Due to sensitive skin I cleanse my face using Simple Micellar water and Simple eye makeup remover. In the morning I apply Simple Face wash and rinse it off in the shower. This is followed by No7 toner, Nivea Q10 eye cream and Q10 moisturiser. I don't use face masks much as they tend to irritate my skin and give me spots Hmm

Makeup wise I use No7 light reflecting foundation and No7 under eye pen concealer, a slick of No7 sensitive eyes mascara, a dab of No7 loose powder and little brush of No7 bronzer - I use a cherry colour bees wax lip balm for a hint of colour.

I think the products I use are gentle and are calming to my skin but a friend said today that all the products I use are actually shit to use her own word!Shock. She recommended all these ridiculously expensive products that she knows I can't afford and tbh I don't know if they're that good anyway!

What do you use or recommend I use?

This sounds bizarrely like a PR plop.

WeeFae · 17/06/2021 20:53

I run my face under the shower for a couple of minutes. Pat dry with a towel. Age 41, no wrinkles.

CityCommuter · 17/06/2021 21:04

@LadyJaye not PR plop! Sorry but it's a genuine question

ditto, but I have some face soap bar thing from Lush made from old bread or something. A bar lasts for about a 18 months. I follow up with factor 50 suntan lotion.

Wash my face with cerave cleanser, either an AHA or rose water toner, hyaluronic acid with moisturiser and an SPF. Evenings I’ll skip the AHA and use niacinamide, vitamin c serum or retinol on rotation every other day probably, but I get a lot of texture on my skin and discolouring from old acne scars which helps treat it.

flippertygibbit · 17/06/2021 21:07

I'm a horror - I wash my make up off in the morning with whatever handsoap sits next to the sink then reapply makeup. That's it. I am 49, I have no wrinkles, fab genes though!

cadburyegg · 17/06/2021 21:10

I wash my face 1-2 times a day and put moisturiser on afterwards. I just use cheap kind & pure moisturiser from Tesco but tbh I'm quite lucky in that I have clear skin. I want to get a SPF moisturiser though because I'm very fair skinned

GertietheGherkin · 17/06/2021 21:10

Mines much like yours OP... It's funny when we have these people telling us we should be using X,Y&Z, but I've always looked at the skin of these people... Tbh it looks like dried leather sometimes. The more ingredients in a product, the more you run the risk of more reactions/allergies.
Leave them to their products and stick with yours. I often get mistaken for 12-15yrs younger than my age... So I must be doing something right 😂

MadMadMadamMim · 17/06/2021 21:10

Wash my face with a damp flannel in a morning.

Very occasionally (about 4 times a year, if I'm honest) I feel virtuous and do the same in the evening followed by whatever lurking face cream I've discovered in the bathroom cabinet.

I'm not looking bad for 56. I occasionally admire myself (without my reading glasses) in the mirror and think how very young and wrinkle free I'd look if I hadn't a) smoked for 30 years and b) ever had any kind of skin care routine.

Water

N4ish · 17/06/2021 21:12

Sounds like you’re using far too many products and irritating your skin. Don’t bother with more expensive stuff, just scale back on what you’re using.

OverByYer · 17/06/2021 21:13

I wash with any old facial wash in the shower in the morning.
Then use Paula’s Choice aha exfoliater
Boots vit C serum
Boots no 7 eye cream
Trinny BFF

Evening
Micellar water to remove make up
Boots Retinol
Manuka Honey anti ageing facial oil

I am nearly 50 though so need all the help I can get

CityCommuter · 17/06/2021 21:14

@flippertygibbit whatever works, you're obviously doing something right if you don't have any wrinkles! For those mentioning washing their face in the shower, I love showering my face every morning but maybe I should use some sort of gentle exfoliater sometimes as well? Is there a gentle one as anytime I exfoliate it completely strips my skin of all its natural oil and it takes a few days for it to restore itself!

I’d recommend the La Roche Posau Toleraine range for sensitive skin, it’s one of the few moisturisers that don’t break me out. It is on the pricier side but last for a few months.

Also showering your face could be too much for your skin, I wash mine in the basin after my shower.

frugalkitty · 17/06/2021 21:16

You have to just use products that suit your skin, especially if it's sensitive. Everybody's skin is different so while some get away with soap and water, others can't. Equally, some people see it as a chore, others enjoy the ritual of cleansing etc.

