Two songs I heard today....

Me and Mrs Jones

Me and Mrs. Jones
We got a thing, goin' on
We both know that it's wrong
But it's much too strong
To let it go now
We meet every day at the same cafe
Six-thirty and no one knows she'll be there
Holding hands, making all kinds of plans
While the juke box plays our favorite songs

So.....ignoring the kids, no sex and pretending that her old man has no clue what is going on...dont sound like much of an affair to me!

Do Wa Diddy

There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'
Snappin' her fingers and shufflin' her feet, singin'
'Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do'

I'm thinking more severe MH issues than an attractive hip young thing?!

Any more that I have missed?

Still laughing at the thought of someone shuffling along the street, clicking their fingers, singing doo wah diddy 😂 100% would definitely avoid them
@Ashard20
The other one that makes me cringe is in Ethiopia again! Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you. Er, not quite the right message to send out there!

I used to think this too, but is it maybe a reference to how easy it is to ignore things that are happening in other parts of the world? Like how we might think 'phew at least it's not happening to us'? I don't think it's endorsing that view, more highlighting that it's selfish to think that way. Still can't stand Bono tbf.
I think the way he sang the line made it sound very cynical-just right.

BlackberrySky · 26/06/2021 09:10

REM
"I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs,
I'm tossing out punchlines that were never there "

MartyHart · 26/06/2021 09:11

I always thought the line in Do they know it's Christmas meant count your blessings, they are people like us it could happen anywhere.

AdobeWanKenobi · 26/06/2021 09:16

Always slipping from my hands
Sand's a time of it's own
Take your seaside arms and write the next line
Oh, I want the truth to be known

Spandau Ballet. True.
Seaside arms? What?!

@MadMadMadamMim

No more heroes any more..no more heroes.

What ever happened to..Leon Trotsky?

Um was Trotsky heroic? Responsible for a shit load of deaths and executions in the Russian Civil war. Ran away and had an affair with Frida Kahlo. Murdered in Mexico by Stalin's assassin.

Not heroic imo. (Love The Stranglers though)

Whatever happened to... Leon Trotsky? He got an ice pick... that made his ears burn...

What about that makes you think they are saying he's heroic?

I always find threads like this plain stupid. They assume that song writers always write from a viewpoint that they themselves subscribe to or promote. If they write about being a stalker they are saying that they are one, or if they write about killing someone that is something they would do. Take that to a logical conclusion then ban thrillers and murder mysteries. Look closely at plays. Shut down artistic expression until we live in a bland and sanitised world.

Similarly, a song, or a line in a poem for example, doesn't have to be grammatically correct for us to understand or appreciate it. That's the skill.
"The black and white T.V. has long seen a picture"
We all know that that means.

Babdoc · 26/06/2021 09:18

Tashface, while the lines you quote are indeed those of a misogynist abuser:
“I used to love to make you cry
It made me feel like a man inside”
you have omitted the next lines and the main point of the song:
“If I had been a man in reality,
You would still be here loving me”

And “Every day I made you cry
I’m paying girl, til the day I die”

I took it as a warning to abusers that their girlfriends would dump them - which was quite progressive for those days!

Whitchurch · 26/06/2021 09:18

And I'll also add that irony is clearly lost on many here.

MorganSeventh · 26/06/2021 09:18

@Allington

The Darkness - One way ticket to hell... and back.

That'll be a return ticket then, not one way

I can understand people missing the joke in the case of the more earnest, po-faced indie bands, but what in the way The Darkness of all bands presented themselves would make you think they were meant to be taken entirely seriously?

I love Fast Car. That album was the soundtrack to my early youth. I need the holes explained as I can't see any!

Puffalicious · 26/06/2021 09:30

Also, watched REM at Glastonbury 1999 last night. So many of Stipe's lyrics are mental/ obscure but that's part of the package. He is a God in my eyes, everything a pop front man should be.

Arbadacarba · 26/06/2021 09:40

Tommy's skill at the pinball table was meant to be a mystery because he couldn't see or hear.

Though, as this was caused by psychological trauma rather than a physical condition, it was possible he could see and hear at some level.

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/06/2021 09:44

I've just looked up the lyrics to Fast Car. Where the heck are the plot holes?

MarjorieBouvier · 26/06/2021 09:47
**@MadMadMadamMim* waving at fellow Stranglers fan.

Golden Brown came on in the car the other day and my kids were whinging about what a stupid song, what does it even mean. Grin
The first time I heard it, Gordon Brown had just taken over from Tony Blair and I thought it was a song about him 🙈

I'm my defence, I was about 10.

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/06/2021 09:49

I can't believe no-one has said Coldplay yet. They could have a thread of their own.

HappyDays40 · 26/06/2021 09:50

I love the Do Wa Diddy image OP.
Mine is Poison by Alice Cooper
Your mouth, so hot
Your web, I'm caught
Your skin, so wet
Black lace, on sweat....

It think its meant to be about a dominatrix sort of relationship and is meant to be sexy but in reality it soind like the lady has been wearing to much PVC and lace and needs a showerEnvy not envy.

newnortherner111 · 26/06/2021 09:54

Have to agree about the nonsensicality of some of REMs lyrics, but they remain the one band I wish could reform so I could see them live.

Coldplay by contrast, I have consciously uncoupled myself from listening to. St Peter may not call Chris Martin's name.

FastnetLundyRockall · 26/06/2021 09:55

Killer Queen!
She's a Killer Queen
Gunpowder, gelatine ..

gelatine! ? She's going to blow up a ...jelly? Might she actually need...gelignite?!

Lepetitpiggy · 26/06/2021 10:01

Watched TOTP2 the other night with dh and realized pretty much all of the songs I danced to at the youth club disco in the late 70s were completely horrific.

Racey: 'Some girls will, some girls won't, some girls need a lotta loving and some girls don't...some say they will and some girls lie' was one dh and I had a debate about. He said it was all harmless tongue in cheek fun, but I think it was bloody dangerous.

See also 'Nice legs, shame about the face'. As 15 year olds we loved this as applied it to girls at school we had decided were ugly. Awful times

3scape · 26/06/2021 10:13

I see the MH hate is very strong on here. You'd assume someone singing has MH problems? You must be the most joyless empty souls.

Notimeforaname · 26/06/2021 10:14

It was all yellow

Omemiserum · 26/06/2021 10:14

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I'll be watching you

Police aka 'the stalker song'

Belleager · 26/06/2021 10:17

@Notallowedtobesick

Brilliant, thanks - been bothering me for years

dottiedodah · 26/06/2021 10:19

Wherediditgo I always liked the Stranglers ,At one interview a few years back ,they actually said it was about a girl .However in another said it was Heroin .So who knows?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/06/2021 10:21

@Nutrafin

One way ticket to hell and back

Yeah....didnt think that through
That's the joke though.

And it skits a few other bands and albums. I suspect you'd have to have some NWOBHM history to smirk at it 😉
