Care label says ‘mother can do it’

Raging but being laughed off by others when I’ve shown it so I’d like opinions please! School uniform care labels says ‘or give it to your mother she knows how to do it’.

If it would have been funny as “give it to your parents; they know how to do it” then it should have said that. If it wouldn’t, it has to rely on sexist stereotypes to be “funny” and therefore should never have been printed.

Chikapu · 20/06/2021 13:31

Is it unacceptable to be upset at the constant normalisation of sexist stereotypes? What about if it was racism? What if the label said, give it to a black person to wash? Would it be ok with you to be raging at that or would that also be acceptable and no big deal?

Whats the point of whataboutism?

Beannag · 20/06/2021 13:31

On a school uniform it's pretty shit, I know lots of people think it's pEaRl ClUtChInG and it can be cut off, but not every child has a mum, and why doesn't it say parent?

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 20/06/2021 13:31

@MotherCanDoIt

No a school approved uniform provider as of 2021
I see what they're trying to do (it briefly raised a smile, I'll admit). But you're right and the fact that it's the school uniform provider would have me take it to the governors because it's not what we should be teaching young people these days.
cocoloco987 · 20/06/2021 13:31

It's not actually serious though. It's a joke. A shit one, yes but I don't think anyone will take it as anything but so for that 'raging' seems a bit much!

khakiandcoral · 20/06/2021 13:31

@AlexaShutUp

We all have different senses of humour and for some people casual sexism isn't funny.

Yes exactly. Especially when it's aimed at children who might not even realise that it's supposed to be ironic.

then maybe... TEACH them?

What a world it would be if parents could teach their children that there are different opinion, and various sense of humour around, some you don't agree with, hey...

Beannag · 20/06/2021 13:31

To clarify as that was insensitive, not everyone has a mum who can wash their uniform

PurpleyBlue · 20/06/2021 13:32

@SinkGirl

How are nearly HALF OF PEOPLE saying this is okay?

I despair.

I am surprised by how many people are ok with this. I'd cut the label out OP.
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/06/2021 13:32

The label actually says SHE KNOWS HOW TO DO IT

Not MOTHER CAN DO IT

So if either of my DC asked , I could tell them 30c wash , xyz powder , hang up eyc.

But obviously if they're school aged I guess I'd be washing them anyway Hmm

Fifilorax · 20/06/2021 13:32

@AlexaShutUp so you did do some of her washing for her so the label would ring true no?

minisoksmakehardwork · 20/06/2021 13:32

As a mother, I would smile at this and see the funny side. However; I do agree it is not appropriate.

I have family who lost their mum at a very young age for whom this would be a problem. Their dad has done everything for them since the youngest was just 6 weeks old.

I work with children who have been removed from their families. Whose parents pick them up and put them down on a whim for contact visits. They would be devastated to have that reminder.

In this day and age, it's stepping over them line so I'm with OP even if I do smile at in in the context of MY family situation.

Yes exactly. And the child can read it, it's not like they don't ever read random things like crisp packets/cereal boxes/signs on buses.
maddiemookins16mum · 20/06/2021 13:33

As ridiculous as it is, they’re right.

PurpleyBlue · 20/06/2021 13:33

It also excludes children with two male parents, one male parent, looked after in Foster care, by grandparents etc.

khakiandcoral · 20/06/2021 13:34

I am shocked and annoyed by people trying to ban everything and anything they don't agree with.

AlexaShutUp · 20/06/2021 13:34

No.

This.

As a child of bereavement this would cut deep.

Fifilorax · 20/06/2021 13:35

@AlexaShutUp well it does. You’re her mother, you did some of her washing. You knew how to do her washing when she didn’t. So the label is correct

BashfulClam · 20/06/2021 13:36

I think it’s funny and I think it’s aimed at the parent. Give it to the kids grandmother she’ll know how to sort it out.

Godmothered · 20/06/2021 13:37

Not everyone has a mother. Not really a joke for those kids is it.

khakiandcoral · 20/06/2021 13:37

I am terribly sorry for children who lost their parents, but are we supposed to remove any reference to parents, mums and dads, to protect them?

Shall we also remove all reference to siblings for all the children who don't have any or have lost theirs?

Shall we remove the word "parent" from all school communication too?

AlexaShutUp · 20/06/2021 13:38
@AlexaShutUp well it does. You’re her mother, you did some of her washing. You knew how to do her washing when she didn’t. So the label is correct
Her father knew how to do her washing as well. Why didn't it say to ask him? Or a parent?

It's depressing how many people are happy to accept this sort of crap.

MyCatHatesEverybody · 20/06/2021 13:38

Is this in the UK? Just wondering as they've spelt "color" the American way.

PurpleyBlue · 20/06/2021 13:38

khakiandcoral it's a school uniform so yes, I'd argue it should be as inclusive as possible, there is no need for any mention of anyone on the washing instructions.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 20/06/2021 13:38

i have seen that before, it is funny folks
