Punished at school for saying ‘flipping heck’

At pick up yesterday the teacher asked me to wait behind for a minute as my 8yo Ds had been put on red (they have a traffic light system- start on green, if really good go to silver and then gold, if naughty go to orange and then red. Get on red twice in a term and you have to go to the headmaster’s office). Ds has always been really good, he’s incredibly shy, hates drawing attention to himself and normally just bobs along on green every week.

He looked mortified when he came out and the teacher told me he’d had to go straight onto red for bad language during PE. Ds tried to say “I only said” but teacher interrupted and said “please don’t say it again, you’ll only get yourself into more trouble”. Anyway, he apologised, we walked home and that was that.

I asked him what he’d said and why when we got home and he told me he missed a goal in PE and said “oh, flipping heck”. I asked him if he was sure that was what he’d said, that he hadn’t said the F word but he was adamant he hadn’t and was in tears of frustration at this point as he kept trying to tell the teacher what he’d said but she just kept telling her not to repeat it.

I messaged the teacher on the school app and said “Ds is very sorry for upsetting you today. He’s adamant that he only said ‘flipping heck’ though and wanted me just tell you that he would never say anything ruder than that either at school or at home”. Teacher immediately messaged back to say that she was aware that was what he’d said, it was more the tone that he’d said it in that she was disappointed about (which wasn’t what she’d told me at pick up) and that I needed to ensure that he was aware that language of that type is not acceptable at school.

Is ‘flipping heck’ rude? I say it all the time and I’m certain that is where he’s picked it up from but I’ve never told him not to say it. I thought it was just a nonsense exclamation.

The teacher confirmed that she heard “Flipping heck” and nothing else

BreatheAndFocus · 19/06/2021 17:41

Idiotic! YANBU. Flipping heck is used instead of swearing. It’s a way to let off pressure without using offensive words.

As an example, one of my friends says “Sugar” instead of saying “Shit”. Just because I know the ‘sugar’ is a substitute for a ruder word doesn’t mean she’s being offensive by saying “Sugar!”. If we’re going to punish children for euphemisms, where will it end? The whole point of them is to avoid offence!

I wouldn’t be happy with my DC being punished for that. Might as well just swear if they going to put children on Red for using a mild substitute. 🙄

amylou8 · 19/06/2021 17:42

Teacher is being completely ridiculous. I think you're right that she misheard but doesn't want to back down.

ufucoffee · 19/06/2021 17:42

But you weren't there when he said it. As the teacher said it was the tone in which it was said.

porkincider · 19/06/2021 17:44

ufucoffee she only said it was the tone though after I’d confirmed that he’d only said flipping heck. At pick up she told me he’d been put straight on red for bad language.

I probably would have said when I was speaking to her about how it was just 'flipping heck' that I had spoken to my son and assured him that it was fine and that of course there was nothing wrong with saying flipping heck. I would have told her not to worry as I had explained that his teacher had just made a mistake and he wasn't to worry about it.

Ilovesandwiches · 19/06/2021 17:49

I work with children and I wouldn’t encourage the use of flipping heck at school, so would have spoken to him about it but I do feel this reaction was over the top

cansu · 19/06/2021 17:49

In my school it would have been a simple telling off but there is also the possibility that she thought he had said Fucking hell and also there is an outside chance that he did actually say this but is back pedalling like crazy as he knows he is in deep trouble. Personally, I would draw a line under it. He has apologized and that's that. Move on would be my stance.

Abraxan · 19/06/2021 17:50

@MorriseysGladioli

I think crap is much worse than flipping 'eck!
I agree and it would definitely not be seen as the same level here. Flippin' 'eck is a common phrase used in Sheffield.

Whilst I would probably ask a child in class not to say it, I wouldn't 'put them straight on red' for doing so. Should note that we don't use such a system at our school anyway.

They'd get asked not to say it in school. It wouldn't be deemed any more serious or need any next stage reprimand or discipline.

