To ask for ‘tacky‘ holiday suggestions?!

Mummadeze · 24/06/2021 08:33

My DD and I have been on all kinds of holidays together and the ones we have enjoyed the most have been typical English seaside places with arcades and amusements. Blackpool was brilliant and we also enjoyed Clacton on Sea, Butlins and Southend. Can anyone recommend similar destinations in that are on the coast that we might enjoy. Sandy beach is preferable to pebbles! Thanks!

Cromer in Norfolk has that sort of stuff, but is smaller than some of the others mentioned here. Also Barmouth in North Wales would be an option.

Bluesheep8 · 24/06/2021 10:07

I don't think any of the traditional British seaside places I've visited/lived in are tacky so can't suggest them.

Amdone123 · 24/06/2021 10:07

Am loving this thread.
Firstly because Offenderati has had me laughing and secondly, some brilliant suggestions.
I really want to take my granddaughter away. Blackpool I can't stand, but am loving the other suggestions.

MarianneUnfaithful · 24/06/2021 10:08

Hmmm. I would describe Pontins at Camber as 'filthy'.
Pool was positively murky, hair balls al over the room, the food was disgusting.

But maybe they have had a re-furb and re-boot in the last 5 years.

Also, it isn't near anywhere with a funfair or arcades. But the beach is lovely.

Soz I 'm not a classist twat.

It's nothing to do with being easily offended. I font live in these places. But somone does.“

I do, near Blackpool. Tacky is a polite way of putting it Grin

Burnham on sea
Llandudno

I like both of these. I wouldn't go to Rhyl, although many a childhood weekend spent there, it's died a death.

For traditional holiday destinations. I'd not be keen on "tacky", it's a phrase my ILs would use Grin

Get yourself to Rhyl, love. It’s an education (I like it).

Barry Island, known affectionately as Barrybados locally. Amusement arcades, lovely sandy beach plus a couple of others, funfair, direct train into Cardiff.

Mummadeze · 24/06/2021 10:13

Thanks everyone!!! So many good ideas. Am going to enjoy researching these and then trying them out. Am not going to enter the debate over whether I should have used the word tacky or not but no offence intended. Just didn’t want suggestions of places where McDonald’s isn’t even allowed a red and yellow sign or all the playgrounds are stylish and made of wood. I like bright colours, neon lights and loads of things to do.

Skegness for sure! Unless you already have been here as you mention butlins!?

I really enjoyed weston-super-Mare too and great yarmouth. We always used to stay in a caravan.

Can't wait to take my children to these places when they are a bit older!

riotlady · 24/06/2021 10:19

Whitby is great fun, the Dracula experience certainly fits the tacky bill and lots of arcades and ice cream.

Thefaceofboe · 24/06/2021 10:27

Whitby is great. Lots of ‘tacky’ things to do on the seafront but also great beaches, places to eat and less tacky things to do Grin

stopringingme · 24/06/2021 10:27

Skegness has every bit of tackiness you could ever dream of !
Stay at Butlins and visit Ingoldmells market for tacky tat and with a rollercoaster going overhead.
And it has every kind of takeaway you could ever want.

Biffbaff · 24/06/2021 10:40

Skegness for sure. The pirate themed crazy golf is amazing!

Comeondelicious · 24/06/2021 10:42

Douglas, Isle of man, eat on the steam packet ferry across for ultimate tack!! Confused

“Barry’s continues to remain closed in line with Covid restrictions and will not re-open until the sale process has concluded.”

Kids are distraught! It’s was an institution and also DH and I’s first date 😟

McT123 · 24/06/2021 10:52

Hayling Island.
Sandy beach below the high tide mark.
Funland Adventure Park
Boat trips to see seals etc.
Great place for safe bike rides.
Cafes, pubs etc etc

Sorry! Phone not doing what I want it to! Was replying to @0ntheg0again.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 24/06/2021 10:54

I have no suggestions but I am going to steal offenderati. Thanks PP who said it!

BrilliantBetty · 24/06/2021 10:55

Weymouth! Lovely sandy beach, sweet little harbour. All the entertainment stuff but it's not 'too' tacky. Think there's also an aquarium and a town centre with lots of shops.

Plus it's a nice opportunity to see Dorset, the Jurassic coast is always worth a visit, it's beautiful. You could visit Lulworth Cove for an afternoon

NewLifeInTheSouth · 24/06/2021 10:55

Bognor Regis.

Then defo head over to Hayling island and 'Funland'. Portsmouth is nearby with Gunwharf for outlet shopping and meals out etc.
NewLifeInTheSouth · 24/06/2021 10:57

Actually Broadstairs is lovely, very bucket and spade, candy floss and donkeys with some amusements and cheap cafes but not hugely tacky and not rough, just pleasantly old school, seaside fun for the masses. Lovely beach.

nongnangning · 24/06/2021 10:57

Walton-on-the-Naze. And for a bonus point if you get tired of fish and chips, the pier etc you can just go next door to Frinton for a bit of posh.
