Anyone else shocked by the rape statistics?

I think this is shameful: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9698711/Shame-rape-justice-sex-offence-convictions-tumble.html

Deeply ashamed' ministers apologise for convicting just 1,439 rapists out of 128,000 rapes that happened in the UK this year and 43,187 that were reported to police

It's absolutely tragic. And yet another example of men not being held accountable by other men

IntoAir · 17/06/2021 23:19

Not shocked. Just resigned. Women aren’t really considered fully human basically.

SarahAndQuack · 17/06/2021 23:23

Not even surprised, unfortunately.

It's absolutely awful, but for a very long time, very little has been done to make it more possible for rape survivors to get justice - not because no one cares, but because the people who care are fighting against such appalling odds.

It blows my mind that, in 2020, we still doubt rape survivors, but we do. Rape myths are pervasive. Going to the police is incredibly hard.

No, I'm not shocked.

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/06/2021 23:25

Not shocked. Also baffled as to how a rapist can be even arrested much less convicted if the victim never reports the rape? I see no reason for judges to be ashamed for not convicting a rapist that never got in the court in the first place. Which is actually a number much lower than the 43, 187 reported to police. Do you know that over 90% of reported rapes never get to court or a judge?

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/06/2021 23:30

FFS you can be considered human and tortured and murdered whether man, woman or child. Considering someone human doesn’t mean your fellow humans won’t harm, injure or kill you. Rape is a type of violent assault. It doesn’t mean you’re not considered fully human.
CardinalLolzy · 17/06/2021 23:33

I don't think we can handwave away reports of rape because they didn't meet the very high bar of (being deemed by various people of) having a high chance of success in court or not being even brought to court in good time. There are loads of reasons why a case might not make it very far, it doesn't mean the rape was less real.

I think we need to flip it on its head and look at why so many men rape when they know - or because they know - they are likely to get away with it.

If you have read the first Secret Barrister book you'll be familiar with loads of the barriers here; crippling defunding of the system is just one.

SarahAndQuack · 17/06/2021 23:35

Confused @intoair never said you couldn't be considered human and harmed?

daisyjgrey · 17/06/2021 23:35

If you're shocked, you haven't been paying attention.

Alternista · 17/06/2021 23:37

I’d love the luxury of being shocked, tbh.

This isn't that far away from my take on the BBC article.

The talk is always about 'poor rates of convictions', when the stats show that two thirds of all charges result in a conviction.

The real issue appears to be that only 3% of reports actually end up in someone being formally charged.

Drivingmeupthewall · 17/06/2021 23:38

Not even slightly shocked. It’s appalling what a rape victim has to endure before the police/CPS then throw it out anyway. Sad

Thelnebriati · 17/06/2021 23:39

I'll just put this BBC link here, the Daily Mail looks more like Ali Express every time I look at it.

TW for the link.
It took Carol Higgins 30 years to get police to take her case seriously, now she intends to sue West Yorkshire Police.

BoredOfThisShit · 17/06/2021 23:40

This year alone?
As in 6 months?

NiceGerbil · 17/06/2021 23:41

40% say YABU.

those who voted that way

It would be good to know if you think

OP is unreasonable to be shocked as it's been in the news before this

Or

Something else- what is it?

Comtesse · 17/06/2021 23:45

It’s like there are no consequences for this crime. The vast majority of perpetrators face no action at all. Terrifying.

NiceGerbil · 17/06/2021 23:47

The reason so many rapes aren't reported is because they know that the chance of conviction is very very very low, the process is a nightmare, the victims are often investigated rather than looking into the crime, all that business about handing over your mobile phone which got a lot of press that I'm sure would make many women think twice. Etc etc.

So that is s result of the justice system really.

Recently it was reported that only 1 in 60 reported rapes lead to a charge. Not a prosection. Not a conviction. A charge.

A woman from. Can't remember. House of lords? Or something really high up. Said that rape is effectively decriminalised.

I'm not at all shocked. It's appalling though.

endofthelinefinally · 17/06/2021 23:49

We have known this for ages. It has been discussed in detail on the feminist board.
Men can rape women with impunity all over the world, including the UK.
1 rape a day in school in England.
Men get away very lightly when they murder women too.
Women and girls are expendable.

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/06/2021 23:50

@NiceGerbil
I voted YABU because

  • not shocked. Rape is so rarely punished it’s common knowledge that men usually get away with it.
  • don’t agree that ministers or courts are to blame for low numbers of convictions compared to reported rapes because over 90% of rapes reported to the police get bungled by the police so never even make it to court!
PlanDeRaccordement · 17/06/2021 23:53

So that is s result of the justice system really.

Ah, I don’t see police as part of the justice system. I see them as part of the law enforcement system. They investigate and charge criminals, and then hand the case over to the justice system for prosecution.

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/06/2021 23:55

@endofthelinefinally

I don’t agree entirely with this because men kill other men/boys at double to triple the rate they kill women/girls. It’s just that all human life is cheap.

NiceGerbil · 17/06/2021 23:57

Plan so you seem to be suggesting that it's women's fault for not reporting

Rather than their not reporting being a reaction to the stats etc

Is that correct?

FactsAndFigs · 17/06/2021 23:58

Sadly not shocked but still horrified as like pedos that just get slap on wrist

HoldontoOneMoreDay · 17/06/2021 23:58

This is particularly hard to read today, when a man received a jail term of under 3 years for sexually assaulting a minor, getting her blind drunk on vodka, then leaving her alone on the top of a hill where she died of hypothermia.

Under 3 years for a dead girl.

Why the fuck would you even bother reporting a rape under this system? Fuck this shit. No justice, no peace.

NiceGerbil · 17/06/2021 23:59

The stats for reported rapes are appalling as well.

I in 60 reported see someone charged.
