A close family member playing for Scotland tonight, been sitting at the edge of our seats all night. He said not to celebrate, not a big deal. AIBU to think it is a big fucking deal that they have a point over England!? I am buzzing, but told to calm down. AIBU to think this is actually amazing and a step in the right direction??

'Let’s be honest, if England was too get knocked out and Scotland still in the whole of the U.K. would be rooting for them.'
'Haha would they fuck.'

They would though. Last year Scotland once did well in something and an English footballer (can't remember who) said 'I know you hate the English but well done Scotland!' Something you would rarely if ever hear coming from a nat.

Babdoc · 19/06/2021 10:03

MaybeCrazy2, that is true - English fans would definitely support Scotland if England were knocked out. We did so in the World Cup in Argentina, the whole UK was behind the Scottish team.
But ask yourself if the reverse ever happens.
Many Scots have a poisonous attitude of supporting “anyone but England”.

SueSaid · 19/06/2021 10:04

'Many Scots have a poisonous attitude of supporting “anyone but England'

It's awful isn't it. All that bitterness and bile.

Blowingagale · 19/06/2021 10:04

Scotland were great and England just didn’t seem to turn up. I’m an England fan - you should definitely be celebrating. Smile

Scautish · 19/06/2021 10:04

Why are the English on this thread so worked up about not winning?

I guess it must really smart to realise your team was outplayed at home by a lowly ranked nation. Do you want to talk about it?

MaMelon · 19/06/2021 10:04

So one footballer said that on camera and you extrapolate that to ‘the whole of the UK’?!!

Toty · 19/06/2021 10:07

As an aside how would Nicola have reacted to thousands of English fans pitching up in Glasgow without tickets, she'd be doing her pursed lipped/wobbly head thing telling them off on telly as we speak.

I don't know. Nicola has invited the entire world to Edinburgh for the international fringe festival which I can't quite believe is going ahead, our kids go back to school slap bang in the middle of the festival and will then no doubt get the blame and suffer the consequences of an increase in cases Hmm.

MaMelon · 19/06/2021 10:09

@Toty Ahhh, but that’s at the behest of Nicola, so that’s OK. English fans coming up here without her express say so? Totally different ball game (literally).

I'm not worked up about the game. If England get knocked out and Scotland go through I'll be supporting them as we are all indeed part of the UK.

It is some Scots sneery anti English sentiment that is (as always) the problem.

buffyajp · 19/06/2021 10:11

@Scautish

YANBU OP. Scotland were brilliant - absolutely deserved the draw (and were the better team). Every single player should be proud.

(Though it’s so tedious to have to listen to English commenters banging on about England playing badly rather than just saying actually, Scotland played really well)

That’s funny because they did both. Yes Scotland did play very well ( except for actually scoring a goal) but that doesn’t take away that England did play badly. We are allowed to mention that you know.
MaMelon · 19/06/2021 10:13

@JaniieJones
There’s some English sneery anti-Scots sentiment going on too - don’t kid yourself that there isn’t and certainly don’t attempt to assume the moral high ground.

betterNCforthis · 19/06/2021 10:13

I thought Scotland played really well, and they prevented England from playing to their potential. They showed real effort, passion, skill and pride. Scots should be proud!

Btw, it was strange to see so few Celtic and Rangers players.

EishetChayil · 19/06/2021 10:15

He said not to celebrate, not a big deal

That isn't for him to say! It's a huge deal for the fans. Very odd comment.

SueSaid · 19/06/2021 10:15

'So one footballer said that on camera and you extrapolate that to ‘the whole of the UK’?!!'

No. It was an example. You just don't get the widespread 'anyone but Scotland' regarding football matches from the English. Many support anyone in the UK.

Some of you need to grow up tbh and try to be a bit more sportsmanlike in your attitude.

I thought it was great how both teams took the knee, displaying a bit of team playing respect.

buffyajp · 19/06/2021 10:16

Agree Janile. I can handle England not winning fine but I won’t be told that I can’t criticise them because some Scots don’t like it. Scotland played very well but at the end of the day it’s about scoring goals which is something neither team did. Personally I can’t imagine celebrating a draw but that’s just me.

We are huge fans of the Edinburgh festival but had made up our minds early on that if it was going ahead, in whatever guise we would miss it this year. So I hadn't actually kept up with whether it was going ahead or not. Had assumed that it would be very limited if it did go ahead.

It's interesting to me that the governments of both countries are more inclined to give freedoms to events which make money, and not seem to care too much about the covid consequences. The golf, the tennis, the football, the Edinburgh festival.

Yet we are still limited as to how many people we can have in our homes or gardens. Fans singing their hearts out (and don't get me wrong, I would be too) last night shoulder to shoulder, yet no singing in schools.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

This definitely has to be a wind up now. No one can be this unaware.

moonbedazzled · 19/06/2021 10:19

I can't speak for the whole of the uk, but I can honestly say that when England get knocked out, if Scotland or Wales are still in, I'll be hoping they'll win. The same as I do during the Commonwealth Games. Why would I want France to win over Scotland or Germany over Wales? I can't get my head around why anyone would think differently to that.

DixonD · 19/06/2021 10:20

OP, what do you mean by “a step in the right direction”?

You must have been very proud watching him last night. Win or lose, it must have been a great game for your family to watch.

Exactly. Apparently this is being 'unaware' or a 'wind up' if we don't share some people's bitterness and weird tribal angst.
Helendee · 19/06/2021 10:22

Why is patriotism hailed and lauded as long as it’s done by any other nation than the English, in which case it’s considered to be akin to being a member of the BNP?!
Aggie Mackenzie ( Aggie and Kim) stated that seeing people display the England flag makes her think of “white van man, Essex and Nigel Farage supporters”
The woman is Scottish and Scots folk rightly display and are proud of the Saltire but she seems to have ignored that fact.

It was a great performance and well earned point. You are definitely not BU!
MaMelon · 19/06/2021 10:23

No. It was an example

No, it was a single example used to back up the claim that the whole of the UK would support Scotland - which is nonsense.

Flowerlane · 19/06/2021 10:24

@MaybeCrazy2

Let’s be honest, if England was too get knocked out and Scotland still in the whole of the U.K. would be rooting for them. Football divides us until it brings us together, it’s funny like that!

It would be lovely for ANY U.K. team to win really.

Grin hands down you win for best joke! 👏

It's not the criticism of the English team that's the problem with the English commentators is the fact they don't balance that out with the fact Scotland played well. It's only ones side of the equation that's portrayed. I have no issue saying England played poorly - that's a fact, and one that must be of huge concern to the team. But it doesn't take the shine away for me that Scotland played well.

Reminds me of when Osaka won her first slam and all anyone was interested in was Williams behaviour. Few of the press actually praised her for her performance.
