A close family member playing for Scotland tonight, been sitting at the edge of our seats all night. He said not to celebrate, not a big deal. AIBU to think it is a big fucking deal that they have a point over England!? I am buzzing, but told to calm down. AIBU to think this is actually amazing and a step in the right direction??

@Babdoc maybe have a think about why we feel like that? We get England and 1966 rammed firm
Our throats every two years (Euros and World Cup) the reason we are celebrating a draw is it gets us 1 point. After the match it was all
about England and Scotland wasn’t mentioned. We are sick of having a dubious win 55 years ago mentioned constantly!!

BashfulClam · 19/06/2021 10:28

@buffyajp because we got a point from it thats why we are celebrating a draw! The majority of us were hopefully but prepared to be beaten!

SueSaid · 19/06/2021 10:32

'No, it was a single example used to back up the claim that the whole of the UK would support Scotland - which is nonsense.'

OK you're right, not the 'whole' of the UK. There will be ignorant twats all over the UK correct. The point being many English people would support any other nation in the UK. Why are some Scotnats so angry and bitter about the English?

Yep!

I was trying to manage my teenagers expectations so he wouldn't be too gutted at a loss. When we were discussing our predictions my partner said head says we will get beat but my heart says otherwise. And that sums it up for me and shows sometimes it's the heart that wins out

randomsabreuse · 19/06/2021 10:38

Plenty of English people have a bit of an anyone but England attitude when it comes to football. Generally England underperform as a team and play as a group of individuals with a tendency to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory...

I've always preferred more flowing play and love an underdog victory or a big team going out early!

MaMelon · 19/06/2021 10:40

Because they’re a-holes - in the same way that Little Englanders/Englishnats are. I’m English btw, lived in Scotland for many years. I know how it works. Neither type of nationalist has the moral high ground.

I do think that's what's wrong with the English team - the lack of playing as a team.

I can't stand all this tribal patriotic bollox, be it england or Scotland, loads of drunk twats roaming the streets shouting about a place they just happened to be born it. Can't wait for it to be over

Wakeupin2022 · 19/06/2021 10:48

I would not be upset if England one the Euros even though I am a Scotland fan.

I would need to then turn off any social media and never watch a football match of any description again where the commentary team are English as it would be absolutely unbearable.

It is very true. Its the commentary that makes so many Scotland fans not support England.

Perhaps some of you should really listen to it next time and think of it from a Scottish, Welsh or Northern Ireland point of view when it's on the BRITISH BBC.

In fairness last night was not too bad on ITV as there was Ally and then Souness in the studio. But that is not the norm, especially if the game is on BBC.

True. Tbh I hope they both get knocked out ASAP I loathe all the flag waving hysteria on all sides too, it's good natured one minute then soon descends into typical football hooligan behaviour. That is not to say I wouldn't support Scotland in the final of course .

Yes I was born in Scotland as were my parents, grandparents, great grandparents etc. I am bloody proud of my country, we are small but we have passion and I’m sorry you are jealous of that so gave to pretend it’s beneath you.
Ericaceae · 19/06/2021 11:07

OP, congrats to your family member! The whole team were outstanding last night Star
Bit of context- because of my work, I follow loads of school and nursery social media. Sports days, etc. can't take place normally because of restrictions, it's nearly the end of term up here, and loads of them are doing Olympic and Euros-themed projects, events, non-uniform days, etc. to keep the kids going and give them a bit of a treat.
I'm over the moon for all those wee kids that got to see their team play so well last night.
Yeah, England were crap, but not my monkeys, not my circus - we played well.
Our street's all decorated (in a 'naice', middle-class area shock horror), we had Covid-safe drinks with the neighbours and the kids played in the back lane, etc. It was a bit of joy and normality after the past year.
Hope your family enjoys the rest of the tournament OP, and knows your relative has brought a load of weans lots of fun.

MrsDThomas · 19/06/2021 11:09

Im Welsh and I supported Scotland last night. The played bloody brilliantly and wiped the smiles off the English players. Definitely not what they expected.

Well done Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿!!

Lulalu · 19/06/2021 11:14

I’m so proud for a whole nation because 22 men kicked a ball around last night and none of them scored a goal.

I’m not sure how you’re containing yourself OP - absolutely mind-blowing stuff!!!

Maybe try getting out and about today.

DarceyDashwood · 19/06/2021 11:15

I am English and was brought up to cheer on all the home nations in sporting events. I went to uni in Scotland and was absolutely horrified at the anti Englishness surrounding sports - to the extent on at least one occasion I felt unsafe in a bar watching the Five Nations when it was Eng V Scotland. It really opened my eyes and I’ve struggled to feel the same way about supporting Scotland since sadly. It was really unpleasant. (Not saying the blame is all one sided - just relaying a personal experience)

reprehensibleme · 19/06/2021 11:26

For those saying all the commentary is how bad England played and no mention of Scotland, what are you listening to? Radio 4 had loads of really positive commentary about Scotland's performance and the exuberant crowd.

JudgeJ · 19/06/2021 11:36

@tigger1001

They played their hearts out tonight. They have a lot to be proud of.

We are buzzing. I doubt my eldest will get much sleep as he is just so buzzed.

If they can get their act together, Scotland, for the Croatia match, a big ask though, and England can play better against the Czech Republic there's a chance that both England and Scotland can qualify. If Wales continue to do well maybe all three home nations can qualify.
Boomisshiss · 19/06/2021 11:43

You can be sure Nicola would have been telling us the cost of cleaning up George Square if England fans left it in the state Scottish fans left London.

tigger1001 · 19/06/2021 11:55

@JudgeJ like your thinking!

My eldest is already buzzing for Tuesday night. He finishes his training at 7.30 (although I suspect they will finish early as they will all want to get home in time including the coaches) and I've been told to just be ready to bring him home 😂

KingsOfTheWildFrontier · 19/06/2021 12:03

@tigger1001 yes thank goodness it was on STV last year night, John Collins and David Moise in the studio.
If it had been on the BBC we would have had to listen to Lineka et al going on about 1966 for about the 10,000,000th time!

KingsOfTheWildFrontier · 19/06/2021 12:04

Last night not last year!

Unhomme · 19/06/2021 12:05

@BashfulClam ha ha ha.

Gone fishing

KingsOfTheWildFrontier · 19/06/2021 12:07

@reprehensibleme that's great to hear, I need to listen to Radio 4 more often.

GrandTheftWalrus · 19/06/2021 12:09

I was going to play a drinking game, take a shot every time they mentioned 1966 but I think I'd have been dead by kick off.

trockodile · 19/06/2021 12:21

The op”s little brother has just played for his national team in his first big championship-where it is pretty universally agreed that they didn’t disgrace themselves and came out with a point. I’d be buzzing with pride too. And when she is out and about today, I’m sure she will continue being proud.
