Care label says ‘mother can do it’

Raging but being laughed off by others when I’ve shown it so I’d like opinions please! School uniform care labels says ‘or give it to your mother she knows how to do it’.

@minisoksmakehardwork

As a mother, I would smile at this and see the funny side. However; I do agree it is not appropriate.

I have family who lost their mum at a very young age for whom this would be a problem. Their dad has done everything for them since the youngest was just 6 weeks old.

I work with children who have been removed from their families. Whose parents pick them up and put them down on a whim for contact visits. They would be devastated to have that reminder.

In this day and age, it's stepping over them line so I'm with OP even if I do smile at in in the context of MY family situation.

This.

It’s one thing to have edgy humorous things on trendy brands that people can choose to buy, but this is a school uniform provider, it’s not appropriate to be jokey in this setting.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 20/06/2021 13:59

any woman who truly finds this funny should look up "internalised misogyny"

if you smile at first, then you think "hang on, wtaf?! did they just threw casual sexism at mothers? this surely isn't a good message" you are alright

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/06/2021 13:59
@Gertie75 I would wholeheartedly agree normally, partly why I’ve posted. It’s really incensed me, I’m normally fine with jokes and am not easily offended. I’m wondering if it’s because it’s directed at my DC rather than me
It's one of many daft messages in clothing care labels.

Have a Google, have a coffee

Take care of yourself

Made on Earth

Keep away from fire, especially when wearing

10O% cotton
You can dance if you want to

Don't tumble dry
Don't slap pandas

Hi! I'm really impressed you found this label

Can be washed by both men and women

I have dental pain

Do not feed after midnight

Squillions of them. In lots of clothing ranges

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/06/2021 14:02

@MotherCanDoIt

I am taken aback at how many (I’m presuming mostly) women are finding this funny. How can you not see the damage this causes?

@Naaaaah spot on thank you!!!

It says "ask your mother, she knows how to do it"

Which is usually true. It's a comment on the sexism of household tasks.

It doesn't say "give it to your mother to do" which would be sexist bollocks.

roobicoobi · 20/06/2021 14:02

They have spelt colour incorrectly....

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/06/2021 14:03

My apologies, it does indeed say "give it to your mother"! I'm on my phone, only saw half the label.

Sexist bollocks.

But not all of them are!

Bagamoyo1 · 20/06/2021 14:04

@roobicoobi

I think it’s the American spelling . Probably made in China where they tend to use American spellings
Rewis · 20/06/2021 14:04

I might laugh if it was an adult 3XL shirt from a company that is branded at 50+ yo men. But for school uniform? Fuck that.

I have a shirt that says "keep away from fire. Especially when wearing it."

roobicoobi · 20/06/2021 14:04

It's also missing the symbols

AlexaShutUp · 20/06/2021 14:05

It's interesting that some posters are more concerned about the American spelling than the sexist message.

roobicoobi · 20/06/2021 14:05

Come on now. Lots of clothes are made in China for the UK and have correctly spelt labels.

roobicoobi · 20/06/2021 14:06

@AlexaShutUp

It's interesting that's what you have taken from my raising the spelling. Say no more.

PinkSkyBlue · 20/06/2021 14:07

Seen it before, still find it funny 😄

hulahooper2 · 20/06/2021 14:09

Do you not have a sense of humour?

Gosh. No wonder Mrs Brown's Boys is on series 73.
khakiandcoral · 20/06/2021 14:10

Or just laugh, and throw it to your partner telling your kids "your dad knows too, he'll show you".

But it would be a waste of a good opportunity to be offended Grin

You don't have to find it funny. You have no right to dictate what others can laugh at.

Bagamoyo1 · 20/06/2021 14:10

Would it be funny if you bought a product for straightening very curly hair, and the instructions said “ask a black person, they’ll know how to do it”? No, of course it wouldn’t. So why is sexism OK?

AlexaShutUp · 20/06/2021 14:10

@hulahooper2

Do you not have a sense of humour?
I have a sense of humour but I don't find sexist jokes particularly amusing. You obviously do.

Do you like racist and homopobic jokes too, or do you draw the line at good old-fashioned sexism?

Feedingthebirds1 · 20/06/2021 14:11

It's the give it to your mother, not the she knows how to do it. It's not said, but it hangs in the air as give it to your mother to do it.

MustardRose · 20/06/2021 14:12

@Reallybadidea

Yes obviously it's a joke, but it's only funny if you think reinforcing sexist stereotypes is harmless. I don't think it is.
Spot on.
khakiandcoral · 20/06/2021 14:12

you can play the "racist" card for everything. This is not racist, so we are not talking about racism.

Heartofglass12345 · 20/06/2021 14:14

One of the mums in my sons class killed herself last year, the child was 4. I don't think she would find it very funny.
Sexist, as most things seem to be nowadays Hmm

Bagamoyo1 · 20/06/2021 14:14

@khakiandcoral

I’m not “playing the racist card”. I’m just trying to explain why jokes based around unpleasant stereotypes aren’t funny, especially when they’re on something that the consumer doesn’t have the option to avoid ie school uniform.
AlexaShutUp · 20/06/2021 14:15

@khakiandcoral

I'm not playing any cardsHmm. I'm just trying to understand where people draw the line as to what constitutes acceptable humour and what does not.

Though tbh, anyone who talks about "playing the racist card" in any context is making their position on that issue fairly clear, so perhaps I don't need to ask.

Such a depressing thread.

YellowMonday · 20/06/2021 14:16

Yet another example of systemic sexism. I'm so over this.
