AIBU?

Boris Johnson in the sea

Did anyone else find the coverage of this mildly annoying. I found it to be so for three reasons -

  1. the BBC commentator made a joke about “oh is that Angela Merkel a bit further out?” Boris is the size he is, but if it were a woman of a similar size the papers would have a field day (or just any female politician of any size tbh).

  2. He has then set it up so that he is filmed walking down the beach with his shirt off. Carrie, of course, can’t be pictured in a swimsuit because of the way the press / society is, so she’s walking alongside in a long dress (even though she’s 20 years younger and the rest of it).

  3. I can’t stand him anyway.

@rosy71

Carrie is a fashion breath of fresh air, I'm so bored of kates rigid "look"

Carrie's clothes look exactly like Kate's to me. Confused

They’re nothing like Kate’s. Not that there would be anything wrong with them if they were.

I have a house in the area. Most people only venture into the sea wearing a wet suit. Brave man as he probably would have liked to turn and run as soon as the water hit his nether region. Sadly he was committed. Also given the temperature of the water at present that was pretty impressive arm action. Some people without a wet suit literally freeze and can only take small strokes and big breaths until they get acclimatised .

There are pictures of Boden attending church but they're obviously not deemed as interesting as other photo ops by the newspaper editors.

This is a total aside, but leading on from the post about Carrie taking Johnson's name, I can't help but think of Johnson's ex and their adult DC. It must be hard seeing all of these photos splashed all over the papers. She is a stalwart woman but having been supportive and put up with so much shite over the years, it would have been some reward to be able to meet a few presidents. But there again, perhaps she feels better off out of it?

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

I can imagine lots of people* fancying a bit of Vitamin Sea off a beach like that - I certainly would! - but never mind, any excuse for a good old Boris-bash.

*except of course the multitude of MNers who’d never fancy any such thing, because it wouldn’t be anywhere near hygienic enough - fish would have pooed in it, eeeww!!

According to Surfers against Sewage it’s not the fish poo you need to worry about!

This thread starts out claiming that men don't get body shammed and then poster after poster body shames a man.

No wonder feminism is losing.

We should not be shaming Mr Johnson's body, we should be condemning a serial liar of a man whose actions and inactions have probably cost over 10,000 lives, when compared with alternative Tory leaders who could have been chosen, or even Jeremy Corbyn.

I can't think of any reason why he can't go for a swim, he's allowed down time! I hope he enjoyed it.

I have no idea why you are commenting on either of their bodies.

Um, I didn't really want to see Boris in the sea, but I don't think the press would dare say anything negative about a woman's body these days.

I wish Trudeau would get shirtless though. Any pics of that?

No comment on Boris but goddamn yes please to a bit of shirtless Trudeau!

He went for a swim in the sea. So what?
It's nothing to do with his policies or his personality so why would anyone care?
If it's a PR stunt that's hardly newsworthy either. All politicians, celebrities and RF do that.

The only reason politicians appear to 'make a great show of going to church' is because photographers follow them there to take pictures of, stop press, people walking out of a church.

I'm guessing Carrie may possibly be on MN. I'm sure she's a tough cookie and well used to people dissing Boris. However, politics aside, I hope if she were to come onto MN anonymously that she wouldn't feel unwelcome.

Soapbox. That's not the case as far as the Bidens. They never miss church on Sunday wherever they are. He is a devout Catholic

I think that May was also sincere in her beliefs - as probably was Gordon Brown.

I mention the Johnsons because they have just made rather a show of having a Catholic wedding. The least they could do is attend Mass for a few weeks at least.

I don’t think they did make a show. They did it very quietly and largely under the radar. However they don’t seem to be Churchgoers . I suppose it’s like marrying as a Protestant. Very few are regular churchgoers.

Yes Rousette. I don't seem to have explained it well, but I meant that people mistake sincere believers for the photo-opportunistic type. TurquoiseLemur claimed Theresa May made 'a great show of going to church' but she would have attended anyway, photographers or not.

In your opinion, but posting myself as one who is a regular Church goer.
It's nonsense to say they didn't make a show of their wedding, that is exactly what they did plus make a big hoo ha about how his other weddings weren't really valid. But that is the measure of Johnson.

But I would be in the sea any chance i got so don’t blame him.

Agree with what you said about female politicians not being able to get away with the same.

I thought the public didn't know about the marriage until afterwards. If so they hardly made a big thing of it.
Perhaps they did announce it though and I missed it . I don't pay that much attention to what Boris does.

I never said that they didn't make a show of their wedding beforehand - indeed, they had sent out 'save the date' invitations, but afterwards - I don't know how many column inches were written about how his Catholic wedding was allowed.

I didn't mention Theresa May. I mentioned Margaret Thatcher.

Am not a great fan of May but I agree she would have attended anyway, she is a committed Christian.

I thought they made the exact opposite of a show managing to keep it secret so that absolutely no press were there. Whatever we think of Johnson that was quite a coup.

Did they? It’s been endlessly discussed but that was because it was a surprise to people. Largely because it didn’t fit with our assumptions about the Catholic Church. Presumably they asked at Westminster Cathedral and it was allowed.
