To think that a super king won’t be that different to a king

Please help settle an argument with DH. If you changed from a King to Super King, did you actually really notice the difference? Also, would you recommend a Super king?

Yabu - a super king is awesome
Yanbu - stick with a king

We have a king but have stayed in super kings in hotels. We call them "appointment beds" because you have to make an appointment to see your DP because it's so far.

Australian bed sizes are a bit different. I think our queen is a UK king, and our king is a UK superking.

I've just downsized from a king to a queen. Queen is teeny and taking a bit to get used to. I haven't rolled out of it yet, but I've rolled out of queens in the past.

I had the king for 20 odd years and didn't have the bedding issues noted above. Still using king sized doona and the king sized sheets. King sized bedding is really common here IME.

IME the difference in size is noticeable. I downsized as the room wasn't big enough. The queen works better in the room.

@Sunshinegirl82 do you remember what that bed from IKEA was called?

Blueskytoday06 · 20/06/2021 22:36

Super king is the only way.

ForkedIt · 20/06/2021 22:37

You can get super king duvet sets / fitted sheets from IKEA and Amazon! Confused

MayorGundersonsDogRufus · 20/06/2021 22:38

Super king is so much better than king size.

Llamasally · 20/06/2021 22:40

Glad to have stumbled across this as have been having the same conversations - thanks MN for settling Grin

Sunshinegirl82 · 20/06/2021 22:41

@Trevsadick

It's called Brimnes it's this one:

www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/brimnes-bed-frame-w-storage-and-headboard-white-luroey-s59124616/

We couldn't fit a super king and bedside tables in without it being really cluttered, the headboard is brilliant! We have lamps, books, drinks, sorted!

tillytoodles1 · 20/06/2021 22:42

I live on my own and sleep in a kingsize bed. A super king would make no difference to me, the bloody cat would still sleep on.me.

RandomMess · 20/06/2021 22:43

One up from Emperor is separate rooms - utterly awesome 😂

Krook · 20/06/2021 22:43

SK all the way.
We didn't buy ours until the children were grown and I could weep over the extra hours of sleep I could have had if we had swapped our double for a SK sooner.
Will never go back!

Bbq1 · 20/06/2021 22:45

I love oyr Superking. It's amazing

Freezingtoocold · 20/06/2021 22:45

We had one in the hotel for our honeymoon. We saved and bought one as soon as we could afford it when we got back. We have 2 double duvets. Have slept many a time with 3 in the bed when children have nightmares and if my husband is away for work quite often my 2 will sleep in with me. Do not be in the middle though, too hot!!!

We now have two separate single mattresses on ours as well as single sheets and duvets. No wrestling with massive sheets and duvet covers needed.

We have different types of mattresses and duvets. We can also choose when to wash our own side of the bed. Handy with my peri night sweats!

And if you're feeling really petty, you can just make your own side of the bed 🤣🤣

TicTacHoh · 20/06/2021 22:48

Super king all the way!!

chesterelly · 20/06/2021 22:50

Emperor- it's like you're in the same bed without even being in the same postcode- bliss!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/06/2021 22:52

I really hoped this would be to do with an actual monarch!

But in answer to the question I love my super long size bed!

HazyDaisy123456 · 20/06/2021 22:53

SK is amazing. Might be slightly more limited in bedding choices but if you have the room get one.

The only downside is, changing remaking the bed which seems harder work but otherwise would totally recommend.

WiddlinDiddlin · 20/06/2021 22:53

The downside is the bedding is more expensive..

We have a superking and our own duvets.

Currently i have a thin kingsize duvet, he still has a thicker feather double.

In winter I have a feather kingsize and the thin one as well.

He wants to sleep with the duvet gently placed over his thighs...

I want to sleep with both duvets right up to my eyeballs, and I don't want to inhale his farts.

This has also meant neither of us needs a superkingsize duvet which is good as those are expensive, a pain in the arse to wash and nigh on impossible to get in a duvet cover without declaring all out war, getting lost inside and needing a SAR party to find you and extract you three days later...

Also we can fit four medium dogs as well as ourselves and still aren't squashed.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/06/2021 22:58

We have single duvets and a bedspread to make the bed look neat in the day when it's made.

FeatheredHope · 20/06/2021 22:59

Next does decent sheets etc in super king at very reasonable prices.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/06/2021 23:00

Viceroy bedding is very good, especially their Egyptian cotton range and really reasonable.

HazyDaisy123456 · 20/06/2021 23:01

We have a SK quilt & quilt cover couldn’t be doing with messing about with separate quilts.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 20/06/2021 23:06

We upgraded from a double a few months ago and the novelty still hasn’t worn off. Best decision ever.

However, the downsides-

  • I get cold and would’ve previously just put my freezing feet up against DH’s furnace of a torso to warm up. He’s too far away now so I have to get up to get a pair of socks.
  • Bedding is £££. Bedding is the one thing I’m happy to spend a bit extra on, but the cost of a decent topper, feather/winter and wool/summer duvets plus two sets of bedding adds another couple of hundred quid onto the cost of the upgrade.
  • Changing the duvet cover. Fuck me. Pretty sure the 13th labour of Hercules would’ve been him having to do a full change of a super king bed.
