Looks like we might need a new thread.

He is hoping history will record that Matt Hancock, Health Secretary during the Covid-19 pandemic. resigned over an extramarital affair.

That is a lot better for him and his family than the alternative version of what his actions caused.

charlotteself · 26/06/2021 09:52

I really really didn't want to but I just had to look for a second time at the video to analyse what's happening.

He looks completely smitten but does she look towards the end as though she's standing back to give a clear view of him to the camera? She looks more awkward than him I think.

Something very fishy about it

sashagabadon · 26/06/2021 09:53

I agree with those that say it’s a set up. I don’t think he is in on it though, I think he is the one whose been set up. Maybe the whole thing is a long con?
He seems to have a lot of enemies. I’m not sure exactly why as he doesn’t strike me as an evil type. Maybe he has simply served his useful purpose now and his enemies are trying to force Boris’s hand. The mind boggles

Thewinterofdiscontent · 26/06/2021 09:57

@TheoMeo

Everyone saying it's a private matter - but that isn't what the issue - it's the breaking the rules he made and recruiting his lover to a gov role at tax payers expense which is corrupt.

Very annoying it is constantly being seen as a marital affair that is the problem.
Looks like he'll get off.

I haven’t read all the details but MH had Covid early last year and will have had two vaccines. He’s not a risk is he? People working together are bubbled and very little social distancing goes on.

Obviously contracts going to her family members is dodgy but all the wealthy know each other / went to school or Uni with each other. Wouldn’t matter which party you were talking about. Procurement had to be rushed through.

I think he should resign just for the pressure it puts on the families and the government. Or maybe it’s a useful distraction from something else.I would like to know who leaked the footage too. Whistleblower or in it for the money.

NoMoreHGTVPlease · 26/06/2021 09:57

Matt slapcock has to resign, surely? I love how fast Twitter responds to anything.

Clavinova · 26/06/2021 09:58

He is being advised by someone he may have been having an affair with, whose family include someone who works for a company that won NHS contracts.

On Saturday a spokesperson for PHL [said]...

“PHL has been operating for over 11 years and at all times has secured contracts through the robust tender and procurement processes put in place by local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs)...no contracts have ever been awarded by the Department of Health and Social Care.”
@LizzieSiddal

He’s not the worst minister I’ve worked for (by a long way). He’s not as competent as Gove or - dare I say it - Hunt, and he occasionally gets over enthusiastic about really shit ideas but he’s normally willing to be talked out of it by civil servants.

Honestly i didn’t think he had it in him.
I've previous with Hancock (but not as a CS so not the close daily proximity of that office). TBH he seemed to be permanently a bit out of his depth - hard working but because he was desperately treading water. I could have easily seen him helping cronies to jobs and contracts but more because he wanted them to be his friends than for solely personal gain. Definitely saw wild enthusiasm for really shit ideas suggested usually by one of said mates Grin

I would never have predicted him snogging the tax payer funded PR help he had brought into the office!

Agree on Gove/Hunt (again from a non CS perspective) - competent and capable but tunnel visioned on their pet projects.

@jgw1

Are you from Shrewsbury? If not, I'll challenge you!

Are you one of his constituents who he has been abusive to?

You are not wrong it would certainly be a challenge to find an MP less interested in his constituents.

I am one of his constituents but no, he hasn't been abusive to me (though of course he has recently been found guilty of bullying staff while being drunk). I email him every so often and get a reply that is obviously cut and pasted and often little to do with the issue I raised. And of course he doesn't allow people to reply to his moronic tweets. Very democratic.

The Spectator said this of him in 2008 "Mr Kawczynski’s first problem is that he is, by general cross-party agreement, the stupidest MP in the present House of Commons, arguably the stupidest ever. His second problem is that, unlike many stupid people, he doesn’t appreciate how stupid he is.” I have a picture of him somewhere of him holding a "Vote Tory" sign upside down.

Mind you, Shrewsbury have a history of electing tossers - remember Derek Conway en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Conway

And people keep voting for them....

Orf1abc · 26/06/2021 10:01

I’m not sure exactly why as he doesn’t strike me as an evil type.

