Short school skirts

AIBU to think the reason given to me for girls not wearing skirts at school is worrying? So just been called by the school. Apparently all parents have been because girls skirts are very short and it's against school policy. I can only assume the little tyke (13) is rolling her school skirt up because it's not short when she leaves the house and ill sort it when she gets in, but I am concerned with what the female teacher said to me. The reason why the girls skirts shouldn't be short is because male teachers and other boys may feel uncomfortable. Also out of school grounds the girls might be attacked. And young girls must learn to protect their dignity. I have no problem with a uniform and following it, but if male teachers are uncomfortable in seeing a 13 year old with a short skirt, should they really be teaching? And why are we saying what a person wears means they may be attacked. I did ask if any girls had been attacked and I didn't get an answer. I just think it's a really bad message that girls have to change what they wear for those reasons.

Their is a school local to us and the girls all pull their skirts up. Barely covering their arse. It makes me feel uncomfortable!

TurtleBay28 · 18/06/2021 07:00

There*

montysma1 · 18/06/2021 07:01

Would you be uncomfortable or concerned on the part of your daughter if the male teachers and pupils were sporting skin tight shorts with a little bit of scrote escaping and their arse hanging out?

Of course it makes male teachers uncomfortable. It makes me uncomfortable. Have the men just to keep their heads down and stare at the floor?

Onlinedilema · 18/06/2021 07:21

I wrote out a long list but lost it.

Basically girls should wear the same uniform as boys.
Smart, practical, functional wear.

Not all this short, figure revealing crap.
Female clothing is impractical enough, stop buying into it.
Women fought long and hard to be able to wear trousers, I remember freezing at school in a skirt and socks.
I am so glad the PE uniform for my dcs was unisex. No tighter clothing for girls.
The reason given for not wearing a skirt was wrong in the ops post BUT I do agree that all students should be wearing non revealing clothing.

Onlinedilema · 18/06/2021 07:24

I also am old enough to have had to wear a 'court shoe' to work. No flat shoes allowed, no comfortable practical shoes allowed. Had to be a full court shoe. Very uncomfortable for me.
We do not want to go back to those times trust me.
My dds wore trousers to school, their choice. If they chose to wear a skirt it had to be a longer length and pleated.

Brefugee · 18/06/2021 07:26

you need to get this nipped in the bud - if they can't find a reason for no short skirts other than "it distracts the boys and makes the male teachers uncomfortable" you might like to draw their attention to the report about girls being harassed and abused in a sexual way at school and ask what they are doing about that.

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/06/2021 07:34

@Willyoujustbequiet

The reason is wrong but there are 14 years old at my local high school literally with their arses hanging out. No tights. Its absolutely ridiculous.

I just think wtf are their parents thinking.

Ah now this isn’t what I’m talking about with my dd. She has to wear tights all year round and she prefers the 100 denier +. She rolls her pleated skirt up to the Australian length… I know some girls at her school go shorter. But I didn’t realise the extent of the issue at some schools.

I don’t agree with trousers only. Much more inconvenient for girls and periods. Dd can carry a change of undies and tights; skirts are less likely to become bloodied than trousers. DD’s school probably insist on pleated skirts to avoid the skimpy micro mini.

SoupDragon · 18/06/2021 07:39

Would you be uncomfortable or concerned on the part of your daughter if the male teachers and pupils were sporting skin tight shorts with a little bit of scrote escaping and their arse hanging out?

This is a very good point. I bet people would be complaining that their DDs shouldn't have to see that.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 18/06/2021 07:43

My DCs school has form for girls wearing extremely short skirts. I mean just about below the bum not just showing a bit of leg. When they sit, bend over or walk upstairs you can see everything. I think that the message should be that no one wants to see people's arses and nether regions. This would not be acceptable in the workplace and it certainly wouldn't be acceptable if boys were to let it all hang out. Can you imagine the outrage?

SilverGlitterBaubles · 18/06/2021 07:46

@SadFace1983

When these girls in tiny skirts and thongs sit down, don't their gussets come into contact with the seat? Gross. Won't their skin get burnt or scratched if they sit on a bench on a hot day or a brick wall? Sounds uncomfortable to me. I like a bit of fabric to sit on personally.

