A close family member playing for Scotland tonight, been sitting at the edge of our seats all night. He said not to celebrate, not a big deal. AIBU to think it is a big fucking deal that they have a point over England!? I am buzzing, but told to calm down. AIBU to think this is actually amazing and a step in the right direction??

'They are ranked 4th because of the quality of their players, not because of what, or how much they have won.'

It's a weird system isn't it surely ranking would make more sense dependent on wins not just who the players are.

Yeah I don’t think the current system is great either

So if you hate it that much why post on this thread at all? OP was happy, you are effectively telling her she’s being happy for a stupid reason - how arrogant

This

OP - 'I'm proud of my brother'

Thread immediately fills up with people posting 'Waaahhh!!! I hate football!!!'

Completely and utterly bizarre.

The FIFA rankings are an absolute sham. You only have to watch England play to realise they are totally meaningless. Devoid of any sort of inspiration or creativity, every single one of them standing around waiting for someone else to do something, except that doesn't come because this is international football, not the EPL where the better teams are reliant on superior non-English talent.

Belgium bring on De Bruyne and the game changes instantly. That's the difference between a genuinely good side and '4th in the tinpot Fifa rankings' England.

@DarceyDashwood

I am English and was brought up to cheer on all the home nations in sporting events. I went to uni in Scotland and was absolutely horrified at the anti Englishness surrounding sports - to the extent on at least one occasion I felt unsafe in a bar watching the Five Nations when it was Eng V Scotland. It really opened my eyes and I’ve struggled to feel the same way about supporting Scotland since sadly. It was really unpleasant. (Not saying the blame is all one sided - just relaying a personal experience)
Me too. I loved living in Scotland but it didn’t take long for me to realise I wasn’t entirely welcome everywhere - mostly it was banter but sometimes it was actively hostile. My brother was beaten up for being English after a rugby match and ended up going to hospital; one of my friends was glassed outside a pub after an England game, again specifically because he was English.

I always want Scotland to do well in tournaments but realised very quickly that it just isn’t reciprocated at all. It’s a shame as I would have loved to stay living there but it’s one of the main reasons i moved away.

I am Scottish and growing up anti-English sentiment was a thing. Quite embarrassed that I never questioned it when.i was younger tbh. Blush

Not sure if things have changed now. I hope so but suspect not Sad

When Scotland play England I think it goes both ways sometimes though, does it not?

When the Czech Republic beat Scotland last week, there were masses of English fans online calling us ‘tartan clowns’ etc and celebrating that we had lost.

There are a lot of England fans who can’t even bare to say that Scotland played well.

Having lived in both countries for many years, if I had to say which is worse (anti-Scottish or anti-English sentiment), I'd say it's worse down here for being anti-Scottish. Some rather unkind comments before the match too!

I will personally support any of the home/UK teams who remain in the tournament.

Lovinglavidaloca · 22/06/2021 20:45

@comebackineedyou was that your brother that just scored?!

Lovinglavidaloca · 22/06/2021 20:50

It took me so long to find the thread. I guessed him the other night and literally just switched it on to see he’s scored.

OP is probably jumping about Hampden just now though if we’re right so I won’t expect a timely response Grin
