Grey hair - with pics

OK so I'm looking some advice.

Attached is a pic of my hair 3 weeks post root colouring at the hairdressers which cost £60. Obviously I would love to be able to manage the upkeep of this by having a full time stylist and disposable income at my finger tips, but I don't Sad

I am a young (ish) looking 38 Yr old. I sometimes get ID for over 25 places etc. Most people are surprised that I'm 38 and most would put me at 28 ish without this being a braggy one!

WIBU to bit the bullet to go grey. I'm not talking about just leaving it to go naturally and looking two tone for god knows how long. I'm talking about bleaching it up and dying it a funky grey with the intent to then let it do what it wants?

Am I being silly to even consider this? I'm not sure I could pull off a funky grey...

Has anyone ever done this and pulled it off successfully? I follow some 'Greys' on Instagram but they are properly glam, whereas I am less so Grin

YABU - keep with the brown & 3wk upkeep
YANBU - bleach it up then go silver grey

Thanks

Incredible Silver Ladies on here..

Respect 💕

MangosteenSoda · 23/06/2021 03:42

I don’t think your hair is grey enough to pull it off. You will end up with the same problem, but with brown roots.

Meruem · 23/06/2021 06:17

I love all the pics posted, you ladies look amazing. I’m also going full on grey and one thing I have noticed is how it’s improved the condition of my hair. When I was dying it, it always went frizzy and looked lifeless. Now I’ve stopped it’s smooth and sleek. I’d far rather have grey hair in good condition than coloured hair that requires hours of work to make it look presentable! As others have said, the freedom of never having to worry about roots is a huge bonus too.

I’m 51 and genuinely don’t care if someone thinks I look 40, 50 or 60! It has no effect on my life at all.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 23/06/2021 06:26

@NancyPickford

I stopped dyeing my hair a very dark brown, and this was what was underneath. The freedom from having to touch up the roots regrowth every three weeks is fantastic.
Wow! Is that your natural hair colour untouched? It's absolutely bloody gorgeous!
Cocolapew · 23/06/2021 06:31

I'm not saying I look younger with grey hair but I don't look older, no matter that there are always posters on these threads telling me that I must do . But I definitely look better with grey hair. Its multitonal, its shiny and it's healthy. It also compliments my skin tone.

Chimchar · 23/06/2021 06:47

Reading this thread with great interest....I too have a white millipede after about 3 weeks of doing a home box dye.

My plan was to bleach and then dye it grey! Reading this has scuppered my plan somewhat. BlushConfused

I'm not brave enough to let it grow and not prepared for any regular upkeep.... I shall keep with the box dye for a bit longer I think!

@Greyhairdontcare1982

Ok so I’m a similar age but made the decision to go grey over 18 months ago. I considered doing what you are thinking about but everything g I read suggested A) it would be just as much of a headache with upkeep as dying my hair was proving to be and B ) the dyed grey was unlikely to look anything like the natural stuff coming through. So I but the bullet and just grew it out. I added highlights throughout and used those to help break up the demarcation line. I used pink and purple temp dyes to funk my hair up a bit to get me over the difficult bits (I know, that sentence alone makes me seem about 30 years older 😂).

Good luck whatever you decide to do. I have genuinely had nothing but positive comments - maybe folk are slagging me behind my back but 🤷🏼‍♀️ I get stopped in public by strangers asking me how I get my hair this colour. My stock answer of a teenage pregnancy and over a decade as a midwife is rarely the answer they are expecting Wink

Your hair is gorgeous 😍
WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 23/06/2021 06:56

I’m loving these silver colours ❤️
I have a big silver streak in my hair which I’ve had since my teens but the rest has stayed dark 😏

Greyhairdontcare1982 · 23/06/2021 08:36

@Chimchar start joining or following some going grey groups on social media, lots of suggestions about how to go grey without too much pain. Mind there’s some absolute militants out there who think there’s only one way to do it but see if you can find a group that has a more free and easy perspective and you’ll get lots of tips. It doesn’t have to be badger stripe or nothing.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/06/2021 08:53

@BearOfEasttown

People don't like to hear grey hair is ageing though, and are in a bizarre state of denial about it.

Weird. confused

And no WAY will someone look younger with grey hair. Anyone who thinks that is deluded.

How rude and dismissive. You are also very wrong.

Blossomtoes · 23/06/2021 08:58

Wonderful hair @NancyPickford. There’s some serious glamour on this thread.