@FudgeSundae

I don’t know. I don’t like saying things are modest or immodest either because it’s not to do with decency so much as appropriateness. Like, I don’t want my boss to come to work in a mankini. It’s not because I would find it distracting (as a heterosexual woman) or immodest (if it’s a weird word to use for a man it’s not the right word to use for a schoolgirl), it’s because it’s not appropriate. That’s all they need to say.
@FudgeSundae Spitting out my tea here! Also the argument of ‘appropriateness for the workplace’ is the appropriate one here.

I also like the idea of a letter by @ProfPickles

motogogo · 18/06/2021 08:01

I can tell you I rolled my skirt in the 1980's, nothing new.

I had a lot of problems getting longer skirts for my DD's, they are both slim (size 6 & 8 as adults) so the age 12 or whatever was far too wide on the waist. I did get a letter saying dd1's was too short, checked label and it was age 8-9! Manufacturers need to make longer skirts!

motogogo · 18/06/2021 08:02

@WestendVBroadway

My DD's wore skirts that length in the U.K.

Bouncebacker · 18/06/2021 08:08

I work with students, and by the time they get to university the teeny skirts have nearly disappeared in public setting - or they do within the first few weeks of semester one…. and most of the women I meet (aged 17 + ) would mostly regard themselves as feminists - a marked change from 20 years ago. So I meet young women who have worked out the impression that is made by exposing arse cheeks might not reflective well on them, but would also be outraged by the suggestion that you should change what you wear to protect the delicate sensitivities of men. So I think it’s just maturity.

malificent7 · 18/06/2021 08:09

I think it is a two way thing here. Dd (12) has been supplied with skirts of a 'normal' length for school but she hoiks it up using shoe laces ffs. I have told her that wearing certain clothes give out certain messsges but she has accused me of slut shaming.

Now whilst I agree that male teachers shouldnt look up sshool girl skirts , I do wonder why the enduring fashion among girls seems to be fanny scraping micro skirts . Why not wear the skirt at a

" normal" length?

malificent7 · 18/06/2021 08:09

School*

AuntieStella · 18/06/2021 08:11

The school shouid not be employing male teachers they think are harrassing female pupils (by gaze or action). What the girl is wearing doesn't come in to it - men who are disturbed by normal teenage behaviour shouid not be in schools.

And the school should be teaching boys not to be creeps. And never assume that creep behaviour is normal/acceptable and that it is controlled only by controlling girls, not the perpetrators

malificent7 · 18/06/2021 08:12

" normal" length being just above the knee. Professional settings ( including school) call for profesdional clothing.

malificent7 · 18/06/2021 08:14

As an ex female teacher i can attest that men do have to look at their class occasionally and would rather teach than sort out uniform issues.

AuntieStella · 18/06/2021 08:16

Teenagers have been wearing skirts v short since the 1970s to my certain personal knowledge, and I doubt it was new then. Look at old pix from the first part of the 20th century and it was common enough then as well.

Perhaps the question should be flipped round, and asked why normal teen choices are now being used to blame girls for creepy male behaviour?

BarbarianMum · 18/06/2021 08:19

Is it unreasonable for male teachers to feel uncomfortable at being able to see their pupils underwear? It certainly makes me uncomfortable and I'm a middle aged heterosexual woman. I think we ought to question why wearing uber short skirts is regarded as a normal facet of teenage girl behaviour tbh.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 18/06/2021 08:22

I was at high school about 20 years ago and we rolled our skirts then so it’s nothing new. .
If you don’t want girls to roll the up then stop making skirts uniform.
Make it a unisex uniform with pants or dress shorts as options polo or shirt without a stupid tie.
Problem Solved.

SoupDragon · 18/06/2021 08:24

I bet girls would find a way to shorten the shorts.

Batshitmeansbatshit · 18/06/2021 08:24

I know of secondary schools where all pupils wear trousers. Explanation: teachers are not going to waste teaching time trying to enforce uniform rules.
There are also no leggings rules, unless school issue sports ones.
Seems very sensible

Didiplanthis · 18/06/2021 08:25

But its ok for people on her to post that they feel uncomfortable with colleagues wearing bulge enhancing trousers.and sitting with their legs apart etc. in these cases it is the men that are are wrong ?? The male teachers are probably uncomfortable because if what they might be accused of not what they might do !!
