AIBU?

Boris Johnson in the sea

Did anyone else find the coverage of this mildly annoying. I found it to be so for three reasons -

  1. the BBC commentator made a joke about “oh is that Angela Merkel a bit further out?” Boris is the size he is, but if it were a woman of a similar size the papers would have a field day (or just any female politician of any size tbh).

  2. He has then set it up so that he is filmed walking down the beach with his shirt off. Carrie, of course, can’t be pictured in a swimsuit because of the way the press / society is, so she’s walking alongside in a long dress (even though she’s 20 years younger and the rest of it).

  3. I can’t stand him anyway.

I'm not a Boris fan but criticise his policy, inaction, dodgy dealings etc . I don't think his appearance is relevant.

the appearance of the man is not the issue. It is his lying, cheating and the terrible things he is doing to the country.

Carrie Symonds is just as bad - you are known by the company you keep. Don't care what she looks like either.

[quote Orf1abc]Not a pretty sight, and I agree, a female of that size would be ridiculed for a similar display. I'm surprised he didn't have Union Jack shorts though, get his fan base gurning a bit more.

And yet you think it's OK to say "Not a pretty sight" Hmm

I am not surprised that Boris would go into the sea, as he usually gets a bit involved with various activities when he goes out and about, such as playing table tennis badly, going on a zip wire, and rowing in a little boat etc,
I have not seen him in the sea as yet, did he wear one of those rubber swimming caps, to keep his hair from dripping all over the place.?

It’s the wider hypocrisy of the whole thing that irks me. Just imagining the papers if Angela Merkel had done the same thing?

Also, Carrie knows full well she can’t go in the sea because the press would be there with long lenses. In the Fail it would be, “Carrie, aged 34, showed off her post baby body in a size 10 swimsuit from blah blah, price etc etc.”

@OhWhyNot

Boris is always prompting himself

Agree if a women we would have mentions of her swimsuit and underhand remarks about her body oh she wasn’t shy to go in the see ie. she should be hiding her body or she swam gracefully and was no bothered by the temperature ie. she looked good and has a body to show off

I remember Boris attending a mosque while he was mayor of London and opps silly man he was wearing unmatching socks and hadn’t noticed until it was pointed out to him haha Hmm

Everything is contrived and always has been he is a master at it that’s why he is PM

Actually she would be "flaunting her curves". Grin

When you say he’s always prompting himself, do you mean ‘promoting?’

I’m curious what you think the papers would say if Angela Merkel had taken a swim. What are you imagining exactly?

I agree with you that there is a massive double standard where male and female politicians are concerned.

Boris can jump in the sea and will be praised for doing so with an air of nonchalance and being "too important to care" . Imagine if Theresa May or Angela Merkel had done the same thing. You can imagine the comments.

[quote RubyViolet]He’s an embarrassment, sacked as a journalist twice for lying. Now he’s in the position of his dreams , he can lie with impunity.
The New York Times just described him as..” a terrible leader..clownish…venal…incompetent…slapdash…a greased piglet…involved in dodgy dealings, sleaze and chumocracy.”

Surely they are describing Trump?

What annoys me with him is how he evades any awkward question with, “Well, er, I think what the British people want....”

How many people on this country are unable to give a definitive answer as to have many children they have?

Imagine any female politician with an unknown amount of children. They would be torn to shreds and declared unfit for public office!

How many children does BJ have now? Is it 6 or 7? Not an unreasonable question.

@happinessischocolate

He deserved a nice swim. It's June, he's worked his socks off for the last couple of years, had a baby, been ill, got married etc.

That's hilarious 😂😂😂😂

Absolutely.

Well if I was there I would have jumped in that beautiful sea, even being female, whether I was a head of state, head of state's spouse, or the tea maker, and whatever weight I was. Then if any paps papped me I'd tell them swimming is healthy and great exercise and not give a shit what they said about my body in the papers. I really don't agree that women "can't" do this - they can and they should.

I'm not a fan of Boris in the least but I can't see anything wrong with this. The coverage is a bit annoying but getting a swim in is a good thing.

We should be trying to stop hateful comments about women’s bodies, not making them about men as well 🙄

Of all the things to complain about BoJo, him taking a swim isn’t one of them.

Man went swimming in the sea, in Cornwall, during a heatwave.
The horror.

Obviously a PR stunt, but most politicians take part in PR stunts, so I can’t really get too worked up about it either way.

Report

And to be fair to the bloke, he is overweight, and even though he's not a woman, there will be endless comments on his body, many of them sneery and horrible - there are even some on this thread. It's hardly a Putin-esque muscle-rippling show of strength and he will have to endure having his body commented on too.

The only way to triumph over that is not to give a shit and that's what women should do too. Of course I don't know if any of them wanted to, but it's really sad if they would have loved to and didn't because of what the press might have to say.
