To ask for ‘tacky‘ holiday suggestions?!

My DD and I have been on all kinds of holidays together and the ones we have enjoyed the most have been typical English seaside places with arcades and amusements. Blackpool was brilliant and we also enjoyed Clacton on Sea, Butlins and Southend. Can anyone recommend similar destinations in that are on the coast that we might enjoy. Sandy beach is preferable to pebbles! Thanks!

Why call them tacky?Confused

NewLifeInTheSouth · 24/06/2021 11:02

Why not call them tacky? It's just a descriptive word that does a job, same as any other. Same as 'classy' 'cosy' 'snobby' 'tatty' 'kitsch' etc etc.

Eeerrrr · 24/06/2021 11:03

Weston super mare - tat as far as the eye can see - sea warmer and weather more reliable than the rest of the West Country and the east coast.
Loads to see and do nearby - Longleat, Cheddar Gorge, Bath, Exmoor, Wells Cathedral etc

christdoinghisunspecifiedhobby · 24/06/2021 11:14

Craggy Island?

Or Brighton?

VoyageInTheDark · 24/06/2021 11:16

Loved my Skegness caravan holidays as a child! It doesn't seem to have changed much since the 90s either. Lots of tackiness, tat and fun

I don't think the word 'tacky' can in any way be compared to 'classy' or 'cosy'

: not having or exhibiting good taste: such as. a : marked by cheap showiness : gaudy atackypublicity stunt atackyoutfit. b : marked by lack of style : dowdy.

Gluemorgan? - that sounds a bit tacky

HopeHappy · 24/06/2021 11:33

There is a definite difference between fun "tacky" and rough as shite "tacky", so in terms of the former I'd say Great Yarmouth definitely.

At the first mention of "tacky" I though of Camber Sands, but from what I've heard it definitely falls in to the latter category, so perhaps avoid. There's not really much else around there either.

Skeggy has an epic amount of caravan parks (see map screenshot), but I've never been there myself.

Dictionary.com gives a definition of tacky as "gaudy, flashy, showy", which is, I think, exactly what OP is after!

NewLifeInTheSouth · 24/06/2021 11:37

Of course they can. Any adjective that might be used to describe the feel or vibe or style of a place is a perfectly good comparison. They mean different things of course, but that's not the point.

loopyapp · 24/06/2021 11:41

Morecambe!! I live near by and it offeres exactly what you want with the added bonus of stellar views over the cumbrian hills which aren't too far to visit if you fancy.

Lovely bnbs or caravan sites Ocean Edge has a pool!!

Abracadabra12345 · 24/06/2021 11:44

We love Southend and Great Yarmouth and try and get to at least one of them for weekends away most years.

I’m sitting on the beach at Southend right now! I love that you have the boats and emptier beach of Thorpe Bay and the business and fun vibe of the part near the Adventure Island funfair. The waves are almost touching my feet so time to move back

Nothing wrong with a bit of fun tackiness!

PrancerandDancer · 24/06/2021 11:46

I remember Southport being tacky/amazing as a teen. Not sure what it is like now. Walton on the Naze is just up from Clacton its a lot smaller but nice

Amdone123 · 24/06/2021 11:58

@NewLifeInTheSouth, well said. @HopeHappy, exactly.

That's part of the definition, the part that sounds quite inoffensive. Another part is 'not having or exhibiting good taste' and 'marked by lack of style' which doesnt sound very nice at all.

MrsPnut · 24/06/2021 12:07

Definitely Skegvegas, there is nothing that comes close to tackier than her except Blackpool.

We live close enough for a day trip but we usually do Anderby Creek first for the beach because the dogs can go there all year round and then down to Skeg for chips, donuts and amusements or the rides.

storminabuttercup · 24/06/2021 12:10

Skegness for all the flashy lights, arcades, touristy shops, ingoldmells market is a sight to behold

Another vote for Llandudno with Skeggy a close second.

McDreamyDempsey · 24/06/2021 12:20

Ingoldmells 🤢

user1493494961 · 24/06/2021 12:23

Skegness and Mablethorpe have everything on your wish list. I know it's subjective but Llandudno and Barmouth aren't tacky.

WarmSausageTea · 24/06/2021 12:24

Skegness absolutely, but add on Mablethorpe (pirate themed crazy golf!) and Cleethorpes if you can. Lots of brightness and tack, but nice beaches, easy parking, plenty of cheap and cheerful places to stop for drinks and something to eat. You’ve also got places like Sutton on Sea and Anderby Creek in the general area, but from memory, the latter two have much less in the way of facilities and activities.