As you asked, I currently use Elemis balm cleanser followed by rosewater from the Turkish supermarket and aveeno cream. I do have some other products that I use from time to time depending on what my skin is doing or reacting to, but generally my skin likes minimal fuss (although some people use less than I do!). I don't wear a lot of make up, although I usually wear it every day, and I never go to bed without cleansing my skin, even in my student days if I woke in the night after a drink or ten two, if I couldn't remember washing my face I'd get up and do it.

itsmellslikepopcarn · 17/06/2021 21:17

And sorry for drip feeding but please try a chemical exfoliation rather than manual, they’re generally too harsh on most skin types.

Biancadelrioisback · 17/06/2021 21:24

I just use The Ordinary stuff. I bought a balance set (4 products for about £25) which lasted ages and I just top up every now and again. I really like it and noticed a huge difference. But I've also cut out using Foundation which has probably been a big help too.

I've got mates who have amazing skin and use products in the £100-£200 bracket, but also have mates who use the same stuff and their skin is not any better than mine.

Think it's largely down to genetics and how you take care of your skin with regards to SPF

Hankunamatata · 17/06/2021 21:24

Tea tree soap in morning then no 7 day face cream. Any face wipes in evening and no 7 night cream. Gave up on make up when masks came as just gets rubbed off at work and looks crap

ghostyslovesheets · 17/06/2021 21:24

Morning - Pixi Rose Tonic + Revitalift day cream

evening - Pixi Clarity face wash and either Pixi Overnight Retinol Oil or Overnight Glow Serum

boydy99 · 17/06/2021 21:24

I use an app called Think Dirty and a website called cosmilly to analyse the ingredients in cosmetics. Cosmilly will tell you if any of the ingredients are known irritants and also tells you the positives of the ingredients too

I recently switched to a mascara called Poppy Austin from my No7 one and I now don't get any itching on my eyes. at the moment I use Superdrugs naturally radiant cleanser and toner, and their vitamin E day and night creams. but when they're finished I'm going to try Alaffia, a brand I recently discovered who seem very ethical and clean in terms of ingredients.

LesRosiers · 17/06/2021 21:26

I'm struggling to picture what a 'slick' of mascara might look like Grin

In the morning I wash my face with a flannel wrung out in warm water, then put on factor 50. Maybe a bit of tinted moisturiser and mascara. Wash my face the same way in the evening, followed by tretinoin cream. That's it. One of my DD's said the other day that she hopes she's inherited my genes as she claims I look younger than my age. No idea if that's true, but I really couldn't be arsed with doing much more, and suspect the evidence for many products is limited.

doadeer · 17/06/2021 21:28

I love my skincare routine. My skin would be horribly tight with just water. Every time these threads come up there is a huge range of answers. Your friend doesn't know best and it's a poor friend to criticise you like that.

I use a cleansing balm and then a gel cleanser, then I use Retinol/acid exoliate and a serum followed by a facial oil.

In the morning I wear vit c serum, Spf and a bb cream. I don't wear make up often.

If you are happy with your skin, what's the problem? 🤷‍♀️

It's honestly in the genes. My DM is the same. She's 81 and has some eye wrinkles but nothing to speak of really. Strange thing is, 2 sisters have loads of wrinkles but spend a fortune on products. DGM never wore make up and died aged 99 with a few wrinkles but not as much as my two (over 50's) sisters have just now.

Tangled22 · 17/06/2021 21:31

I use The Ordinary Lactic Acid to cleanse (chemical exfoliant) - best way to cleanse your face - £5.80

Then I use The Inkey List hyaluronic acid serum - this magically plumps out/removes wrinkles - £5.99

Then I moisturise with The Inkey List Bakuchoil moisturiser - this is a gentle alternative to retinol that you can use when pregnant/breastfeeding, and it is fab - £9.99

Then in the morning I apply my SPF 50 La Roche Posay Anthelios £13

I don’t think it’s that expensive tbh. Up until recently I did just use water/flannel and whatever face cream was to hand. But then a dreaded wrinkle appeared between my eyes (I’m only late 20s!) and I realised I need to start looking after my skin properly. Wrinkle is gone now thanks to aforementioned products!

Agree with PP that using a manual face wash and in particular rinsing your face under shower water will not be good for your skin unfortunately. Washing gently in the sink is better. Also you should try and use an SPF every day really.

LockdownCheeseToastie · 17/06/2021 21:32

Morning- wash in shower with shower gel. Aldi caviar day moisturiser. Evening- wash with whatever cleanser I have on the go. Aldi night caviar moisturiser. Once a week- glycolic acid pads (Aldi version of nip and fab) or a face mask of some sort. Make up once in a blue moon. Have used serums and the ordinary buffet and retinol etc but it makes no difference so cheap and cheerful it is.
