... to not consider vibrators "mainstream"?

PavlovsDoggie · 25/06/2021 21:08

In the sense that most of us have them, etc.

They're advertised on MN, but the reality is you never see them mentioned in mainstream books, movies, TV, etc.

Silly thoughts on a train passing time on a Friday evening!!

YABU - no of course they are mainstream, most of us have them

YANBU - yes, they are niche, just see ads for them on MN, but not much out there in the team world

I think they aren't mentioned much historically because women weren't really encouraged be interested in sex for their own benefit until pretty recently...

3cats2kids · 25/06/2021 21:14

They are pretty mainstream. Anne Summers is a high street shop!

TrickyGoldfinch · 25/06/2021 21:16

They've been around since the Victorian era so I'd say they're relatively mainstream!

Kanaloa · 25/06/2021 21:18

Lots of everyday things are never mentioned in mainstream books/telly etc. Was just talking to ds the other day about how nobody in books ever goes for a poo. Of course in real life everyone does.

Kanaloa · 25/06/2021 21:18

But yeah I’d say fairly mainstream. Easy to buy, just a private thing.

AnneLovesGilbert · 25/06/2021 21:20

Very mainstream. Why? Do you want women to share stories about their wanking habits?

MiddleClassProblem · 25/06/2021 21:22

I’ve seen them mentioned more on mainstream tv than female contraception other than the pill.

Sillyduckseverywhere · 25/06/2021 21:22

Incredibly mainstream.
I've bought them as gifts!

OverByYer · 25/06/2021 21:26

They are selling them in Sainsbury’s now. I was looking for Sudafed the other day and looked up and saw some on the top shelf next to the condoms. I was a bit shocked if I’m honest

DisgruntledPelican · 25/06/2021 21:28

Depends on the kind of movies, books and TV you consume, I suppose.

It’s not something I discuss very often but I’d be surprised if anyone under the age of 45 didn’t have at least one.

MrsDuggee · 25/06/2021 21:28

Completely mainstream. Aren’t MN ads linked to what you’ve googled though? Through cookies and algorithms and things? I’ve never seen one on here 😂

PinkPlantCase · 25/06/2021 21:30

I’ve never seen an add for them on mumsnet 😂 they are pretty mainstream though

Morgan12 · 25/06/2021 21:30

I just wish they didn't cost so much 😂

chickenyhead · 25/06/2021 21:33

Very mainstream, just don't tell the men, they can feel threatened by them.

helpmewiththisnew · 25/06/2021 21:33

My ad is about a fridge, I must be cold stuff, rather than hot stuff. Anyway I'd say mainstream, I have had one, but don't have one now. I find they make sex a bit disappointing in comparison and I don't like using as a duo.

chickenyhead · 25/06/2021 21:34

Mine is about hairloss for some reason.

LoopTheLoops · 25/06/2021 21:34

I’m 32 and don’t have one! Never have. I was bought one for a gift and found it it very cringey thing to gift someone

Morgan12 · 25/06/2021 21:35

And yeah the adds are stuff you have googled etc.

Mines is Makeup

chickenyhead · 25/06/2021 21:36

The ads depend upon your privacy settings. I have random crap.

chipsandgin · 25/06/2021 21:37

Literally never seen an ad for one on MN & I’ve been on here for 18 years! I think you’re rather giving the game away there OP as ads are tailored to your search history etc. Currently all I have is two Boden ads…clearly my browsing history is a lot less exciting than yours.. ;)

BlowDryRat · 25/06/2021 21:38

Yes, they can desensitise you so it becomes harder to orgasm without one. A female version of death grip, I suppose.

I'd say they're fairly mainstream but still risqué. They're definitely post-watershed comedy matter rather than a potential prime time ad.

Vetyveriohohoh · 25/06/2021 21:39

The global market is expected to reach around $56bn by 2027 and is currently growing at around 10% per year. Pretty mainstream.

shivawn · 25/06/2021 21:41

I don't know how mainstream they are but all my friends have or have had one and no one has ever been shocked if I mention them so I guess I'd say pretty common.

SuccessfullySaved · 25/06/2021 21:43

Mine is an amazon advert for a sleep mask with built in headphones....that actually sounds genius

But yes, I think they are pretty mainstream

SionnachRua · 25/06/2021 21:44

Mainstream but kept quiet. I mean it's hardly something you'd be chatting to Shirley and Janet in work about, is it?