DysmalRadius · 19/06/2021 17:51

Complaining about the tone implies that children aren't allowed to express annoyance at school. Is that really the case?

RockPaperScissorLizardSpock · 19/06/2021 17:51

I’m exactly the same! I say all those things you said, but I don’t swear.

ElBandito · 19/06/2021 17:54

Flipping heck was the phrase used on Grange Hill on BBC in days when language on tv was far more heavily policed than it is now. It is not swearing and definitely not worthy of going straight to red. Teacher is daft.

RockPaperScissorLizardSpock · 19/06/2021 17:54

Sorry, I was meant to add a quote from a PP (which I cannot find now!)
I say flipping heck a lot, and I don’t swear, and never have done.

SaltAndVinegarSandwiches · 19/06/2021 17:54

Wow flipping heck is what I say to avoid the rude words (along with shoot, and blooming heck).

Bimblybomeyelash · 19/06/2021 17:57

It can’t be a stand in for ‘fucking hell’ if you don’t even know ‘fucking hell’. It’s just an expression of exasperation. It’s not like they are saying ‘hucking fell’ or ‘fecking hell’ and trying to get away with it! What is an acceptable thing to say if flipping heck isn’t?

notacooldad · 19/06/2021 17:57

I honestly don't see it as a problem phrase.
I think it is a good to get into the habit of saying ' flippin' heck' as as a way to express disbelief or frustration rather than any other swear words.

What expressions would others like their children to use to let out anger, surprise or frustration. Children still feel these emotions.

I know ds whi to be fair is 21 and not 8 still says Blimey but he has got that off his dad!
Anyway where we live 'flippin heck' covers nearly everything from wonderment, annoyance, happy surprises , frustration.
Its a goid solid all-rounder!!

sadperson16 · 19/06/2021 17:57

Nobody would "encourage" a child to say Flippin Heck.
Its just a daft , harmless phrase.

saraclara · 19/06/2021 17:58

Yep. No way would I have got away with "crap" in the corner of the East Midlands where I grew up, and everyone from 5-105 said flippin' 'eck. I wouldn't have been allowed "oh God" either, despite or family not being religious.

I'm going to guess that the totally bemused on this thread, who think the teacher is totally unreasonable, are also from that neck of the woods and points north.

a1poshpaws · 19/06/2021 17:59

Utterly ridiculous teacher reaction. I'd go to the Head since you've got nowhere with her, and tell him/her that you consider it a total over-reaction to an inoffensive phrase that's in common use in both your home and the wider community. Tell them straight out that they've rocked your son's confidence and ask them if they'd prefer he said "fuck it" next time?

fellrunner85 · 19/06/2021 17:59

Well flippin' eck, I honestly didn't know people thought flipping heck was a substitute for fucking hell. Round these parts (Yorkshire) it's a polite exclamation.

For example, I would cheerily say to my gran, "flippin eck its hot today" or similar. I would - and probably have - used it as a friendly term while chatting to my kids' teachers Grin

Absolutely nowhere near "crap" on the sweary scale. And not even as coarse as "fart" IMO Grin

0None0 · 19/06/2021 17:59

@porkincider

supersecretsquirrels but it’s not ‘fucking hell’
But actually it is ‘fucking hell’ so I think the teacher was right
Classica · 19/06/2021 18:01

But actually it is ‘fucking hell’ so I think the teacher was right

Confused

Actually it isn't.

1forAll74 · 19/06/2021 18:02

Do they actually do any kind of teaching at schools these days. How ridiculous to hear things like this.!

DietrichandDiMaggio · 19/06/2021 18:09

I work in year 6 and flipping heck is something that a teacher or TA might say to one of our children, e.g. "Flipping Heck Jack, what have you got in there -it looks as if it weighs a ton!" to a child struggling with an obviously heavy bag.

DinosaurDiana · 19/06/2021 18:10

Flipping heck and chuffing heck are not swearing.
They are Northern exclamations.
