To ask about another restricted Christmas?

TwinsAndTrifle · 13/06/2021 15:25

I know it's the summer....but I'm an active member on the Christmas boards, and a few people have made the same comment, about Christmas forthcoming.

They state that they are really planning ahead this year, as they foresee another lockdown Christmas, or very tight restrictions coming back for the winter season.

Do many people share this view? It hadn't even crossed my mind, what with all the vaccines that will be in place by then.

AIBU to think that Christmas this year will be pretty much unaffected?

Yes/YABU: I think there will be a very restricted, or lockdown Christmas again.

No/YANBU: It will be a normal Christmas, or affected so minimally that you barely notice.

Have voted yabu for talking about sodding Christmas in June.

megletthesecond · 13/06/2021 16:40

Planning for the worst but hoping for the best here.

partyatthepalace · 13/06/2021 16:41

I’d assume in the middle. Family groups - yes, parties - no.

HeronLanyon · 13/06/2021 16:43

I think it may be something in between your two options.

Anuthanamechange · 13/06/2021 16:46

I have my fingers crossed. I have already booked Christmas activities such as the theatre and festive stuff at a local NT. however, I’ve also booked with insurance in the event someone is ill - I never book insurance, but it’s my standard now.

So, I have fingers crossed we are stabilised by then, but I’m also mindful of potential mutations. The Delta variant is a huge concern and nobody knows what next month will look like, let alone six months away.

Having said that, I’m living my life but with added precautions so I don’t lose out financially.

Dohrehmee · 13/06/2021 16:46

There will be be some sort of restrictions . I’m not sure of what those will be

osbertthesyrianhamster · 13/06/2021 16:50

Nah, fuck that. I'll leave the country again. Actually we'll probably go on a cruise over Xmas this year.

HeronLanyon · 13/06/2021 16:50

megletthesecond the problem withplanning for the worst hoping for the best’ is that the ‘best’ can be tricky to produce without planning ! I think I’m going to plan for the best but in a cancellable/rearrangable/freezable way !

fashionablefennel · 13/06/2021 16:54

I am not convinced enough to book a holiday unfortunately, I could imagine restrictions in flights and holidays.

Restrictions at home? I don't care, it's December and miserable here anyway. As long as we can go away this summer and next half term, who cares. Christmas is not cancelled, is it!

People didn't comply last year, people don't comply in general and have never been forced to. It's the ones missing on trip abroad and kids missing school who are being penalised.

luckylavender · 13/06/2021 16:54

Truly nobody knows. It depends on so many factors. No one likes it but nobody is safe until everyone is safe.

fashionablefennel · 13/06/2021 16:55

Even the royals did not comply with last Christmas restrictions and were photographed meeting others in some activity thing! Leading by example as always Hmm

MagicSummer · 13/06/2021 16:57

@BlatantlyNameChanged

I think for this year alone that if numbers shoot up in the winter then we might see some very low level restrictions such as masks in public places and on public transport as well as a recommendation/advisory notice that people should use social distancing (but a "should" rather than a "must"). I think that'll be the extent of it though and we won't see a return to lockdown or stricter restrictions. I also expect that this year the government and Public Health will really push the flu vaccine to try increase take up and ease pressure on the NHS from that side of things to help increase capacity for any increase in covid cases.

From next year onwards it'll all be more or less normal regardless of case numbers, winter will be known as covid and flu season rather rather than flu season and when you go for your flu jab you'll get your covid booster at the same time, at some point in the next couple of years they'll probably even be in the same syringe as the development of them moves on. The current vaccination programme will be wound up and it'll become like the flu jab - those who qualify will get it free on the NHS from either their GP or the high Street pharmacy, those who don't qualify will be able to pay £10-£15 to have it done at the pharmacy.

What a very sensible post @BlatantlyNameChanged - I think almost exactly the same as you!

The thing which does concern me slightly is that they have today said that 29% of the people who have died since this variant was found have had both vaccinations. I wish I could understand why they were not better protected.

PotteringAlong · 13/06/2021 16:57

Oh I hope so! We were trying to work out if we could get away with having the paired down Christmas we had last year instead of the obligation to cook for lots of people. Decided that it wouldn’t fly, but this would solve all our problems

Christmas will be going ahead as usual in my household here. We never have people over on the day but I’ll still be seeing people beforehand. I’ve lost enough time and I’m not letting it ruin another thing. No chance.

Whyhello · 13/06/2021 17:01

I don’t think many people will comply if she try to restrict people for a second Christmas running. I personally picture a huge rebellion if they even try to enforce a third lockdown. People aren’t scared of covid anymore, they’ve realised it has a very small chance of killing them because they’re young and/or healthy and probably been vaccinated now too. Nobody wants to hide away anymore, we all just want to live our lives.

newnortherner111 · 13/06/2021 17:02

I think if you plan to travel abroad or have someone visit you from abroad, assume it won't happen or be extremely difficult.

The one person whose Christmas should be restricted and be from a prison cell is Mr Johnson, but that won't happen sadly.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/06/2021 17:02

@MagicSummer most people who are double vaccinated are the ones most vulnerable to Covid, unfortunately no vaccine is 100% effective so some people will still die. Not many healthy people under 50 are double vaxxed yet. Not dismissing the deaths but the sad truth is some people will always be more vulnerable to Covid than others.

Died 'with Covid' not 'of Covid'

Shouldn't have given India 3 weeks notice of turning red here. That's where the problem lies. Firmly at our government

BlossomOnTrees · 13/06/2021 17:02

Pretty sure things will be back to normal by Christmas to be honest

fashionablefennel · 13/06/2021 17:03

let's be honest, we ended up in lockdown last January BECAUSE no one gave a crap about the restrictions last year. Again, no one would respect anything this year.

It's going away that might be a bit tricky unfortunately. I think there will be a lot of last minute bookings nearer the time. People need holidays and not being on house arrest for the sake of their mental health.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 13/06/2021 17:03

Everyone I know 40+ is double vaccinated or has chosen not to have it.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 13/06/2021 17:03

Bold fail in my post. The first para wasn't mine

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/06/2021 17:07

@NeverForgetYourDreams would be useful if we knew the ages of the double vaxxed who have died.

Nocutenamesleft · 13/06/2021 17:07

I’m truly hoping there isn’t

But if there is. We will comply. I have w multitude of rare illnesses which leave me very vulnerable. So we wouldn’t have a large gathering at our house or anyone else’s. Sadly.

SunshineCake · 13/06/2021 17:07

@Overthebow

I think Christmas will be normal as no one would comply. I certainly wouldn’t.
This is why this is still going on, because people think they won't make a difference if they just carry on as they want.
