... to not consider vibrators "mainstream"?

144 replies

PavlovsDoggie · 25/06/2021 21:08

In the sense that most of us have them, etc.

They're advertised on MN, but the reality is you never see them mentioned in mainstream books, movies, TV, etc.

Silly thoughts on a train passing time on a Friday evening!!

YABU - no of course they are mainstream, most of us have them

YANBU - yes, they are niche, just see ads for them on MN, but not much out there in the team world

If you've found this page in search of vibrators that have been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best vibrators useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ 💐

Hm, you can get them in boots, Superdrug, Ann summers.. I’m sure there’s plenty more high street stores too. I think that makes them fairly mainstream.

I just think it’s still a little ‘taboo’ to mention maybe?

KnightKnurse · 26/06/2021 21:32

Totally mainstream. Also, I’ve never met a man that was intimidated or against them in any way. If they are, there are likely many other problems too with that guy.

me4real · 26/06/2021 21:46

@PavlovsDoggie Well done. Magic Wands are awesome, hope you enjoy Smile

@KnightKnurse I only met one who was kind of against them and he was a violent rapist. I imagine some types might not like them as it means women might need them less.

@PavlovsDoggie

FOMO, Fear of missing out, after a quick research, I've taken the plunge and just ordered the magic wand.

It doesn't look like I expected actually but will see. It does indeed look for like something for sports injury.

Amazon Prime, DH account :;

Most excellent, did you get the plug in version or battery ?
PavlovsDoggie · 26/06/2021 22:55

Rechargeable ( can purchase from US store ). I actually do have some neck and shoulder problems, so that’s what prompted me after the other replies. I guess it could be multi function. It really does look like sports equipment.

I know some people need them to finish, not the case with me.

I’d never had an O until I tried one. Certainly in the mainstream, and regularly part of any treatment for sexual problems.

I agree on the shape and look, but it worked and is regularly part of treatment for anorgasmia.

Horehound · 26/06/2021 23:03

I left mine in the bed a fee days ago. DH found it and placed it under the duvet on my side. I had taken ages getting ready for bed and was surprised when he was still awake. I pulled the duvet back and boom bright red rabbit staring up and me. He just winked. Penny dropped as to why he stayed awake. Erm no mate, I'm off to bed. Rabbit did a good job lol

chickenyhead · 26/06/2021 23:04

I don't get on with the wands. They just numb everything for me.

likestartingover · 26/06/2021 23:05

Mainstream in Western world, but beyond that I’m not sure. It is certainly marketed at us though. I was curious as a result of magazine and on line articles.

First time I told DH I was getting one, his response was: oh wow, that’s nice, can I watch?

PyongyangKipperbang · 26/06/2021 23:25

It was a wand type that left me completely unable to orgasm without a toy, so while they may be used to treat women who cant orgasm I wonder if its actually the best treatment? If they can orgasm with a toy then surely the issue is psychological and I question whether training them to only be able to O with one is actually the best treatment as (ime) it makes them less likely to O during sex or digital masturbation which is presumably why they will have sought treatment in the first place. It took me a very very long time to retrain after ditching the toys, and I never had any problems previous to using them.

LizJamIsFab · 26/06/2021 23:31

I’d be surprised if an adult woman doesn’t have or had a vibrator at any stage in her life

MiddlesexGirl · 27/06/2021 00:02

I'd suggest the opposite ... that it's surely physical. Vibrators are much more intense. In fact I only learned to orgasm without a vibrator after having used one a few times. A hand job still takes about ten times as long, never delivers multiples and isn't on the same scale(!) so I rarely bother.

But that was my problem too. So I binned them off and re-learned how to do it myself. I found that toys were so intense that anything natural, including sex, left me feeling literally nothing despite having not had problems before. I think that the more modern ones are even worse for this. I have a friend who wont have sex with her husband unless he uses a toy on her as its now the only way she can orgasm, which obviously hasnt done much for his self worth in bed and now they rarely have sex at all.
TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 27/06/2021 00:29

Now I know they sell them in sainsbos might be tempted to discreetly pop one in my shopping basket next week..only because they have self checkout!

@PyongyangKipperbang Eh? Confused

The4thForm · 27/06/2021 08:55

Mainstream, considering the sales channels, distribution, variety of models and so on.

Maybe it’s like lube, something that’s often used, but nobody is going to add that to a book or movie plot line.

HangingOver · 27/06/2021 21:39

I didn't understand the fuss about wands until I realised I was using I wrong. For anyone else who found it too intense and then numbing, don't put in on your clitoris, put it about two inches above, apply pressure and pull slightly upwards with it. You'll be sorted

MrsToothyBitch · 28/06/2021 13:51

I love mine. We have 5 and use them together on me. I seem to burn through the favourites though. Even the plug in wand only lasted 5 mo. And yes OP, the packaging said massager- could be used on injuries and had pics of sports silhouettes.

I would say they are very mainstream. You can buy them in poundland and from beauty websites. They're not necessarily a topic for pre-watershed tv but my 70 year old DM has one, and if I chat with friends and it comes up, even those that don't own them have opinions and know what is being talked about.

LittleGwyneth · 28/06/2021 14:39

Every woman I know owns one.
