Boris Johnson in the sea

Did anyone else find the coverage of this mildly annoying. I found it to be so for three reasons -

  1. the BBC commentator made a joke about “oh is that Angela Merkel a bit further out?” Boris is the size he is, but if it were a woman of a similar size the papers would have a field day (or just any female politician of any size tbh).

  2. He has then set it up so that he is filmed walking down the beach with his shirt off. Carrie, of course, can’t be pictured in a swimsuit because of the way the press / society is, so she’s walking alongside in a long dress (even though she’s 20 years younger and the rest of it).

  3. I can’t stand him anyway.

His policies are of course hot air and lip service as expected but kudos to Cornish staycation and second holiday cottage free advertising. Literally putting this beautiful corner of our overcrowded little island on the global stage with the big boys and girls! Cornwall Côte d'Azur Amalfi Coast Martha’s Vineyard is the new London Paris Rome New York!

Crankley · 13/06/2021 16:03

Man takes swim in ocean. Left wingers need to Boris bash so I expect nothing less on here. Seems pathetic to me.

Sparklingbrook · 13/06/2021 16:06

I think if it was truly staged the footage would be less grainy TBH.

The PM taking a swim in the sea is not really news or anything to worry about IMO.

BreakingtheIce · 13/06/2021 16:06

I'm not sure what you're objecting to. Whatever size someone is, they should be able to swim in the sea without comment. He is obviously doing it as a PR stunt. i don't see why you're annoyed.

nancy75 · 13/06/2021 16:08

@UCOinSteveArnottsPants

Baywatch Boris Grin
Baywatch? More like crimewatch
Malteser71 · 13/06/2021 16:13

Maybe Carrie doesn’t want to get in.

I own a property right there abd I can tell you that the sea is currently very very cold.

Nicolastuffedone · 13/06/2021 16:13

So, he’s wrong for swimming now? Right….

Staffy1 · 13/06/2021 16:14

I just felt jealous when I saw him in the sea.

Dennisreynoldsduster · 13/06/2021 16:25

Poldark it ain't

FatCatThinCat · 13/06/2021 16:25

My first thought was 'Where's a great white when you need one?'.

MsTSwift · 13/06/2021 16:26

Super jealous would love to have gone to beach today and had a swim but we have in laws here

TillyTopper · 13/06/2021 16:32

I think he likes doing stuff like running, biking and swimming, it was early morning - why shouldn't he go for a dip? So what if he takes his top off and walks down the beach? I think the fact he obviously does not give a shit about how he looks is a good thing! It's not like he left the meeting and went to the beach is it. Perhaps Carrie didn't want to due to the press being there - her choice.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 13/06/2021 16:33

Perhaps Carrie can’t swim?

UpTheJunktion · 13/06/2021 16:33

Has Carrie changed her name to ‘Mrs Johnson’ ?

murbblurb · 13/06/2021 16:38

Too many fooled by appearances. Rishi Sunak is slim and conventionally good looking. I assure you he is still giving this country a royal seeing to and his policies seem suspiciously beneficial to his wife's business.

JinglingHellsBells · 13/06/2021 16:44

I don't really see the point of this post @sambaa

The Mail has photos of him running every single day in shorts and a T.
Today he's swimming, minus the T shirt.

He's keeping fit and is trying to lose weight as he knows it almost killed him when he had Covid.

Ok maybe it's also a photo op, but does anyone really care one way or the other?

ChicChaos · 13/06/2021 16:44

It came across as a very cringe-worthy PR stunt to me.

AdaColeman · 13/06/2021 16:45

He was lucky that no passing fishermen harpooned him!

JinglingHellsBells · 13/06/2021 16:49

@PPCD

It felt very staged.
I hope it was as an example of how everyone should take exercise and get fitter- which is what he's been doing since he almost died (and admitted his weight was a factor.)
Frazzled2207 · 13/06/2021 16:49

Cannot stand Boris but I think it’s generally a good thing that he makes a point of being photographed running/swimming etc and has clearly lost weight which is generally a good thing. If he doing so persuades one other person to do the same then that’s a good thing.

MingeofDeath · 13/06/2021 16:51

To give him credit, he did it properly and just went for it. The sea is bloomin' cold around our shores.

TurquoiseLemur · 13/06/2021 16:54

@actiongirl1978

He deserved a nice swim. It's June, he's worked his socks off for the last couple of years, had a baby, been ill, got married etc.

When we go to Cornwall for a couple of nights I like to have a swim. It relaxes me and clears my head.

Why on earth would you have a problem with it?

Worked his socks off? This is the man who was on holiday when the World Health Organization declared a pandemic. He had left instructions that he wasn't to be bothered. And even when he heard that there was a pandemic, he didn't break off his holiday.

In the following few months, during the first lockdown, he missed FIVE emergency Cobra meetings.

This is the Prime Minister, not a junior civil servant.

Having a baby? No, his partner had the baby. And they have a nanny or two. Getting married when you have a tiny number of guests is hardly strenuous either.

He's not doing this to clear his head. He is doing it for the PR. You are being manipulated.

Stoic123 · 13/06/2021 16:55

Hate his politics/role in Brexit. Anyone in public eye trying to stay fit (particularly if struggled in past), fine by me (PR or not).

That swim - probably first time I've ever envied him.

awaynboilyurheid · 13/06/2021 16:56

@FatCatThinCat

My first thought was 'Where's a great white when you need one?'.
This wins it!
luckylavender · 13/06/2021 16:56

actiongirl1978 - you're joking of course. Johnson wouldn't know the meaning of working his socks off.