If you're given a job that you know you're completely incapable of, and that job involves decision making that directly impacts whether thousands of people live or die, yet you refuse to resign, what does that make you? Maybe not evil, but definitely arrogant.

Then add to that, outright lies about your mistakes, shoving the blame at junior staff rather than taking responsibility. We're getting pretty close to evil there.

I think you’re really onto something there.

If it’s not a set-up are we supposed to believe Matt Hancock wouldn’t have known his office had CCTV?
How would you feel if you found out your office had a secret CCTV camera?

TheoMeo · 26/06/2021 10:09

Naturally Cons spokespersons are playing this down - any more by-elections coming up, a few more Amersham and Chesham results might change there arrogant attitude.

MrsBunHat · 26/06/2021 10:10

Ooh I’m intrigued by the set-up theories because I also thought the snogging looked really awkward, but I just put it down to them being furtive. The standing back and kind of swaying around - really odd and the positioning so that it’s right under the camera with him facing it. Before I saw it I’d imagined it would be off the other side of a room or something but it’s like “snog me here, under this camera” 🧐

C8H10N4O2 · 26/06/2021 10:13

How would you feel if you found out your office had a secret CCTV camera?

Many large offices do. People just forget they are there.

IAmDaveTheSerialShagger · 26/06/2021 10:19

@BiscoffAddict

I’ve seen Kris Bryson’s video and there’s another woman with them. Presumably another aide or colleague?
I thought the other woman was his wife?
MrsBunHat · 26/06/2021 10:25

Loving Ken Clarke’s Twitter this morning

Hahaha brilliant! I love Ken Clarke. I’ve always been a lefty but he makes me nostalgic for the times when the parties actually engaged in intelligent articulate debate, and there were people on all sides who you could respect for their political brains and deeply held views.

There are some such politicians still but they’ve been pushed out of the senior positions. It’s all waffle and lies at the top. Or am I just really old.

Benjispruce3 · 26/06/2021 10:27

I’m intrigued as to what these seemingly intelligent women see in Bojo and Hancock.

Well that applies to more or less the entire Cabinet. Promoted way beyond their abilities "to get Brexit done" and not reshuffled to sort out covid. I don't see any reason to single out Matt Hancock just because he had extra-marital sex. Fed up with all the hypocrisy, I very much doubt everyone shouting the odds over this have followed all the rules all of the time.

Leshan · 26/06/2021 10:30

@Falleybollolo

*But, but, how the fuck does he have the time?!

I can barely see my own partner let alone someone else's and I'm not in charge of a National crisis ffs.*

This! With knobs on!

Because he has minions to do all his grunt work. Just like all the other Tory bigwigs.

Matt Hancock - Matt Handjob more like.

Power isn't it. I presume. I remember wondering what on earth anyone saw in Robin Cook and David Mellor as well.
thedarkling · 26/06/2021 10:32

As a side point - I do like Mrs Hancock's dress in the pictures this morning.

MushMonster · 26/06/2021 10:33

@Thewiseoneincognito

Anyone found what we’re being distracted from yet?
Exactly!
Unsure33 · 26/06/2021 10:36

taking the political scandal apart - I hope he resigns - what about her ?
She is an adult as well - married with three children . I don't see why he should get all the flak - it takes two to tango - if she just said no to his advances ( from an old friend ) this whole thing would not have happened . She should take responsibility as well . Her poor children . And husband

jgw1 · 26/06/2021 10:36

@youshouldbeplotting

Legally, you'd have to define what was and wasn't 'at work

I don't think snogging your colleague counts as being "at work". Why are people trying to wriggle out of the fact that Hancock has at the very least breached the guidelines and may well have broken the law. Why is any one defending this utterly corrupt government?

I think it is important to remember that this is a government that took schools to court for trying to keep their pupils and staff safe.
Pyewackect · 26/06/2021 10:38

That was a pin hole camera which means somebody has been bugging a Governmant Department and that brings in all sorts of state security measures , including MI5 , and numerous laws. Not to mention a clear breach of the Data Protections act. That will make it virtually impossible for The Sun to protect their sources. Bear in mind MI5 and MI6 are one of the most well resourced Security Agencies in the world. They'll find out and somebody will be going down, and not just Gina !!!.
