to it.

IronTeeth · 26/06/2021 10:41

Heh hem, fast car??

iklboo · 26/06/2021 10:43

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Any place is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
Me, myself, I got nothing to prove

You got a fast car
I got a plan to get us outta here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
Won't have to drive too far
Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
And finally see what it means to be living

See, my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle, that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
His body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did

You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away?
We gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

So I remember we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
We go cruising, entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs

So I remember we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me'd find it
I got no plans, I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving

So I remember we were driving, driving in your car
Speed so fast it felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I-I had a feeling that I belonged
I-I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so you can fly away?
You gotta make a decision
Leave tonight or live and die this way

Where are the plot holes?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/06/2021 10:46

@Allington

The Darkness - One way ticket to hell... and back.

That'll be a return ticket then, not one way

Perhaps it's one way but not on a linear route. Like the Circle Line on the tube, if you stay on long enough you get back to where you started in a single journey.

Compre the songs you're talking about with ones banned in the 1950s and 60s! littlethings.com/lifestyle/banned-songs-50s-60s/3587886-13

PinkiOcelot · 26/06/2021 10:51

I often listen to lyrics now whereas I used to just sing along. I think a lot of the time they use rhyming words and they make no sense whatsoever.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/06/2021 10:53

Any Duran Duran lyrics for me!

I mean I love them dearly but most of Simon le Bon's songwriting is pretentious wank! 😂

The reflex is a lonely child, who's waiting by the park
The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover, isn't that bizarre?
And every little thing the reflex does
Leaves you answered with a question mark

I love them but god knows he writes nonsense!

I've called you so many times today
And I guess it's all true what your girlfriends say
That you don't ever want to see me again
And your brother's gonna kill me, and he's six feet ten

= obvious case of 'now what can I rhyme with 'again' ... oh, this'll do.

FionnulaTheCooler · 26/06/2021 11:07

There's a song I keep hearing on the radio just now that has the line "I sleep on the left side, if you sleep on the left side move to the right I would do it for you". If she would move to the other side of the bed for her partner, why not just do it instead of asking them to move?

insertcleverusername · 26/06/2021 11:08

Backstreet Boys, I Want it That Way. What do they actually want, and what way do they want it?!

Iamthewombat · 26/06/2021 11:10

@RaininSummer

'Make a little birdhouse in your soul', always leaves me pondering
@CuriousaboutSamphire has already picked this up, but that is by no means the oddest lyric in the song. It is written from the perspective of a nightlight that looks like a blue canary. Which is a refreshing change from “ooh baby I love you” or “you’ve broken my heart and now I’m sad”.

As a PP pointed out, our culture would be poorer if we didn’t have unusual works of art that don’t immediately (or ever!) make sense. That we don’t ‘get’ them doesn’t mean that they aren’t properly thought through.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/06/2021 11:12

Meatloaf, singing 'I would do anything for live, but I won't do THAT!'

Did we ever discover what 'THAT' was?
