To ask about another restricted Christmas?

95 replies

TwinsAndTrifle · 13/06/2021 15:25

I know it's the summer....but I'm an active member on the Christmas boards, and a few people have made the same comment, about Christmas forthcoming.

They state that they are really planning ahead this year, as they foresee another lockdown Christmas, or very tight restrictions coming back for the winter season.

Do many people share this view? It hadn't even crossed my mind, what with all the vaccines that will be in place by then.

AIBU to think that Christmas this year will be pretty much unaffected?

Yes/YABU: I think there will be a very restricted, or lockdown Christmas again.

No/YANBU: It will be a normal Christmas, or affected so minimally that you barely notice.

Once everyone who wants it has been offered two doses, it's time to drop the training wheels.

Cases will still happen, some people will still die. We have to live on regardless.

Furrydogmum · 13/06/2021 17:10

@PotteringAlong ditto!! Blush

This is exactly my thinking. If you didn't take up the offer and then all adults have been offered it, then we have to move forward. I don't have the flu Jab - I take my chances. My decision.
Nocutenamesleft · 13/06/2021 17:11

@NeverForgetYourDreams

The thing which does concern me slightly is that they have today said that 29% of the people who have died since this variant was found have had both vaccinations. I wish I could understand why they were not better protected.

Died 'with Covid' not 'of Covid'

Shouldn't have given India 3 weeks notice of turning red here. That's where the problem lies. Firmly at our government

Oh gosh

Can you post the link please? I’d like to share that to a family member

cupsofcoffee · 13/06/2021 17:11

This is why this is still going on, because people think they won't make a difference if they just carry on as they want.

No, it's going on because COVID is a virus that will be around forever - like flu or the common cold.

Or do you think restrictions should last forever?

Echobelly · 13/06/2021 17:11

Yeah, we will have to get to a point where it becomes 'just another thing people die of', basically - I would hope this winter will be soon enough. If this winter is no worse than a 'bad flu winter' in terms of hospital capacity and deaths, we'd be going in the right direction.

The first para wasn't mine. Bold fail

Nocutenamesleft · 13/06/2021 17:13

Sorry. That should of quoted @MagicSummer

Could you post the link which says about 29% please

MagicSummer · 13/06/2021 17:13

@Nocutenamesleft - here's the link - it's a DM article.

Yes. Apologies! Meant to quote someone else.
MagicSummer · 13/06/2021 17:14

@Nocutenamesleft - sorry that is 29 people, not 29% - sorry to mislead.

Nocutenamesleft · 13/06/2021 17:14

Thank you. Though I read today somewhere. That out of the 42 people. Only 7 had both vaccines. It’s so hard to keep up.

LexCake · 13/06/2021 17:20

I’ve never seen a YABU as close as this! Currently 50/50 which reflects the conversations I seem to have with friends. I’d be fascinated to know if the experts would also be split 50/50. I reckon maybe they would.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/06/2021 17:21

@NeverForgetYourDreams

What's the point of me having this vaccine if we constantly at threat of lockdowns. Once all adults been offered it then that should be it. Yearly boosters.
Fuck yearly boosters. The vaccine has affected my health terribly. I’ve been pretty much in permanent lockdown for the last decade due to my health.
Nocutenamesleft · 13/06/2021 17:22

@MagicSummer

It was 29%. In the daily mail article. 12 people out of 42.

Sorry that I got it a bit wrong - that's the trouble with rushing into print before thoroughly checking!

osbertthesyrianhamster · 13/06/2021 17:25

This is why this is still going on, because people think they won't make a difference if they just carry on as they want.

This virus is going nowhere. It will become endemic. It will still go on because it's a respiratory virus and people just keep on breathing. Time to actually live whilst breathing.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 13/06/2021 17:26

No, because by then it would have been a year since the vaccination program started. If we are still having restrictions imposed on us by then the big question would be "what was the point of it all when nothing has changed in a year?" It's time to start treating covid as something we have to learn to live with as we do the flu.

Tumbleweed101 · 13/06/2021 17:26

We completely lost xmas last year as my daughter test positive on xmas day so we were isolating until after New year. This year, with us all being vaccinated, it will be normal for us regardless of what we are told to do. We will obviously risk assess for ourselves - we have LFT etc and we only have xmas with my 'bubble anyway.

sadperson16 · 13/06/2021 17:55

I detest the winter, I loathe Christmas. It is a rather dull 24 hours in the deadest part of the year to be tolerated.

Please please somebody enlighten me, as to why I should be worrying about it now?

MouseholeCat · 13/06/2021 17:56

I don't think this Christmas will look at all like last Christmas. It's vastly likely that Covid is now endemic, but we have vaccine technology that will continue to develop and keep include new strains. It's been extremely effective so far, even with the new strains.

Like with flu, it there will be years that are more challenging. But, ultimately, it needs to be lived with. I get my flu shot every year, and I'm fully prepared to also get my Covid shot.

thelegohooverer · 13/06/2021 18:12

I’m hoping for a wonderful Christmas but I’m planning for a situation where we need restrictions but people won’t want them and the govt won’t have the back bone to lead.

I definitely don’t want to be in crowded shops in December so I’ll be buying ahead. I’ll seriously consider the flu vaccine and gently encourage others in my circle to do the same. There’s a possibility that flu could be a bigger threat than covid.

I’ll be meeting up with family over the summer months, and enjoying any opportunity to get together so that if there are restrictions at Christmas it won’t feel as bad.

And if numbers are very high at Christmas I’ll postpone meeting elderly and vulnerable family members so that they don’t end up not being able to get a ventilator because younger people need them too. It’s just one day after all.

Or I may consider taking the dc out of school early and quarantining for Christmas. It’s too early to decide.

SteveArnottsWaistcoat · 13/06/2021 18:12

My parents are older now and my kids are growing up. My family has been through so much trauma and loss over recent years. We all chose to completely ignore restrictions taken from us after we made arrangements last year and we will merrily down the same this year.

If people want to be self righteous about how brilliant they are sticking to restrictions good on them! I’ve complied with most of them but there are some things that can simply go fuck theirselves.

fashionablefennel · 13/06/2021 18:15

SteveArnottsWaistcoat

at least you are honest about it. Most people have done exactly the same but pretend they are special and rules don't apply to them.
