To ask for ‘tacky‘ holiday suggestions?!

Mummadeze · 24/06/2021 08:33

My DD and I have been on all kinds of holidays together and the ones we have enjoyed the most have been typical English seaside places with arcades and amusements. Blackpool was brilliant and we also enjoyed Clacton on Sea, Butlins and Southend. Can anyone recommend similar destinations in that are on the coast that we might enjoy. Sandy beach is preferable to pebbles! Thanks!

*Woah.

Filey and Scarborough are not bloody "tacky".

If you don't like the Yorkshire coast then bugger off somewhere else.*

Quite agree. And neither is Whitby which undeservedly got a mention upthread.

BarbaraofSeville · 25/06/2021 07:30

Whitby is probably a little dull for what the OP is asking for. There's not a huge amount of amusements and kiss me quick hats.

Bridlington (not a dump BTW) and Scarborough are probably most what the OP is looking for on the Yorkshire coast. Scarborough also has a really good, newish waterpark and spa.

Filey, Whitby Hornsea etc a little more toned down, but you can't call them quiet, Whitby especially is heaving on nice days all year round. A couple of years ago I went between Christmas and New Year because I'd planned to go walking on the North York Moors and it was very foggy, so I thought 'sod it, I'll carry on to Whitby and it was like all of Yorkshire was there. I also think Saltburn is lovely, but quite small, more for a day trip than a week away. But if you picked somewhere fairly central on the Yorkshire coast, you could probably have a couple of trips out to other resorts, for a change of scene.

But for the OP, I'd pick somewhere you haven't been before but not massively far away (2-3 hours max) from where you live, so travel is easiest. No point trekking to North Wales if you live in London.

Mablethorpe!

Absolutely beautiful sandy beaches, donkey rides, 'tacky' arcades etc. My kids love it, we hire a beach hut and there's some beautiful not at all tacky holiday cottages ten mins away. PM me if you want the cottages name.

Hunstanton- New not Old. It’s worth it just for the Wash Monster- an amphibious landing vehicle from the 50’s that they do trips out into the bay on.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 25/06/2021 08:24

I can see why people are annoyed by the use of the term ‘tacky’ but I get what the OP means, she means an arcades and fish and chips 80s vibe not in a bad way.

Anyway I wouldn’t place Margate on the ‘fun tacky’ end of the spectrum. There’s a lot of people hovering over reaching rock bottom hanging around the beach. It’s quite sad to see. I’d be worried my DC would step on a syringe.

This thread is funny.

I love Edinburgh, but I can freely admit that some areas are 'tacky'. Not in the way op is looking for, but the Royal Mile and sadly the Grassmarket are increasingly that way due to the way they have been taken over for tourism.

Some people are so defensive.

If the op had asked for places to avoid because they were tacky, then I would understand the reaction more.

Brighton

AmIPeriOrAreYouJustAnnoying · 25/06/2021 08:47

Swanage in Dorset is pretty cheesy & near the most beautiful sandy beach Studland

beigebrownblue · 25/06/2021 09:05

Another vote for Weston.

'Pontins' in Sand Bay has brilliant prices, and sand bay is not so tacky itself, bring your walking boots.

You can get a number one open topped bus into town which is lovely.
Little known highlights include the museum (lovely for history of seaside places), new restaurant on the front with live music on Saturdays.

And it is a train ride to Bath from town if you want to remain car free.

Divineswirls · 25/06/2021 09:15

I think you should go to the IoW and take yourselves to Blackgang Chine and Robins Hill, (these 2 places you buy a ticket that allows you to go all week and you will want to) the needles, monkey world etc.

You'll both love it so much I promise.

It's a different kind of 'tacky' it's a super cool, super fun Tacky that every kid should experience. So many things to do in a small area

There are lots places to stay I think Shanklin and Ventnor are the tackiest places that I wouldn't personally stay at but they have lots of arcades etc

IoW is just brilliant fun.

I found some pics from my last trip to Bridlington in July 2016

There was a place on Mablethorpe 'front' that sold the most amazing Mr Whippy ice-creams, three colours with a flake for about £1.50. They were huge.

Thanks to everyone on this thread I have decided to finally fulfill my dream of going to Skegness! I was enchanted by the rail poster as a kid.

Margate? Barry Island? I have a real fondness for Southend so maybe you should go back there. Canvey Island also just down the road.

JustDanceAddict · 25/06/2021 11:27

I loved Broadstairs but it’s not tacky - just old fashioned seaside resort.

ElsieMc · 25/06/2021 11:28

Minehead I think has a Butlins with a fair. Its very pretty round there. But do take a look in tripadvisor!

Southport, a bit more upmarket but with beach, fair etc.

In Cornwall, there is a very tacky Victorian exhibition that is quite creepy with all the life size dummies. My gs1 really freaked out. There is also a gloriously old fashioned fair outside. Cannot remember the location so sorry there.

Nicer Cornish seaside locations such as Kennack Sands are also good, generally with free parking in farmers' fields and plenty of nice caravan sites. On the beach there are cafes and old fashioned bucket and spade shops.

Was it Flambards? Victorian street with a horse in cobbles. There's also a ww2 blitz exhibition too

Save up and do an all inclusive in Benidorm next year with full entertainment package.
Brings a whole new meaning to tacky I know I have been there

@postmistressofdibly

“Barry’s continues to remain closed in line with Covid restrictions and will not re-open until the sale process has concluded.”

Kids are distraught! It’s was an institution and also DH and I’s first date 😟

So sad! My youngest was 2 cm short of the big dipper roller-coaster last time we were there and he is not happy that now that he is tall enough it's closed Sad
