To want a black and rose gold pram for our baby boy

I'm 6 months pregnant and we've decided on getting the Egg2 travel system for our baby boy. I've fallen in love with the black diamond and rose gold edition:

www.johnlewis.com/egg2-special-edition-stroller-luxury-travel-system-bundle-diamond-black/p5399692

I know it's on the girlier side but I think it's absolutely stunning and don't see what the big deal is about not getting such a pram for a baby boy. It's not like I've chosen a pink pram! Dh is completely against it but I know ultimately he'll succumb to my charms 😅 He is worried about what everyone else will think and say though. Family that I have shown think it's mad to get this pram for a boy due to the rose gold and glittery fabric. Is it really that mad??

My 2nd choice and Dh's 1st choice of colour is the Jurassic grey:

I know rose gold is not to everyone's taste but I personally love it and the pram make me swoon! It's on the pricier side so I don't want us to make the wrong decision.

Bloody hell! We spent £250 on our second hand Bugaboo and I thought that was extortionate!!
Colour is irrelevant unless your the kind of person who put those bow headbands on their baldy baby girls and 'lock your daughters up' tshirts on baby boys...

BungleandGeorge · 09/06/2021 12:15

Have you seen the pram on real life?
How often will he be pushing it? If 95% you then not unreasonable to get the one you like, if nearer 50:50 you probably need to compromise.

clary · 09/06/2021 12:16

OP I don't think it matters what colour your pram is, nor do I think that is a particularly girly pram (if indeed such a thing exists). It's not to my taste but that's fine.

Just be aware tho, as others have said, you may not end up using it for very long. We had a lie-flat pram that just about fitted in our boot (small car) and we ditched it at about 9 months for a Maclaren umbrella fold - much easier to manoeuvre, fold up and store.

We used the pram for all three DC but none used it longer than about 6-8 months. I have no idea how much prams cost now (ours was £200 but that was 20 years ago) but I agree with others that £1500 seems like a lot of money. If they are all this much then I guess it's fair enough. Of course if you can easily afford it and it fits in well with your lifestyle (fits in car, works for how much you will be walking with baby) then go for it.

FWIW I recall DD once wearing a purple dress and a woman asked what my little boy's name was. It doesn't matter.

sailmeaway · 09/06/2021 12:17

'Really don't get why people are being so hung up about the price!! '

Because it is an absolutely ridiculous amount of money top spend on a pram.

TheKeatingFive · 09/06/2021 12:18

Because it is an absolutely ridiculous amount of money top spend on a pram.

Depends on your disposable income whether it is or not.

shouldistop · 09/06/2021 12:19

This is the fabric of my pram which is a bit flowery. I've had 2 boys in it now and their willies have yet to fall off. Your dh is being silly.

I could never justify that sort of money on a pram, even if I expected it would be re-used for a second child.

@sailmeaway I agree with your thoughts.

PegPeople · 09/06/2021 12:20

My £1000 pram has held a lot of its value, had it almost 4 years now. Easy to clean if needs be

Thats great but the reason people are cautioning the OP over this pram is because it won't hold its value because the framework will look scratched within weeks. If she's fine with that then that's great and it's ultimately up to only her and her partner but sometimes first time parents can overlook stuff like that.

5zeds · 09/06/2021 12:22

I have a large family and so have seen many a pram/car seat etc. The important factors are, after the obvious safety concerns, can you lift it and how does it fold up and where it’s stored. Buy the colour you like, style you like, etc etc. That wouldn’t be my choice at all but I live in a large house in the middle of nowhere and so wheels are more of a focus. If you want to push it one handed through shopping malls that looks fine.

BungleandGeorge · 09/06/2021 12:24

If it became very scuffed And looked terrible id take it back at that price. I can’t say I ever noticed my pram looking scuffed but admittedly it wasn’t a shiny special addition!
Op you mention having another soon. The tandem seat isn’t available in black/rose so may spoil the effect you want if you put another colour on??

Peach01 · 09/06/2021 12:25

It isn't a ridiculous amount. That outlook of "you should spend less" could be applied to everything and everyone in life. It's a non issue here. This isn't about the cost as she can afford it. Everyone's financial situation is different.
If OP said "AIBU to think we can live off beans and toast and struggle to pay our mortgage because I really want a £1500 on a pram" that would be ridiculous.

BungleandGeorge · 09/06/2021 12:25

I quite like the all black special edition..

shouldistop · 09/06/2021 12:26

I suspect others are right about it looking scratched quickly. Personally I wouldn't spend that much either.

