Care label says ‘mother can do it’

Raging but being laughed off by others when I’ve shown it so I’d like opinions please! School uniform care labels says ‘or give it to your mother she knows how to do it’.

H&M has some care labels that say ‘have fun washing’ on them. They’ve been doing it for years.

khakiandcoral · 20/06/2021 13:19

@DaisyWaldron

That's rubbish. Bad in terms of sexism, horrible for kids who don't have a mother, or who have a mother who can't care for her child in that way.
the level of outrage and the clutchign at straws is always more funny than the actual joke 😂
Toomuchspinning · 20/06/2021 13:20

Oh fucking hell.

It’s funny, I giggled.

transformandriseup · 20/06/2021 13:20

Surely the jokes on the wearer if they don't know how to wash it themselves.

I think it's funny and I don't pay attention to washing instructions anyway.

Catlover77 · 20/06/2021 13:21

It is not remotely funny

Naaaaah · 20/06/2021 13:23

@Chikapu

Raging? Get a grip.
Is it unacceptable to be upset at the constant normalisation of sexist stereotypes? What about if it was racism? What if the label said, give it to a black person to wash? Would it be ok with you to be raging at that or would that also be acceptable and no big deal?
Chloemol · 20/06/2021 13:24

It’s funny. Get a life

RocheLobe · 20/06/2021 13:24

Everyone knows it’s a joke, the OP doesn’t need to be told that. The debate is over whether it’s funny or not. I don’t think it is, this kind of thing is tired and stale

So? That doesn't name women as the sole person to ask.
PurpleyBlue · 20/06/2021 13:25

I would send this to Everyday Sexism OP

If that's your idea of humour then I think it's fair to say that you're the one in need of a life.
Naaaaah · 20/06/2021 13:25

@20viona

That's brilliant 😂
You have a very low bar.
AlexaShutUp · 20/06/2021 13:26

@Fifilorax

So let's just reinforce those sexist stereotypes with our kids so that we can perpetuate the patriarchy? But most women choose to be primary care givers to their children. I went part time to take on the bulk of childcare and chores when I had DC. My DP carried on working full time. This is the case for near enough every woman I know. I wasn’t forced to become primary care giver but as my DC’s mother, I wanted to be
Well, we could argue the toss about whether you made that choice in a vacuum or in the context of a patriarchal society. Either way, that's your choice and other women will make different choices.

I have a daughter and I absolutely don't want her growing up with the notion that womem have the default responsibility for all domestic drudge work. She is worth so much more than that.

We all have different senses of humour and for some people casual sexism isn't funny.
BikeRunSki · 20/06/2021 13:27

Oddballs underwear put this on their labels too. I started a post about it a year or so ago, and was told I had no sense of humour, but I totally with you @MotherCanDoIt

SoupDragon · 20/06/2021 13:27

Care label says ‘mother can do it’

Except it doesn't. It says she knows how to, which is probably right. Whether she does it or not is entirely up to her.

Fifilorax · 20/06/2021 13:27

@AlexaShutUp presumably you don’t do any of the washing for your DC then?

MotherCanDoIt · 20/06/2021 13:27

I am taken aback at how many (I’m presuming mostly) women are finding this funny. How can you not see the damage this causes?

@Naaaaah spot on thank you!!!

Yes exactly. Especially when it's aimed at children who might not even realise that it's supposed to be ironic.

MotherCanDoIt · 20/06/2021 13:29

@BikeRunSki I’m sad this isn’t the only case, did you raise it with the school?

No, she does her own. But before she did it herself, both DH and I used to do it for her. Having a penis doesn't render you incapable of using a washing machine?

Whyhello · 20/06/2021 13:29

I’d be more pissed off about the misspelling.

Guavaf1sh · 20/06/2021 13:29

Come on Dougal lighten up!!

khakiandcoral · 20/06/2021 13:30

You don't have to find it funny, you are allowed to be "raging".

It doesn't matter, does it? ~Others can laugh about it. You don't get to police what others are laughing about 🤷

SinkGirl · 20/06/2021 13:30

How are nearly HALF OF PEOPLE saying this is okay?

I despair.