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 23/06/2021 09:02

I cut my hair off at the beginning of lockdown myself. I got some hair scissors and just went for it. It was VERY short as I had uncoloured roots and cut as much as I could off. Surprisingly it didn’t look horrendous. I got it cut again when the first lockdown ended and have been fully grey ever since. It’s so much easier and less expensive to maintain. I use a purple shampoo every week. I’ve been colouring it most of my life as I started to go grey at 25. I just can’t cope with the maintenance of coloured hair any longer. At one stage I was blonde but didn’t think it suited me.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 23/06/2021 09:05

@BearOfEasttown

Not always true. My mum is 67 and genuinely looks younger with her natural grey hair than she did with her dyed brown her, which she had right up until lockdown number one.

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 23/06/2021 09:07

I should add I saw a photo of myself on my phone ore lockdown and just thought how awful the coloured hair looked compared to now. It just looked false.

NancyPickford · 23/06/2021 09:07

Youvegottenminuteslynn yes, all natural, no dye or treatment of any kind. I was surprised as I’d been dyeing it dark for decades, and all that time it was quietly turning silver, unbeknownst to me.

moanyhole · 23/06/2021 09:11

It can suit some people but not everyone.
I close friend in her 50s decided to embrace the grey and it has really aged her. Others though it can really suit

QueenBee52 · 23/06/2021 12:17

random question

what if your hair does not grow.. think decades of iron deficiencies B12 Folic etc..

so hair has literally not grown for nearly 10 years...

How do you, get the hair tints out of the hair and turn grey without cutting the much treasured ONLY hair you have....

Does hair tint eventually turn Grey 🤔 or not 😩

asking for a friend 👀

QueenBee52 · 23/06/2021 12:17

p.s. iron deficiencies etc finally resolved but hair just does not grow.... ever

BearOfEasttown · 23/06/2021 13:26

@BimiBluebell

OP, all I can say is that you are only 38 (I wish I were 38!), so you will look young and beautiful whatever colour your hair is.

@WorraLiberty

That's a lovely thing to say (honestly it is) but how can you mean that?

Not all 38 year olds look young and obviously not all 38 year olds (or any age for that matter) look beautiful no matter what their hair colour is.

The OP is asking for advice and has mentioned that most people she meets, think she is 10 years younger than she actually is.

Her hair might well look lovely if she lets it go grey but it's extremely unlikely anyone is going to mistake her for a 28 year old.

This. ^ If anything, she will look 5-10 years older than 38 with grey hair. Sorry, but she really will. She will most definitely not look 10 years younger than 38 with grey hair!

And unlike a few others here, I don't think grey hair on women (especially under 60,) is 'absolutely bloody gorgeous.' It's ageing,

And as has proven many times on here, women on mumsnet are DESPERATE for people to think they look much younger than their age. So I am baffled that women on here would 'embrace their grey' (when they are under the age of 60.) Because going grey will make them look older.

And despite protestations from several posters, of how young this person, and that person looks with grey hair; no they don't, they really don't.

BearOfEasttown · 23/06/2021 13:26

@Vicliz24

I think you look like an attractive lady on that pic. (Posted 23.15 yesterday-Tuesday.) But I'm sorry, you do look older than 53 (to me.) I would have said closer to 58-60. And the grey hair is probably part of the reason.

Greyhairdontcare1982 · 23/06/2021 13:50

Are you enjoying making people feeling rubbish about themselves Bear?

I think some grey hair can look ageing, I also think some dyed hair can look ageing. I think it’s a very individual personal decision and I don’t get why people who don’t choose to go grey are so determined to criticise the choice of those of us who do.

I’m 38. The almost 18 year old daughter puts paid to any suggestions that I’m a wee slip of a girl, the frown lines on my forehead bely the idea that I’m still in the first flush of youth and my ability to not give a shit indicates I probably have experience on my side. All of that stuff would still be true no matter what colour my hair was. The fact is people rarely look much younger than their age no matter how good they look. I happen to think a face full of makeup, big eyelashes and plumped up lips ages people horrendously but no one really cares what I think Wink

QueenBee52 · 23/06/2021 13:55

also think some dyed hair can look ageing.

it certainly can....

hence Im considering all the avail options.. go grey the natural way or get help to go grey faster ☺️

You look absolutely amazing
CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/06/2021 14:06

@BearOfEasttown Thank you for telling me I am deluded about how I look. It’s a remarkable insight from someone who has never actually seen me. Luckily it is you who is deluded, as I couldn’t give a flying fuck what you think. I sincerely hope no one else does either. You might want to take time to consider why how someone else looks is so important to you and why you persist in trying to make people feel bad about themselves. Grey hair can be “fixed”, it seems your attitude cannot.

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 23/06/2021 14:08

You really do suit it Greyhairdontcare1982, it looks in great condition too.