Lorw · 09/06/2021 12:29

Just a warning OP that the rose gold doesn’t stay looking that nice, friend of mine has one and hers looked absolutely battered after a few weeks use, scratched and became ‘dull’ looking. Of course I suppose how careful you are with it.

TheKeatingFive · 09/06/2021 12:30

MN is weird about prams. It comes up every time. For some reason splashing on a pram is frowned upon. Though given the number of 4x4 lovers on here, spending astronomically on a car is absolutely fine.

Anonymouslyposting · 09/06/2021 12:31

Haven’t read the full thread so apologies if someone has already said this.

I’ve got the cybex mios in rose gold. Admittedly it is for my DD but I’d say it’s not particularly girly and I’d use it again if I had a DS in future. DH is perfectly comfortable pushing it. It comes with lots of different seat colours so you could “boy it up” by going for a blue seat or similar. It’s also got less rose gold than the egg so could be a compromise.

Just to note, I live in a city and so am only really dealing with pavements - I definitely wouldn’t pick the mios if I was dealing with uneven ground a lot. Small, light, manoeuvrable so perfect for us but not a country pram. Matches with maxi coding car seats. Cybex do a larger one called the Priam which may be better off road but I haven’t tried it so can’t comment.

Cutesbabasmummy · 09/06/2021 12:31

Op spend whatever you like on a pram! We used ours for a year. We knew we were having a boy and chose bright purple. No one ever asked if baby was a boy or a girl. Everyone important to us already knew he was a boy .

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 09/06/2021 12:37

I’ve bought cars cheaper than that

cherryboos · 09/06/2021 12:38

Good for you Hmm

SunshineCake · 09/06/2021 12:39

@MelancholyMother

Personally I prefer the grey but that's just my preference!

Baby boy won't mind what pram he's in but I agree with others that there will be some who assume he's a girl because of the pram. However, I have a toddler who has curly longish hair and he is always assumed to be a girl no matter what. This is despite him wearing what is obviously 'boy clothes' so no matter what people will assume what they like!

Do what you think is best, it doesn't matter what others think Smile

Maybe they are trying to not gender stereotype re the clothes.
whyayepetal · 09/06/2021 12:40

If it’s going to be your one big purchase OP, make sure it’s one you both agree on. Things we checked (more than 20 years ago Grin) when buying ours:

  1. Does the car seat that is part of the set fit both our cars properly?
  2. Are the handles high enough (we are both tall)
  3. Can baby lie flat in the pram?
  4. When folded, will it fit in the boot of the smallest car (it did - I had a micra at the time and it just fitted)

Then obviously colour and style etcetera after we had positives for those four. We ended up with a navy/white Graco model that saw us through both DDs. Don’t think the Egg ones were even invented back then, but there were definitely “in” brands. Ours wasn’t one of those, but it was very user friendly, practical, and did the job so we were happy. Good luck choosing Smile

mistermagpie · 09/06/2021 12:47

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar

John Lewis also have Uppababy Vista 2 which generally comes out very well in comparisons with other systems of the same type (I can't find a review that compares it directly with the Egg 2 though). The Uppababy comes in some really gorgeous fabric colours and the chassis it shiny-ish.
I have an uppababy vista for my 'big pram'. I think it was £700 ish about six years ago and it's done all three of my children. The youngest is now in a stroller mostly (she's 19 months) but we still get the uppababy out for long days out because it's got such great storage and we can fit a buggy board on for my middle child.

It's a fab pram. I got the grey one and it looks great even years later.

Whyhello · 09/06/2021 12:50

It’s just a colour so rather irrelevant but do prepare yourself for people assuming your baby is a girl. People automatically think of a girl when they see any tone of pink or purple and also, I have found, certain patterns. I used to like leopard print when my eldest was a baby 11 years ago so dressed him in the odd leopard print T-shirt or babygrow, he was often called a girl.

mam0918 · 09/06/2021 12:54

I dont see how its girly, my pram is black and gold and no one has ever mistaken my boys for girls.

I do get stopped praised by old women for how beautiful the pram is though and lots of comment from other mam about how they wanted one like mine but couldnt afford it (its an unknown brand and was brand new off ebay shop with all the extras like carry cot and car seat for about £200, it must just look more expensive than it is).

Jaxhog · 09/06/2021 12:56

Tell your DH that you'll put a blue blanket/duvet etc. in it if it bothers him that much!

I don't think it looks girly at all.
